Claims. (CI. 224—1)

The present invention relates to a support for a gun or a rifle for wearing by an individual exteriorly of the clothing of the individual.

An object of the present invention is to provide a support for a gun or rifle which lends itself to support of such gun or rifle on the body of an individual in a position in which it leaves the hand of the individual free and from which position the gun is easily shifted to a “ready” position.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a gun support which lends itself to support of a gun on the body of an individual in such a position that the gun will not be dislodged if the individual stumbles or falls.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a gun support which may be dependingly hung from the shoulders of an individual and one, when so hung, which can be shifted on the body of the individual so as to enable the gun to be carried in positions under or cradled in an arm, across the chest or back, and to be easily shifted from each of such positions to a position of use.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide a gun support which is simple in structure, one sturdy in construction and economical to manufacture and assemble, and one which is highly effective in action.

These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is an elevational view of the upper body portion of an individual, showing the gun support according to the present invention in a position of use;

Figure 2 is an elevational view of a portion of the gun support, showing a portion of the rifle supported thereon, the rifle portion being shown in full lines and in dotted lines in two positions of support;

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3—3 of Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4—4 of Figure 3;

Figure 5 is an exploded view showing the components of the assembly shown in Figures 2 and 3;

Figure 6 is an isometric view showing a modified form of the attaching means used with the present invention; and

Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7—7 of Figure 6.

Referring in greater detail to the drawings in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the gun support according to the present invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 10 and comprises a hanger plate 12 arranged in an upright direction and having on one face thereof a vertically disposed slideway 14. The slideway 14 is embodied in a vertically disposed bar 16 having its upper and lower end portions 18 and 20, respectively, lying in the plane of the adjacent face of the hanger plate 12 and fixedly secured thereto by rivets 22 or other suitable means.

The bar 16 has an outwardly bowed portion 24 extending from the lower end portion 20 toward a point inwardly of and spaced from the upper end portion 18. The bar 16 has a substantially straight portion 26 projecting inwardly of and connected to the upper end of the bowed portion 24. A slot 28 extends inwardly of the upper end of the bowed portion 24 and is in communication with an aperture provided in the straight portion 26 of the bar 16, the aperture being designated by the reference numeral 30. The aperture 30 constitutes an enlarged open upper end for the slideway 14 consisting in the slot 28.

A first form of an attaching means is shown in Figures 2 to 5, inclusive, and a second form of such attaching means is shown in Figures 6 and 7. The first form of such attaching means embodies a diamond-shaped plate 32, although other shaped plates may be substituted therefor, .fixedly secured by screws 34 to one side of the stock of a rifle 36. The second form of the attaching means embodies a block 38 having one face curved and conformably shaped to fit the side of a rifle barrel 40 and secured thereto by means of metal screws 42 and forming a support for a vertically disposed bar 44. Each of the attaching means has a stud 46, 46' constituting a connector, projecting perpendicularly therefrom and having a head 48, 48' on the free end thereof. The head 48, 48', is freely insertable and withdrawable through the aperture 30 in the straight portion 26 of the bar 16 and the stud 46, 46', is slidable along and rotatable in the slot 28 in the bar 16 upon insertion of the head 48, 48', respectively, through the aperture 30.

A vertically disposed plate 50, constituting a suspension member, has its lower end connected by means of a rivet 52 to the upper portion of the hanger plate 12 with a washer 54 therebetween for free rocking movement of the plate 50 about a horizontal axis from the full line position in Figure 2 to the dotted line position.

Hamess means, embodying a strap 56 having its ends received in loops 58, also receiving midportions of clips 60, is carried by the suspension member plate 50 for support of the plate 50 from the shoulder portions of an individual, the individual being shown in Figure 1 and designated by the reference numeral 62. A rivet 64 connects each of the clips 60 to the adjacent portion of the plate 50 for limited swinging movement about a horizontal axis and enabling the strap 56 to assume a position comfortable to the individual in all positions of support of the rifle or gun 36 forwardly of the individual, under the arm or cradled in the arm of the individual or over the back or chest of the individual.

While only preferred embodiments of the present invention are here shown and described, other embodiments are contemplated and numerous changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
