This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an assembly of divices to be worn for protecting the person and property of the wearer.

A principal object of the invention is to provide a device for securing an article of wearing apparel such as a handbag to the person of the wearer in order to prevent theft of the handbang or the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combined utility and emergency case for use as an ordinary conventional coin or token holder, as a billfold, as a key case and as a holder for pocket emergency articles such as a whistle, electric flash light and the like.

A further object according to a modification of the invention is to provide a bill fold with a clamping device to protect the contents.

For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:

FIGURE 1 is a front perspective view of a transparent lady’s handbag with an attaching device embodying one form of the invention shown attached to the handbag and to a finger of the user, a mounting card for the attaching device and a combined coin holder, billfold, and pocket article support being seen in the handbag.

FIG. 2 is a front perspective view of the combined utility and emergency case shown in the handbag in FIG. 1.

FIG. 3 is a rear perspective view thereof.

FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 of a combined utility and emergency case embodying a modified form of the invention.

FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a combined utility and emergency case embodying a modified form of the invention, the key case being shown in open position and keys being shown supported therein, one of the keys being shown in extended position.

FIG. 6 is a front perspective view of a billfold embodying still another modified form of the invention, the clamping clip being shown in inoperative position in full lines and in operative position in dash lines.

FIG. 7 is a similar view showing the clamping clip in operative position in full lines, parts being shown broken away.

FIG. 8 is a perspective view of a chain-supported assembly of pocket articles such as a billfold, a whistle, a key and a clip embodying still another modified form of the invention shown applied to the belt of the wearer, the billfold being shown positioned in the pocket of the trousers of the wearer.

Referring now in detail to the various views of the drawings, in FIG. 1 a ring and chain assembly 10 embodying one form of the invention is shown. The assembly 10 comprises a plastic or metal ring 12 to which is fastened by welding or the like one end of a flexible chain or string 14. The other end of the chain or string 14 is provided with means of any suitable kind for securing the chain or string to an article of wearing apparel, such as a handbag 18 shown in FIG. 1.

The handbag 18 shown is of conventional construction comprising a flexible leather body with bottom wall 20, front wall 22, rear wall 24 and end walls 26, 26. The open top includes a hinged sectional frame 28 including inverted U-shaped subframes 30, 30 hinged at the adjacent ends thereof as indicated at 32. At the center of the bight portions of the subframes there are spherical lugs 34, 34 in interlocking relation. A flexible strap 36 is connected at its ends to rings 38 on one of the subframes 30. The chain or string 14 is shown fastened to the strap 36. The body of the handbag 18 is formed of transparent plastic material to expose the contents thereof which consists in the present instance in a mounting card 39 for mounting a supply of the ring and chain assemblies 10. A combined utility and emergency case 40 embodying a modified form of the invention best shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 is also shown in the handbag. The combined utility and emergency case 40 comprises a thin plate-like body 42 of rigid plastic material with a rearwardly extending top flange 44 and end flanges 46, 46 and vertical partition flanges 48 and 50, at the top, dividing the rear of the plate body 42 into compartments 52, 54, 56, respectively, at the top of the plate-like body 42. A slot 58 formed in the top flange leads to the compartment 52 and is sufficiently large to receive a token. Another slot 60 in the top flange leads to the compartment 54 and is sufficiently large to receive a large size coin such as a quarter; and a third slot 62 in the top flange leads to the compartment 56 and is sufficiently large to receive a small coin such as a dime. Round openings 64, 66, 68 are formed in the front plate in line with the compartments 52, 54, 56, respectively, serving as windows.

At the horizontal center of the plate-like body 42, the face thereof is enlarged and formed with a transverse groove 70 and another transverse groove 72 below groove 70. The thin plastic panel 74 covers the flat top face portion of the plate-like body 42 and the top and side flanges thereof. The panel bulges outwardly opposite the groove 70 and bulges outwardly opposite the groove 72, the bulged portions of the panel and the plate-like body defining elongated pockets 76 and 78, respectively, for supporting a whistle 80 and an electric flashlight 82. The whistle is shown provided with a string 84.

