  1. 1
What is claimed is:1. Clamping means for adjustably attaching an articlesupporting boom to a supporting means wherein: (a) said boom and a clamping assembly of said clamping means may be angularly adjusted as a unit with respect to said supporting means, (b) said boom may be adjusted in a direction longitudinal thereof with respect to said clamping assembly while the latter is secured to said supporting means, (c) said clamping assembly and said boom may be removably secured to said supporting means, and (d) all the adjustments aforesaid and the securing of said clamping assembly to said supporting means are locked and controlled by a single manually operable means;said clamping means comprising: (1) a stud member having an end portion formed as a surface of revolution and having a threaded portion, (2) a thumbscrew member having a threaded portion complementary to and arranged to be screwed to said threaded portion of said stud member, said thumbscrew member constituting said single manually operable means, (3) means including said stud member and said thumbscrew member for graspingly engaging a portion of said boom so as to hold it rigid when said thumbscrew member is screwed tight with respect to said stud member, said members and means (1), (2) and (3) collectively constituting said clamping assembly, (4) a substantially U-shaped bracket fixed to said supporting means in which said end portion of said stud member is removably engaged in the operative position of the apparatus, the threaded connection between said stud member and said thumbscrew member serving also, when these members are screwed tight together, to lock said stud member to said bracket by squeezing portions of said bracket between said end portions of said stud member and a part which is held in place between said stud member and said thumbscrew member, and (5) additional means for locating and holding said clamping assembly including said stud member at a predetermined position with respect to said bracket.
  2. 2
Clamping means in accordance with claim 1, in which said boom comprises two substantially paral- lel portions, and in which said means for graspingly engaging a portion of said boom comprises a pair of clamping members forming a part of said clamping assembly and engaging said parallel portions of said boom uniformly and respectively on opposite sides of the threaded connection between said stud member and said thumbscrew member.
  3. 3
Clamping means for attaching a microphone boom to a supporting means, wherein said boom includes a pair of substantially parallel portions which are substantially rigid with each other and are adapted to be simultaneously clamped by said clamping means, and wherein said clamping means is adjustable so as selectively to provide the following arrangements:(1) the boom is locked against all movement with respect to said supporting means, (2) the boom is free for rotation about an axis which is substantially perpendicular thereto, but is otherwise locked against movement, (3) the boom is, in addition to its rotational movement, free for sliding movement with respect to said supporting means in a direction parallel to said parallel portions thereof, and (4) said boom and a portion of said clamping means may be removed as a unit from said supporting means, said clamping means comprising: (a) a stud member having an enlarged end portion formed as a surface of revolution and having a threaded portion;(b) a thumbscrew member having a threaded portion complementary to and arranged to be screwed to said threaded portion of said stud member;(c) a pair of clamping members arranged concentric with the interfitted threaded portions of said stud member and said thumbscrew member at the assembled position of the parts and to engage said substantially parallel portions of said boom, so that when said thumbscrew member is moved to a position in 3,128,352 which it is screwed tight with respect to said stud member, it will squeeze said clamping members close together to lock them to and about portions of said substantially parallel portions of said boom;(d) a substantially U-shaped bracket fixed to said supporting means in which said end portion of said stud member is removably engaged in the operative position of said microphone boom, the threaded connection between said stud member and said thumbscrew member serving also, when these members are screwed tight together, to lock said stud member to said bracket by squeezing portions of said bracket between said end portions of said stud member and a part which is held in place between said stud member and said thumbscrew member;(e) the frictional contact between the parallel portions of said boom and said clamping members being such in area and in view of the composition of said clamping members as to provide a greater resistance to relative movement of said parallel members with respect to said clamping members than the resistance to rotational movement between said U-shaped bracket and said stud member and parts moving therewith, so that a first increment of unscrewing of said thumbscrew member permits relative rotation of said stud member and said boom carried thereby with respect to said bracket, while holding all the other recited parts rigid with one another;and so that an additional increment of such unscrewing serves to permit relative sliding movement between said parallel portions of said boom and said clamping members, while still retaining the connection between said stud member and said bracket;and (f) additional means for locating and holding said stud member at a predetermined position with respect to said bracket, except when said thumbscrew member is unscrewed a still further and substantial extent from said stud member.
  4. 4
Clamping means in accordance with claim 3, in which said pair of clamping members engage the parallel portions of said boom with the latter arranged uniformly on opposite sides of the threaded connection between said stud member and said thumbscrew member, in which there are electrical conductors connected to a microphone carried by said boom, and diametrical slot means in said clamping members through which said conductors pass in a direction substantially parallel with the parallel portions of said boom, one of the threaded members, consisting of said stud member and said thumbscrew member, being slotted to permit the diametrical passage of said conductors as aforesaid.
  5. 5
Clamping means in accordance with claim 3, further comprising:a cable including conductors connected to a microphone carried by said boom, a part having an aperture surrounding the inter-threaded portions of said stud member and said thumbscrew member, means mechanically connecting said cable to said part, so that any tension which may be exerted on said cable will be sustained by said clamping means rather than being transmitted through said conductors to said microphone, 10 and flange means on said part, engaging a portion of said U-shaped bracket at the assembled position of the parts, to prevent relative rotation of said part about the axis of the threaded portions of said stud member and said thumbscrew member, while permitting relative rotation about said axis between said stud member and said thumbscrew member on the one hand and said U-shaped bracket on the other.
  6. 6
Clamping means in accordance with claim 1, in which said thumbscrew member includes an externally threaded bolt portion, and said stud member includes an internally threaded, diametrically slotted extension arranged to be threaded onto said bolt portion of said thumbscrew member at the operative position of the parts.
  7. 7
Clamping means in accordance with claim 1, further comprising:(1) a spring detent in said stud member;and (2) a part rigid with said U-shaped bracket having a recess therein for receiving an extended portion of said detent at the operative position of the parts for resiliently predetermining the location of said stud member and for preventing inadvertent movement thereof away from said U -shaped bracket even when said thumbscrew member is at least partly unscrewed from said stud member, so that the latter is not caused to grip said U-shaped bracket by the tight screwing together of these parts.
  8. 8
Clamping means in accordance with claim 1, further comprising interlocking means including a resilient member disposed between a portion of said stud member and a portion of said thumbscrew member effective to prevent inadvertent disassembly of said clamping assembly even when said thumbscrew member is wholly unscrewed from said stud member and in a manner independent of any clamping action between said assembly and said U-shaped bracket.
  9. 9
Clamping means in accordance with claim 8, in which said interlocking means comprises a flange portion on one of the two threaded members consisting of said stud member and said thumbscrew member, and a spring ring mounted in the other of said two members arranged to engage behind said flange portion, so that even when said stud member and said thumbscrew member are completely unscrewed from one another, disassembly thereof will be resiliently prevented by said flange portion engaging said spring ring.
  10. 10
Clamping means in accordance with claim 1, in which said means for graspingly engaging a portion of said boom includes a pair of friction members, each having a portion surrounding interthreaded portions of said stud member and said thumbscrew member, and a compression spring arranged concentrically with said interthreaded portions of said stud member and said thumbscrew member and tending to urge said friction members toward one another so as to prevent their displacement with respect to the portion of said boom therebetween even at the time said stud member and said thumbscrew member are unscrewed from one another, but not otherwise wholly disassembled from one another.
