SCRUBBING-BRUSH.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,224, dated April 30, 1861.

To dll whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, William L. Haller, of the city ancl county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Scrubbing-Brush; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification and being a perspective view of my improved brush in an inverted position.

The subject of my invention is a brush composed of a number of strips of india rubber or analogous material clamped in dove tail grooves between strips of wood constituting the back of the brush, as hereinafter explained.

A, A, A, represent strips of india rubber or analogous material, of common square form clamped in dovetail grooves between strips of blocks B, B, B, B, of wood or metal suitably jointed together and constituting the back and main body of the brush.

C, C, are screw bolts, and D, D, nuts by which the blocks B, are compressed together after the insertion of the gum strips. The latter project beyond the face of the wood as shown in the drawings and present a rubbing surface of great effectiveness for cleansing floors, pavements, or paint, or for any 30 other purpose for which a scrubbing brush is commonly employed.

The gum surface is less costly, more effective and durable than bristles and when worn down can be readily renewed. 35

The number of gum strips and the form of the brush may be varied to suit the requirements of various kinds of work.
