To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, Edward Krahen beihl and Paul Rice, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylva5 nia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coverings for Steam Boilers,. Pipes, and other Heated Surfaces; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as io will enable others skilied in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to an improvement in coverings for steam pipes, boilers, &c., the object being to provide a covering or jacket 15 which shall be so constructed that air-spaces Shall be formed at intervals between the covering or jacket and boiler or pipe, and thus secure a more perfect non-conductor of heat; and with this end in view our invention con20 sists in certain novel features of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a jacket or covering 25 embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of· our improvement applied to a pipe. Fig. 3 is a modification.

A represents a covering or jacket, made of any desired material, but preferably composed 30 of layers of paper secured together, or paperpulp, the inner surface of the same being lined with asbestus, plaster, or other desired fireproof material when it is desired that the covering withstand a great degree of heat, said 35 cover being also cut longitudinally to more easily apply it to the pipe B, the edges being secured in any desired manner. The covering is fluted or provided with corrugations C, the same being formed when the covering is compressed into shape. By these means air-spaces 4 E’are formed at intervals between the covering and the pipe or boiler, only a small portion of the covering coming in contact with said pipe or boiler, and thus presenting but a small surface for the transmission of heat, the air-spaces 4 E forming a good non-conductor.

The corrugations may be formed in any desired shape, one form being shown in Fig. 3 . of the drawings, and may also be made of any desired size. 5
