To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, John Allen Miles, of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Inhalersand Respirators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to io make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in inhalers and respirators, and more particularly to the construction of mouth-pieces for this class of instruments, to be used with ap15 paratus for administering gas for dental purposes.

Heretofore devices of this character have been constructed with a view to applying the mouth-piece entirely on the outside of the 20 mouth and covering the same, or else providing a stem or tube to be applied between the lips and teeth, and also using a device for covering the mouth in connection therewith. These devices have been found seriously de25 fective, owing to the fact that the passage of air into the lungs is not prevented, and the rapid effect of the gas delayed. A further objection to this method of application consists in the fact that the lips are entirely hid30 den from the view of the operator. This is a great disadvantage, as the color of the lips is a general indication of the condition of the subject.

The object of my invention is to remedy the 35 defects and faults hereinbefore set forth, and to provide a device by means of which the passage of air is precluded and the lips of the subject left in constant view.

A further object is to provide a device of 40 this character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the hereinafter-described mouth-piece or conducting-tube for an inhaler or respirator. ' 4

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my improved mouth-piece, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the same applied between the lips and the gums and teeth.

The mouth-piece may be manufactured from 5 metal, rubber, porcelain, or any other suitable material, and is preferably shaped as shown, thus being adapted to the shape of the mouth.

The mouth-piece A is adapted to be placed 5 within the mouth and to rest against the teeth and gums, while the lips are pressed against the flange or rim B. Thus, when the subject inhales, the lips are drawn tightly against the flange, thus forming an absolutely air-tight 6< mouth-piece. The mouth-piece A is provided with the hole C, for the passage of gas or other preferred narcotic, and with the stem a, for the attachment of a tube, which latter connects it with the gas-holder. 6^;
