This invention relates to a label which provides a pocket for containing an enclosure, such as an invoice, statement, and the like, pertaining to a mailing piece on which such label is attached.

A principal object of the invention is to provide a label of this character that may be produced inexpensively with standard envelope making machinery.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a label pocket construction which permits easy insertion of an enclosure prior to application of the label to a mailing piece; to provide a label pocket with upper and lower panels that are interconnected along two adjacent edge portions thereof to form an angular seat or stop to locate the enclosure and leave the opposite edges unconnected for facilitating insertion of the enclosure; to provide the upper panel of the label pocket with projecting portions that overlie edges of the lower panel to close said unconnected sides when the label is pasted onto a mailing piece; and to provide the upper panel with a window opening for exposing a mailing address on the enclosure.

When label pockets are applied to rather thick and rigid mailing pieces, they are difficult to open for removal of the enclosure because it is difficult to lift an opening flap or to get a letter opener or the like into the pocket without damaging the enclosure. Therefore, further objects of the invention are to cover the window opening by a patch having a portion capable of being seen through fixed to the inner face of the upper panel, and which has a loose gripping portion to facilitate grasping thereof for making an opening in the pocket as the side edges of the patch guide the lines of tear; and to provide the lower panel with an extension that underlies the gripping portion of the window patch to prevent sticking thereof to the mailing piece when paste or other adhesive is applied for securing the label to the mailing piece.

In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, we have provided improved structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the face side of a label pocket constructed in accordance with one form of the present invention, and showing attachment thereof to a mailing piece.

FIG. 2 is a similar view showing the manner in which the gripping portion of the window patch is pulled upwardly and backwardly longitudinally over the window opening, so that the side edges of the patch guide the lines of tear, thereby opening up a relatively wide opening across the face of the label to permit removal of the enclosure.

FIG. 3 is a plan view of the inner face of a blank from which the label pocket is folded, and showing the window patch applied thereto.

FIG. 4 is a plan view of the label pocket showing the back face thereof which is to be attached to a mailing piece by paste or other adhesive.

FIG. 5 is an enlarged perspective section of the label pocket, taken transversely through the window opening.

FIG. 6 is a similar section through the label pocket, but in a direction longitudinally through the window opening.

FIG. 7 is a plan view of the inside face of a blank for providing another form of the invention.

In carrying out the invention, the window is covei with a patch 23 consisting of a material capable of bei seen through and having greater tensile strength and ] 45 ability than the material of the blank, so that the pal may be used as a pull tab in tearing through the pane to which it is attached. The patch 23 is of greater len; and height than the window opening 16, to provide portion to be sealed over the window opening to the ini 50 face of the panel 4 by an adhesive 24. The adhesive rr extend around the window opening 16, as indicated dotted lines (FIG. 3). In this form of the invention, the seam provided by the adhesive 51 and the fold 38 provides the closed sides of the pocket. Thus the construction is simplified through elimination of the flap 6 of the first described form of the invention. Otherwise, the construction follows that of the first described form of the invention.

The enclosure 58 is placed in the pocket 59 between the front and back panels through the free edges thereof until it seats in the fold 38 and the seam that is effected by the adhesive 51. In this position the enclosure 58, which is outlined in dotted lines, FIG. 8, is completely protected by the panel 40.

In applying the label pocket to a mailing piece 60, the surface 61 of the panel 48 and the portions of the panel 39 that project beyond the edges thereof are coated with a paste or other adhesive. The label pocket is then placed upon the mailing piece 60 and pressed in position, as shown in FIG. 9. Or, like in the first form, the paste may be applied to the face of the mailing piece and the label pocket pressed upon the wet paste.

The enclosure 58 is removed in the manner described in the first form of the invention. The loose tab 49 is gripped between the thumb and forefinger and pulled upwardly through the recess 46 so that the slits 18 and 19 start tears of the front panel 39 and which continue along the side edges of the window patch 48 as the tab 49 is pulled across the window opening.
