To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Emery Andrews, of Kennebunk, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Im5 provement in Trunk-Hinges, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

My invention relates to the construction of trunk-hinges, and has for its object the proio duction of a hinge which presents no sharp projecting corners or edges to catch and tear clothing; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of 15 the drawings, and to the claims to be hereinafter given.

Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevation of a trunk-hinge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of same on line x x on Fig. Ϊ.

Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line y y on Fig. 2, looking toward the joint; and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the leaf B, looking at the ears, to receive the joint-pin.

A and B are the two leaves of the hinge, 25 the former being provided with the single ear a, and the latter with the two ears b b, by means of which and the pin or rivet C the two leaves are pivoted together in the usual manner.

The leaves A and B are made considerably wider than the aggregate width of the three ears a b b, and have all of their outer corners rounded down to their under surface, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, so that there are no sharp 35 corners presented to catch clothing or interfere with the sliding of the trunk upon which the hinge is secured along upon another trunk, or upon a carpeted floor when the trunk happens to lie upon the hinged side.

The thicker portions of the leaves A and B are chambered upon the under side,into which chamber projects the bosses c c,through which - the rivet or screw-holes d d pass, so as to form a solid bearing immediately around the fast45 ening rivet or screw. In the narrower portion of each leaf is formed another rivet or screw hole, /, and intermediate between the holes / and d each leaf is provided with two sharp-pointed spurs, / formed in one piece,or integraljyith.the.leaf, which spurs enter the 50 waIlOf i In· trunk or cover, and serve to register the hinge in the desired.position before the rivets.....or......screws are.....inserted,,and........to take.a portion . of the side strain to which the hinge is subjected, and to. that ex lent relieve the 55 strain upon the fastening rivets or screws.

By making the aggregate width of the ears abb considerably less than the width of those portions of the leaves A and B which are contiguous to said ears I am enabled to have the 60 outer edges of the ears b b perpendicular to the under surfaces of the leaves'without any possibility of clothing getting caught thereon or upon the ends of the pivot-pin C, which are protected by being inclosed between the pro- 65 jecting portions of the leaves A and B, as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be seen that the leaves A and B are made of the same thickness as the ears a and b b for a considerable distance away from the 70 pivotal connection thereof, and then are reduced in thickness, the outline of said reduction being a curved line, as shown in Fig. 1.
