A., Geneva, Switzerland, a Swiss society -Application May 16, 1955, Serial No. 508,587 Claims priority, application Luxembourg May 26,1954 10 4 Claims. (Cl. 42—69) The, present invention relates to firearms and in particular rifles intended to be fitted with grenade launchers. 15 The object of my invention is to provide a firearm of this kind which is better adapted to meet the requirements of practice than those used up to the present time, and in particular which is less dangerous to handle. Such firearms include a trigger and a trigger guard ar- 20 ranged in such manner that for normally firing the arm, the soldier inserts his forefinger between the trigger and the front part of the trigger guard so as to be able to pull the trigger. According to the present invention, there is provided a trigger control device including an oblong 25 lever extending substantially in the direction of the line! of fire of the arm and on one side of the trigger guard, in combination with means for movably mounting said part on said trigger guard so that said part can be actuated in a direction transverse to said line of fire by the 30 tips of the fingers (the word finger being used specifically to designate the four extremities of the hand other than the thumb) of the soldier’s hand curved under the trigger guard with the ball of the thumb applied against the side of the firearm opposed to that on which said oblong 35 part is mounted, said part carrying means for engaging the trigger when said part is moved toward the trigger guard transversely to the line of fire. Preferred embodiments of the present invention will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying 40 drawings, given merely by way of example and in which:Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a grenade launching rifle made according to a first embodiment of the invention. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are, respectively, a side view, a bottom view and a rear view of the trigger control device belong- 45 ing to said rifle. Figs. 5 to 8 are views similar to Figs. 1 to 4 respectively and showing a second embodiment of the invention. The drawings show a rifle which may be used either for firing bullets in the usual way or for launching grenades by means of a launcher fitted on said rifle. The rifle stock is designated by reference numeral 1. A trigger 2, which may be of any conventional kind, is for instance pivoted to said stock. When a shot is to be fired, either to fire a bullet or to launch a grenade, 59 trigger 2 is pivoted rearwardly. In the usual fashion, trigger 2 is protected against accidental operation thereof by a trigger guard 3 constituted by a curved piece of metal surrounding the trigger. Such an arrangement is quite suitable when the rifle 60 is firing bullets. On the contrary, when the rifle is fitted with a grenade launcher, the rifle butt is no longer applied against the soldier’s shoulder. In this case, the rifle is tightly held . between the right side of the soldier’s body and his right elbow, the front part of the rifle being held by his left hand. In such a position, the rifle cannot be held as strongly as in the preceding case and the recoil is much more important. If the soldier inserts his forefinger be- γθ tween the trigger and the trigger guard and if he does not manage to withdraw said forefinger sufficiently quickly, 2,841,908 a trigger pivoted to said stock, a trigger guard carried by said stock surrounding said trigger, an oblong lever pivoted to said trigger guard on the left hand side thereof about an axis parallel to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the firearm and at right angles to the line of fire thereof, said lever extending in a direction substantially parallel to said line of fire, and its dimension in this direction being greater than the width of the palm of a human, hand, and resilient means for urging said lever away from said trigger guard;said lever including a part shaped and positioned for cooperating with said trigger to actuate it when said lever is pushed toward said trigger guard. 2. A firearm which comprises, in combination, a stock, a trigger pivoted to said stock, a trigger guard carried by said stock surrounding said trigger, an oblong lever pivoted to said trigger guard on the left hand side thereof about an axis parallel to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the firearm and at right angles to the line of fire thereof, said lever extending in a direction substantially parallel to said line of fire, and its dimension in this direction being greater than the width of the palm of a human hand, and resilient means for urging said lever away from said trigger guard, said lever including a cam integral therewith for cooperating with said trigger to actuate it when said lever is pushed toward said trigger guard.
