VENTILATED MATTRESS QUILT Norval P. Schreiner, Springfield, Mo. Application July 22, 1954, Serial No. 445,019 1 Claim. (Cl. 5—334)

This invention relates to a mattress quilt and more 15 particularly to a mattress quilt formed with openings therethrough for the free passage of air to ventilate the mattress as required by the user thereof.

It is a major object of this invention to provide an improved ventilated mattress quilt of the type to be more 20 particularly described hereinafter for a mattress or other padded article which is so ventilated as to prevent the overheating and excitement of certain muscles anjd organs of the human body while resting on the mattress, of the muscles and organs in the human body which overheating 25 causes the blood supply to be drawn from the legs and feet thus creating a possible contribution to the gradual development of varicose veins.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved ventilated mattress quilt of this kind on which 30 users may obtain a healthful, refreshing sleep at day or night.

Yet a further object of this invention is to provide an improved mattress quilt of this kind having easily disengageable and replaceable sections which may be removed 35 and replaced by a user of my quilt thus adding to the longevity of the quilt and especially to those portions which bear about 65% of the weight of the human body. This quilt may also be advantageously employed as a cover for chairs, automobile seats and many other uses 40 for a ventilated quilt of this kind.

Yet a further object of this invention is to provide the consumer with an improved mattress quilt having the type of sleep-time ventilation best suited to his body temperature and the climate in which he resides. It is ob- 45 served that this quilt may be manufactured in a manner that will incorporate any one or more of the five different ventilating structures hereinafter to be described. Furthermore, this quilt is constructed of easily disengageable and replaceable sections which may be removed and re- 50 placed by the user thus adding to the longevity of the quilt and especially to those portions which bear about 65% of the weight of the human body. This quilt may also be advantageously employed as an upholstery padding for chairs, automobile seats and other items in need 55 of seating ventilation.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.

Heretofore, so called mattress quilts have been fre- 65 quently used in homes and hospitals for the sole purpose of protecting the mattresses from sleep-time body odors. It is a major object of this invention to not only protect the mattress on which it is used . . . but also to provide a healthful and refreshing sleep for the persons using 70 this ventilated mattress quilt, by providing the mattress quilt with ventilated openings therethrough, so that air about the sleeper may be free to pass through the quilt either to or from the individual.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 designates generally a mattress quilt constructed according to an embodiment of my invention and engaged on the upper surface of a mattress 11 in a covering manner so that a person may lie on the mattress quilt and mattress to obtain a healthful refreshing nap or sleep thereon during the days or nights.

The mattress quilt 10 is formed and designed in much the same manner as a conventional type of quilt whether or not the quilt is used to cover a mattress. The mattress quilt 10 then is rectangular in configuration formed of a sheet of fabric designed into a panel having panel ends 12 which are separated along the length of the quilt with a ^center or intermediate panel 14 between the end panels

Each one of the panels has a transverse edge 15 thereon within which and between which a cord 17 may be laced for holding the panels together when the desired mattress quilt 10 is formed.

Certain ones of the panels have a plurality of cushioned pads 18 thereon and certain other ones of the panels have an elongated pad or strip 19 in place of the pad 18 extending along the length of the panel.

The panels are provided with ventilating openings 20 therethi ough along both the longitudinal and transverse edges of the pad edges of the pad 18 or longitudinally of the pad strip 19.

While the mattress quilt 10 will preferably have a collection of different colored pads 18 thereon some of the panels may also be provided with a mesh net 21 at certain places instead of the pads as clearly shown at the right end of Fig. 1 of the drawings. Also in place of the pad 18 merely providing a cushion type of pad the pad may also have a design on the upper surface thereof as the design 22 in the drawings.

In those panels of the mattress quilt having the longitudinally extending pad strips 19 thereon a nap 24 may be provided between the adjacent pad strips also shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

As thus described, the mattress quilt 10 has removable and replaceable panels which are removable upon disengagement of the cord 17 through the edges of adjacent panels so that other panels may be located in their place in the mattress quilt 10.

By removing and replacing the panels the wear of the mattress quilt 10 may be considerably extended as it is believed that the wear is distributed on the surface of the mattress quilt since it has been found that the mattress quilt thus formed will take about 65% of the human weight of a person lying thereon.

Use of the present invention is not restricted to sleeptime ventilation of mattresses. The ventilated mattress quilt may also be used as an upholstery padding in living room furniture, automobile and other seats in transportation equipment.

While the specific details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.