A flexible leather coin purse 88 is secured flatwise to the rear of the plate-like body 42 by adhesive or in any suitable manner and serves as a closure for compartments 52, 54 and 58. The purse 88 comprises a body similar in shape to the plate-like body 42 having an inner wall 90, outer wall 92, bottom wall 94 and end walls 96, 96. The top is open but is adapted to be closed by a flexible flap 98 formed integrally with the top edge of the inner wall 90. A fastening element 100 is provided at the bottom center of the flap for coacting with a complemental fastening element (not shown) on the outer wall 92, for holding the flap in closed position. The purse 88 may contain any desired pocket articles such as coins, lipstick and the like.

The combined utility and emergency case 40 may be carried in the pockets of the clothing of the wearer or in larger purses or other small containers and provides ready means for whistling for protection in an emergency such as whistling for a policeman when in a public highway, and provides ready means for locating keyholes in the dark.

FIG. 4 shows a modified form of combined utility and emergency case 40' which differs from the case 40 merely in mounting a key case 101 on the flap 98' of the purse 88'. The flap is recessed to receive the keys and the recess is covered by the flap 103 which is provided with a hand knob 105 for manipulating the same. In all other respects, the case 40' is similar to case 40 and

3,286,751 similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.

The combined utility and emergency case 40 shown in FIG. 5 differs from the case 40 of FIGS. 2 and 3 in that in place of the coin purse 88 there is provided a key case 102. The key case 102 comprises a rectangular box-like structure 104 having a flat plate-like body 106 with walls 108, 108 extending outwardly of the sides thereof thereby forming a channel-shaped body. A bar 109 extends across the space between the side walls at the outer end thereof, the ends being secured to the side walls. The bar swingably supports keys 110. The keys are adapted to be swung outwardly to operative position as shown to the left of the FIG. 5 and are adapted to be swung inside of the channel shaped body, for storage purpose.

A rectangular-shaped box-like card case 112 is hingedly connected at one end to the inner end of the channelshaped body and is adapted to close said channel-shaped body. The card case 112 is slotted as indicated at 114 to receive a card 116 for identification purposes, the card 116 being visible through a window 118.

In FIGS. 6 and 7, a billfold 120 embodying yet another modified form of the invention is illustrated. The billfold 120 comprises a rectangular body of flexible material such as leather having a pair of elongated panels 122 and 124 attached along their bottom edges by a row of stitching 126 and along the end edges thereof by rows of stitching 128, 128. The upper edges of the panels are unattached providing entrance 130 to insert foldable bills and the like. In accordance with this form of the invention, an elongated metal clip 132 is pivotally secured to the top edge of panel 124 midway its ends by means of a perforated bracket 126 fastened in position by rivets 128. The clip is constituted by an elongated strap of springy metal folded upon itself forming opposed legs 130 and a bight portion 132. The free ends of the legs are curved outwardly as indicated at 134. The clip is swingable in the bracket and is adapted to be swung over the outside of the body of the billfold midway its ends as seen in FIG. 8 in order to clamp the contents of the billfold against accidentally falling out of the billfold.

Referring now to the modification of the invention shown in FIG. 8, herein an assembly of pocket articles is shown attached to the crosspiece 138 of the waistband of the trousers 139 of the wearer, between the crosspiece and the belt 140. The assembly is constituted by an elongated chain 142, on one end of which is secured a billfold 144 similar to the billfold 120 shown in FIG. 6. The billfold is secured to the end of the chain by means of an elongated flat metal loop 146 which encircles the body of the billfold midway its ends. An openable ring 148 is secured to the other end of the chain and removably secured to the ring there are a whistle 150, key 152 and a metal clip 154 whereby the ring is detachably secured to the crosspiece 138 of the trousers waistband. When the clip 154 is positioned as shown in FIG. 8, the whistle and key hang from the crosspiece, and the billfold can readily be positioned in the side pocket 156 of the trousers 139 as shown.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