- 3A firearm which comprises, in combination, a stock, a trigger pivoted to said stock, a trigger guard carried by said stock surrounding said trigger, an oblong lever pivoted to said trigger guard on the left hand side thereof about an axis parallel to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the firearm and at right angles to the line of fire thereof, said lever extending in a direction substantially parallel to said line of fire, and its dimension in this direction being greater than the width of the palm of a human hand, and resilient means for urging said lever 6 away from said trigger guard, said lever including an arm rigid therewith for cooperating with said trigger to actuate it when said lever is pushed toward said trigger guard.
- 4A firearm which comprises, in combination, a stock, 10 a trigger pivoted to said stock, a trigger guard carried by said stock surrounding said trigger, an oblong lever pivoted to said trigger guard on one side thereof about an axis parallel to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the firearm and at right angles to the line of fire thereof, said 15 lever extending in a direction substantially parallel to said line of fire and its dimension in this direction being greater than the width of the palm of a human hand, and resilient means for urging said lever aiway from said trigger guard, said lever including a part shaped and positioned for cp20 operating with said trigger to actuate it when said lever is pushed toward said trigger guard. Patented July 8, 1958 he is liable to suffer injuries which may be serious. Any -false move may result in a broken forefinger.
The object of the present invention is to avoid this drawback., .According to the invention, there is provided a trigger control device intended to be used when the gun is to launch grenades and constituted as follows.
On one side of the trigger guard 3 there is provided an oblong lever 4 extending substantially in a direction parallel to the direction of fire of the rifle. This part 4 is movably carried by the rifle and in. particular by the trigger guard in such manner- that the soldier can move part 4 transversely by means of the finger tips of his right hand ' (Fig. 4) curved below the trigger guard and the ball of the thumb of which is applied against the rifle side op- posed to that on which lever 4 is mounted. Suitable means are provided for transmitting this transverse movement of part 4 to the trigger in order to actuate it. With such an arrangement, recoil of the rifle is no longer dangerous because said rifle will then slip inside the soldier’s hand. .- . '
Preferably, as shown by the drawing, lever 4 constitutes a kind of lever, of rounded shape in the outward direction, which is pivoted to the trigger guard about an axis 5 parallel to the plane of longitudinal symmetry of the rifle and substantially at right angles to the line of fire. A return spring 6 urges said lever 4 away from trigger guard 3. ...... .
In the preferred embodiment illustrated by the drawing, lever 4 is located on the left hand side of trigger guard 3 so that on the one hand it can be actuated as above explained (see Fig. 4) and on the other hand the right hand side of the trigger guard is left free so as to enable the soldier to engage his forefinger between trigger 2 and the trigger guard when he is firing bullets with the rifle butt applied against his shoulder.
Lever 4 may be permanently fixed to trigger guard 3. However it seems preferable to mount it in a removable fashion, for instance by means of side plates 7 located on either side of trigger guard 3 and connected together by means of screws 8. The left hand side plate 7 is provided with a boss in which the pivot pin 5 of lever 4 is mounted.
The means for transmitting the transverse motion of lever 4 to trigger 2 may be made as follows:
In the construction of Figs. 1 to 4, lever 4 carries, rigid therewith, a kind of cam 9 which cooperates with trigger 2 when lever 4 is moved in the direction of the arrow of Fig. 3 to pivot said trigger rearwardly. This arrangement is advantageous when the displacement of the trigger is relatively short.
When the movement of the trigger is to be longer, it is advantageous to make use of the arrangement of Figs. 5 to 8 where lever 4 carries an extension or lever arm 10 which is applied against trigger 2 and pushes it rearwardly when lever 4 is moved in the direction of the arrow of Fig. Ί.
Spring 6 is adapted to keep either cam 9 or lever arm 10 in a position such that they do not exert any rearward thrust on trigger 2.
In a general manner, while I have, in the above description, disclosed what I deem to be practical and efficient embodiments of my invention, it should be well understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition and form of the parts without departing from the principle of the present invention as comprehended within the scope of the accompanying claims.
