MODE OF MARKING STOCK.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,619, dated August 14, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, John Merry, of the county of Eldorado and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Mode of 5 Branding Stock; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.

The nature of my invention consists in providing a self-advertising brand for stock 10 by stamping upon suitably shaped buttons the name and location of the owner and fastening them upon the horn and ear by means of a lock herein described.

To enable others skilled in the art to use 15 my invention I will proceed to describe its * construction and application.

I construct of any suitable metal, buttons of the shape of Figures 1 and 2 and stamp upon their circular faces the name and loca20 tion of the owner as shown in the accompanying drawing. Fig. 3 is a sectional drawing of Fig. 1.

A and B are two circular flanges screwing into each other in the manner shown. 25 Through the center of the flange A I drill the hole C leaving a shoulder near the bottom. The small hole penetrating into B contains a thread.

Fig. 4 is a screw having a right handed thread corresponding to the thread in B and 30 a left-handed thread corresponding to the thread in the key Fig. 5 separated by a narrow flange. The brand is locked by turning the screw into its key firmly by means of a wrench and meeting it in the hole C and 35 turning until the screw is left in the brand. The same lock is applied to Fig. 2, of which Fig. 6 is a sectional drawing. The ear brand is applied by cutting a hole through the ear and inserting the flange B. A is then 40 screwed on and the lock applied. The horn brand is applied by screwing it upon the horn and inserting the lock so as to intercept the thread.
