To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Harrison Main, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka Springs, in the county of Carroll and State of 5 Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Movement-Cure Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

io My invention relates to movement cure apparatus for invalids; and it has for its object to provide a cot which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, and one whereby a patient may be exercised while lying upon 15 the same.

With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an invalid-cot constructed in accordance with my invention, showing an arrangement whereby hot air or steam may be applied to the patient. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the cot, showing the leaves of the same raised; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section showing the leaves lowered.

In the accompanying drawings, in which to like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the frame of the cot, which consists of the parallel side pieces or strips, a, connected at their ends by cross-pieces b.

Upon the inner sides of the side pieces,’a, are arranged strips c, the ends of which are cut off or beveled for a purpose which will be more fully explained.

Midway between the ends of the frame is 40 provided a cross strip or section of the mattress of the cot. The said section rests upon the strips c and is supported thereby, and is secured in any suitable manner against movement. The said section of the mattress or bot45 tom of the bed consists of a board covered with a section, d, of a mattress, which is also held against displacement.

B B represent pivoted leaves or mattresssections, which are pivoted near their_outer ends between the sides of the frame. It will thus be seen that said leaves may be raised untiltheir under outer ends strike the beveled ends of the strips c, which will serve as stops. The inner ends of the pivoted leaves are provided with hinged strips e, the hinges 5; being located on both the upper and lower sides of the same, so that the strips can only be moved a slight distance, either upwardly or downwardly, the hinges on the upper side of the pivoted leaves and strips e being flexi- 60 ble, so as to allow the strips e to assume a horizontal position when the pivoted leaves are raised. The said pivoted leaves B B are also covered with mattresses, which are held thereon against displacement. Stops or pins 65 D extend th rough the sides of the frame to hold.the inner ends of the pivoted leaves or sections in a raised position, said pins being removable, so that the leaves or sections may be lowered when desired. 70

The cot above described is supported upon any suitable or well-known arrangement of rockers, as shown at a'.

The above-described cot is well adapted for the application of heat to the patient, or for 7 5 applying a steam-pad. In the last-mentioned case a stove is placed under the cot, and a flexible pipe having a pad at one end connected with a vessel on the stove containing hot water, said pipe being adapted to convey So the steam to the pad, which may be placed at any desired point on the patient’s body.

The normal position of the pivoted leaves is that shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to exercise a patient the patient is 85 placed upon the cot and the pivoted leaves raised, as shown in Fig. 2, and held in such position by means of the stop-pins D. As the strips e are hinged, the weight of the patient will cause the same to assume a horizon- 90 tai position, said strips forming a rest for the breast and groins of the patient, the feet resting upon one of the inclined pivoted leaves and the arms upon the other. The cot is then rocked, thus giving the patient exercise 95 while in a passive position and without any exertion on the part of the patient. After the patient has been exercised sufficiently the pins D are removed and the leaves lowered to the position shown in Fig. 1. ico
