IMPROVEMENT IN MAKING SOAP.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 278, dated July 17,1837.

To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, Danl. E. Stilwell, of the city of Utica, in the county of Oneida and Siate of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of MakingSoap; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of making the above-mentioned soap.

To four quarts of soft water put eight ounces of common bar or hard soap. Let it be placed over a slow fire arfd stirred occasionally until the soap is all dissolved. Then add four ounces of sub-carbonate of soda, bring it to a boil, and when cool it is fit for use. I sometimes take ten ounces of soap and three ounces of subcarbonate or make other variations in the proportions of the ingredients.

I do not claim the mere mixing of a solution of soap with the alkali, but the forming of a combination, such as is herein described, suited to become an aiticle of commeice.
