This invention relates to improvements in folders in combination with container covers and more particularly to folders attached to covers having removable can opening tools or keys fastened thereto.

The packers of many products which are destined for retail sale, such as candy and shortening, prefer to package their goods in cans that are easily opened by tearing a cover fastening strip from the can or otherwise removing the cover. A strip tearing key or removing tool is usually furnished with each can and attached to the can cover.

Manufacturers of merchandise packed in such cans often^ desire to stimulate sales by offering a small item as a “give away” premium. The problem of how to get the premium to the retail purchaser or to put into the hands of the purchaser some other article useful with the packaged product, is complicated at times by the fact that the contents of the can are liquid, oily or sticky. Due to the nature of the can contents it is not practical to place the premium in such a can. As a result some manufacturers have been forced to rely on retailers to give tne purchaser the premium when a sale is made. Frequently the retailers forget the premiums and the full effect of the give away campaign is not achieved.

Other manufacturers have attempted to distribute premiums by having the retail purchaser write for the article enclosing a can label with the request. However, this has not been fully effective as there is an inertia on the part of the average person not to write for a give away.

The present invention permits a manufacturer to securely attach a folder containing the premium article to the cover of a can and thereby put the give away into tne nanus of each retail purchaser.

An object of the present invention is to provide a folder within which a give away premium may be placed.

A further object is to provide a folder adapted to fit around a can opening tool attached to a can cover.

Another object is to provide a folder which provides convenient access means for lifting the folder away from the container cover.

Although in the accompanying drawings preferred embodiments of the present invention are shown and described m this specification, it is to be understood that tnese are not intended to be either exhaustive or limiting of the invention, but, on the contrary, are chosen for the Purpose of illustrating the invention in order that others skilled in the art may so fully understand the invention, its principles and the application thereof, that they may emoody it and adapt it in numerous forms, each as may be best suited to the requirements of its particular use.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a folder fitted about a can opening tool attached to a can cover;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary side view of a typical can showing the can fastening strip;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a folder fitted about a can opening tool, said tool being attached to a can cover;

Figure 4 is a plan view of a folder opened up to show the location of a premium package attached to the folder;

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view showing the reaction of the folder sheets when the can opening tool is raised away from the can cover;

Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view showing how a chordal edge of the folder may be used as a convenient access means to lift the folder away from the can cover;

Figure 7 is a plan view showing a folder rotated in relation to the can opening tool;

Figure 8 is an opened up plan view of a multi-sheet folder with a modified lower folder sheet.

Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, a folder 10 is shown with a can 12. A can opening tool or key 14 is removably attached at 16 to a can cover 18. The tool 14 is advan10 tageously of the key type with a shank 20 and a loop 22.

The tool 14 is intended to serve primarily as a severing means for removing a tearing strip 24 which integrally unites the cover 18 to the can 12. However, I advantageously use the tool 14 as a fastening means for hold15 mg the folder 10 in a fixed position on the can cover 18.

A flange 26 around the perimeter of the cover 18 forms a recess 28 which serves as a receptacle for the folder 10.

The folder 10 shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4 is multi-sheet.’ An upper folder sheet 30 and a lower folder sheet 32 are 20 advantageously joined at a chordal edge 34. An opening 36 in the upper sheet 30 is preferably smaller than an opening 38 in the lower folder sheet 32. The upper opening 36 is sufficient to accommodate the loop 22 of tool 14.

To apply a folder to a can cover the folder 10 is first placed in the recess 28 and one edge of the upper opening 36 is slipped under the loop 22, the opposite edge of the opening 36 being above the tool 14. The folder 10 is then adjusted so that it is within the perimeter of the cover ^da”^{se 26}’ ^{Tlle too1 14 and the cover} flange 26 hold the 30 folder 10 in position until its removal is desired.

A premium package 40 is placed between the upper sheet 30 and lower sheet 32 of the folder 10. In Figure 4 the premium 40 is shown securely attached to the lower χί ³²’ ^{is desired} the premium 40 may be attached to the upper sheet 30, or when there are more than two sheets it may be positioned between any two of them However, I have found it preferable to attach it to a single, lower sheet 32. This favorable location insures that the user who opens the folder 10 will see the premium pack40 age 40.

Figure 5 shows the movement of the upper sheet 30 when the tool 14 is lifted away from the cover 18. The tool 14 is lifted when it is to be used for removing the . metal tearing strip 24. When the tool 14 is lifted at its 45 loop 22 the upper sheet 30 also is raised. The lower sheet 32 due to its substantially larger opening 38 tends to remain in place against the cover 18.

The raising of the upper sheet 30 while the lower sheet 32 remains in place reveals the presence of the premium 50 40. This insures that the can user will see the “give away” or other item which is to be brought to the attention of the user.

It is possible that the purchaser of the can may not wish to remove the cover 18, but will want first to use 55 the premium 40. If the tool 14 is removed from the cover 18 so that the folder 10 may be removed there is danger that the tool 14 will be misplaced or lost. To prevent this the present invention allows the folder 10 to be removed from the can 12 without detaching the tool 14.

Referring to Figure 6, a folder is shown being lifted at its chordal edge 34. When the folder 10 is lifted at its chordal edge 34 the opposite folder end 42 tends to push against the cover flange 26. By rotating the folder 10 about the tool 14, as shown in Figure 7, the upper sheet opening 36 may be positioned at a substantial angle to the tool loop 22 and the folder 10 may be slipped from beneath the loop 22 while the tool 14 remains in place.

Locating the premium 40 near the chordal edge 34 tends to raise said edge to an elevation near to the top of the 76 cover flange 26 thereby advantageously providing greater access to the folder.

A modification of the can cover folder 10 is shown in

Figure 8. In cutting the lower folder sheet 32α, ear like flaps 44 are provided. The flaps 44 may be as numerous as desired. The flaps 44 are folded over and secured to the lower sheet 32α to form a desired number of envelope portions. If desired a different premium may be placed in each envelope. ;

While the illustrated embodiment of the present invention shows the can opening tool on the top can cover, it is obvious that the folder will work equally well where the tool is attached to the bottom of the can. Cover as used in this specification includes both the top and bottom closures of a can.

The above described embodiments oi the illustrated label are obviously not the limits of the present invention. To anyone skilled in the art, modifications undoubtedly will occur which cannot be practiced without violating the scope and spirit of the following claims.
