This invention relates to a new and improved razor I⁵blade scraper which is safe to use, having positive means holding the blade retracted within a housing or extended for operation, the device including a blade holder which holds a single edge razor blade selectively either with the sharp edge outwardly located for operation, or located ²⁰within the holder in safe condition.

Other objects of the invention include the provision of a razor blade scraper as above described including an extremely light-weight and inexpensive molded housing having a handle at one end and an open end opposite ²⁵thereto and including within the housing a pair of spaced parallel guides which are molded integrally with the housing and are spaced from the edge walls of the housing, the latter also acting as guide walls with relation to the razor blade holder above referred to; said razor blade ³⁰holder having a resilient member for locking a head on a finger-piece selectively in either one of a pair of apertures in the housing, so that the blade holder may be extended and held or retracted, and said blade holder having means for engaging with said guide walls and guides ³⁵above described for guiding the same and holding the blade and holder steady and fixed during operation of the device.

The invention further relates to arangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described ⁴⁰and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

This invention has for its principal object the provision of a light-weight extremely safe, inexpensive razor blade scraper which is easily manipulated to place the blade in housed condition where it cannot accidentally cut, or selectively in extended condition for operation. To this end, there is provided a molded plastic housing generally θθ indicated at 10, said housing having a handle 12 which may be solid or apertured as in Fig. 1 for lightness of weight. The housing is fiat and hollow forwardly of the handle, i. e. to the left in the drawings as shown in Fig. 2, and the side edge walls thereof as at 14 provide a pair of spaced guides. Centrally located within the housing are integrally molded transversely spaced, rib-like guides 16 which are spaced from the edge guide walls 14 and which terminate well short of the open edge 18 of the housing. The edge guide walls 14 extend to the open edge 18.

The blade holder itself comprises a pair of thin metal ‘ plates which are depressed generally centrally thereof at 20 to contact each other and they are secured together at these points as for instance by welding. At either edge, the two plates are spaced, see particularly Fig. 6, and form in general the parts indicated by the reference numerals 22, 24, 26 and 28. These parts are secured together at 20 but are free at the edges and may be opened up between the forward lips 30. These lips press upon each other and form a resilient gripping means for the razor blade.

The elements 22, 24 form a holding element for the rear edge 32 of a single edge razor blade 34 having a sharp edge as at 36, and the rear edge 32 may be slid endwise into and out of the member portion formed by the members 22 and 24 at either end thereof. The blade 34 then extends out between the lips 30 and is resiliently clamped thereby.

When the razor blade is removed from this holder at either end, it may be reversed and slid in with the rear edge 32 extending outwardly and the sharp edge safely housed between the members 22 and 24, the lips 30 clamping and holding the blade in this position.

At the rear portion of the blade holder, there is an extended resilient tongue or member 38 having at its end a finger-piece 40, the latter having a large head 42. This resilient member 38 bears upon the top wall of the housing so as to tend to hold the blade holder resiliently where located. However, the head 42 which is locatable in either of the apertures 44 or 46, see Fig. 1, locks the blade holder in either fully housed position or partially extended condition for use of the razor blade, and this locking action is accomplished by the tongue 38 urging head 42 outwards. Member 38 is attached to the blade holder generally centrally and the members 26 and 28 are cut away to form slots 47 at either side of member 38 to slidingly receive the guide walls 16.

Passage or slot 48 connects apertures 44 and 46 and extends forwardly toward the open end of the housing from aperture 44. The member 40 may be slid to the extreme left-end of this pasage, so that it is then in the position indicated in Fig. 2, wherein the blade may be slid out laterally at either end thereof for changing the blade or for reversing it.

It will be seen that this invention provides an inexpensive but safe razor blade scraper which is easily manipulated to house the blade completely or to expose the sharp edge thereof for scraping operations, or to completely expose the blade for removal and reversal in the holder for additional safety in shipping or storing the scraper when it is not being used.
