To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Henry C. Tallmadge, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 5 Brackets for Tightening the Heads of Musical Instruments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification, in which— io Figure 1 is a vertical section of a banjo, showing attachment of bracket. Fig. 2 is a view of the separate parts of the bracket. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the tube b of the bracket.

Similar letters of reference in the several drawings indicate the same parts.

My invention relates to devices for tightening- the parchment heads of musical instruments; and it consists of a bracket having the 20 following parts: Referring to the drawings, Fig. 2, δ is a tube having an interior screwthread, as shown in Fig. 3, an exterior screwthread cut on its lower edge, and a nut-like enlargement, b', near its upper end. The in 25 terior and exterior screw-threads run in opposite directions, c is a hook adapted to engage with the rim of a musical instrument. In Fig. 1 the hook c is shown attached to the rim R of a banjo. The hook c has on one side 30 a ring, d, and is perforated by a screw-hole, c. d is a screw-cap adapted to fit onto the lower end of tube b. e is an upper hook having a screw-thread cut on its shank and adapted to screw into tube b. f is a screw to be 35 screwed through the rim of the instrument and into hook c at c.

My invention is used as follows: Referring to Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, the hook c is attached to the lower side of the rim 40 R by passing the screw f through the rim and into the hook c at c. The tube b is then passed through the ring d of hook c, and the screw-cap d is screwed onto the tube below the ring d. The tube b is free to turn in the ring d, but the cap d prevents its withdrawal. 45 The upper hook, e, is then hooked over the upper side of the hoop on the rim R, and is screwed into the tube b by turning- the said tube either with the fingers or by a wrench applied at the nut-like enlargement of the tube b. 50

I am aware that screw-brackets for musical instruments have heretofore been made, and I do not claim the screw, broadly.
