METAL SHEET AND CORNER PROTECTOR

This invention relates in general to a corner protector and is more particularly described as a corner protector for sheet metal such as thin sheet steel, copper, aluminum, and other metals or even sheets of paper, fiber, cardboard, and the like.

When sheet materials of these various kinds are stacked for storage or are handled for shipment, they may be easily bent, crumpled or damaged at the corner or corners, which results in a loss of time to straighten out the bent corner or any material to cut away the damaged portion.

The present invention provides an easily attachable thin angular protector which may be easily applied to a single corner or to all of the corners of a sheet of material for the purpose of protecting the material while it is being handled or when it is stacked or stored.

An important object of the invention is to provide a corner protector which may be quickly and easily applied to one or all of the corners of a sheet.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pressure sensitive adhesive on the protector so that it will adhere to any comer of sheet material to which it is applied and may be easily removed therefrom without damaging or defacing the corner or in applying or removing the protector.

A further object of the invention is to provide a foldable angular piece of sheet material which is scored so that it will fold over the opposite side faces of a sheet material at the comer thereof, the outer face of the protector being scuff-resistant and the inner face of the material having a pressure sensitive adhesive for causing it to adhere closely to both surfaces of the sheet to which it is applied.

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a corner protector in accordance with this invention showing the pressure adhesive side and the score line upon which it is foldable;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a corner protector as shown in Fig. 1 which is partially folded on the score line;

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a sheet having protectors in accordance with this invention applied to all four corners of a sheet; and

Fig. 4 illustrates an end elevation of a number of stacked sheets showing the way the protectors will rest upon each other spacing the corners of adjacent sheets apart and protecting them at the corners.

Metal sheets are frequently stacked forming aisles and passageways so that the corners are exposed not only for defacing engagement of the sheets, particularly at the corners, but also the sharp projecting edges particularly near the comers are likely to seriously cut the clothing of workmen and to seriously deface trunks and other articles which come in contact with them.

The present invention is designed and intended to provide a protector for the metal or other material to which it is applied and also to protect persons and objects which may bmsh against or come in contact with sharp sheets at and near the corners thereof.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, this protector comprises a thin sheet 10 of paper, fiber, plastic, or other material adapted to be bent around and to be applied over the corner of a thin sheet 12 of any other material. Preferably the protector is composed of paper which may be of the order of ten or fifteen thousandths in thickness with one scuff resistant surface 14 which will resist abrasion and the other surface coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive 16.

The protector is preferably in the form of a right angle triangle having a score line 18 extending from the right angle normal to the opposite side, thus dividing the protector when folded upon the score line into two equal right angle triangles.

In applying these protectors to a sheet, they are preferably partially folded as shown in Fig. 2 upon the score line 18 which adapts them to be placed equally over opposite sides of the sheet 12 at the corner thereof, the folded portion of the protector being located over that portion of the edge which is most subject to contact due to the location of the sheets, the folded portion extending over one edge of the sheet as shown in the lower corner of Fig. 3 and over one end of the sheet as shown at the left comer of Fig. 3.

When these protectors are applied at the corners of a number of sheets which are in a stack, the sheets will be offset from each other double the thickness of the material of the protector as shown more clearly in Fig. 4, particularly at the corners thereof. If the sheets are large in extent, the central portions may come flatly together in the central portions thereof, the protectors raising the corners as represented in Fig. 4.

These protectors may be supplied in adhesively connected stacks or they may be provided in strip form oppositely related to each other, partially severed and connected in rolls if desired. To remove the protector, it is necessary only to grasp and loosen one or both of the angular corners remote from the fold line and to strip it from the sheet on both sides thereof. The pressure sensitive adhesive usually being composed of rubber or a rubber-like adhesive, does not mar, stick to or deface the sheet material and when the corner protector is removed, the sheet itself is ready for use without any further cleaning attention thereto. Although a scuff-proof paper with a presure sensitive rubberized adhesive is most desirable, other materials may be used for accomplishing the desired result.

While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described in some detail, it should be regarded as an illustration or example rather than as a limitation or restriction of the invention, since various changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
