Claim.
The invention relates to improvements in dispensing devices and more particularly to the novel construction and association of parts comprising an easily mounted, inexpensive dispensing syphon.
The object of the invention is to provide a dispensing syphon of the character referred to with novel means for attaching it to the neck of a container.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel sleeve and ring structure for mounting a dispensing syphon on the neck of a container.
Another object is to provide a dispensing syphon with novel valve means.
Another object is to provide a dispensing syphon with novel means adapting it to be easily and quickly attached to and hermetically sealed over the pouring mouth of a container.
Other and further objects of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and claim, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing which, by way of illustration, shows an exemplary embodiment and the principle thereof. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same principles may be used, and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a container showing a dispensing syphon, embodying features of the present invention, affixed thereto.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the dispensing syphon, taken substantially along line 2—2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional detail view taken substantially along line 3—3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a vertical central sectional view of a dispensing syphon embodying modified features of construction, showing parts thereof in elevation.
The dispensing syphon embodying the features of the present invention and illustrated in the accompanying drawing is of the character adapted to be detachably secured over the pouring mouth of a container, such as a bottle. As shown, the container includes a neck ί 1 having an externally beaded periphery surrounding its pouring mouth and provided, below said beaded periphery, with an external bead 12. The dispensing syphon preferably is formed from sheet material suitably drawn into the required configurations or from tubular material, It should :ci. 215—5) :
be understood, however, that it may be fabricated from any other suitable material in any other conventional manner.
The dispensing syphon consists, primarily, of a pair of separable elements consisting of a cupshaped body 13 and a sleeve (4. The sleeve 14 is; cylindrical in shape and it includes an internal' flange ί 5 suitably formed on its lower edge. A · pair of diametrically opposed bayonet slots 16 are provided in the cylindrical side wall thereof, each slot opening on the upper edge of the sleeve for purposes to be understood as the description proceeds. The inside diameter of the flange 15 . is sufficiently large as to permit the sleeve to. be slipped loosely over the bead 12 of the neck 11. when the syphon is to be mounted thereon. The flange 15 is adapted to have seated thereon, a. split retaining ring or collar 17 which has an internal diameter of such size as to snugly embrace.
the neck of the container below the bead 12. .
The body 13 is formed substantially cupshaped with its circular wall 18 depending downwai’dly from the top wall 19 thereof and is of such diameter as to have a free sliding, fit within 5 the circumferential sleeve 14. A tubular stem
21, formed axially on and extending upwardly, from the wall 19, is adapted to contain manually operable valve means including an operating cap
22. The cap 22 is, as illustrated, telescopically θ fitted over the open upper end of the tubular stem ;
and it is provided with a depending rod 23, the lower end of which carries a valve element 24. The valve element 24 is arranged to cooperate with a circular valve seat provided on the g lower end of a sleeve 25 firmly secured within and depending from the lower end of the tubular stem 2(.
The valve normally is retained in closed position as by means of a spring 26 interposed be0 tween the cap 22 and an inwardly struck circumferential bead 27 formed in the tubular stem 21. A spout 28 extends outwardly from and communicates with the tubular member 21. It should be quite evident at this time that when 5 the valve is closed communication between the interior of the container and the spout 28 is prevented. However, when the cap 22 is depressed manually, said valve is moved into open position to thereby allow the container contents to flow upwardly through the sleeve 25, tubular stem 2( and out through the spout 28.
Movement of the container contents outwardly through the spout 28, when the valve is open, is obtained by reason of the inherent pressure with2,678,747 in the containei-. This pressure is present in all packaged carbonated beverages or the like.
Obviously, means must be provided in the dispensing syphon, or in association therewith, to prevent the escape of pressure from within the container. Accordingly, the inverted cup-shaped body (3 is provided, on the inside surface of its wall (9, with a circular washer, or gasket, 29, preferably fabricated from rubber or other suitable compressible material of a kind not susceptible to rapid deterioration resulting from contact with the contents. The washer or annulus 29 has, formed integral therewith, a downwardly extending tube 31 which terminates with its open end spaced above the bottom of the container.
The compressible washer 29 is adapted to afford an hermetic seal between the inverted cupshaped top wall 19 and the end of the container neck. It is, therefore, essential that said washer 29 be compressed when the dispensing syphon is mounted in place. Such compression of the washer 29 is accomplished automatically upon mounting the body 13 on the container. As best illustrated in Figure 2, the body 13 has a pair of outwardly projecting diametrically opposed pins 32, each of which is adapted to cooperate with one of the bayonet slots i6 in sleeve 14. Inasmuch as the portions of said slots 16 extending in a circumferential direction in the sleeve 14 are inclined downwardly slightly towards their terminal ends, engagement of the pins 32 therewith and subsequent rotation of the body 13 draws said body downwardly to compress the washer 23. Such engagement and down drawing of the cup shaped body 13 also tends to draw the sleeve 14 upwardly to thereby carry the split ring Π into close engagement with the container neck bead 12. In this manner the container is hermetically sealed and inadvertent separation of the dispensing syphon from the container neck is prevented. It might be noted that the pins 32 extend outwardly of the sleeve 14 so as to afford finger engaging means when rotating the body.
Referring to the structure disclosed in Figure 4, the dispensing syphon body 13 is substantially like that discussed hereinabove and is adopted to cooperate with a retaining sleeve of the kind shown in Figure 1. Accordingly, like numbers will be used to identify corresponding parts. The Figure 4 structure differs, however, from that previously described in the construction of the valve embodied therein.
As shown, the valve includes the depressible cap 22 and rod 26. In this instance, however, the lower end of the rod 26 carries a plunger 33 which has a slide fit in a valve element 34. The valve element 34 is in the form of a nipple firmly secured at its upper end in the lower end of the tubular portion 21 and of such length that the plunger 33 remains within its end limits irrespective of whether or not the valve plunger is elevated or depressed. When in the elevated position illustrated, the plunger 33 effectively stops the flow of fluid from the interior of the container to the spout 23. However, upon depression of the cap 22, the plunger 33 is carried into a position below radial ports 35 provided in the wall of the nipple 34. The fluid contents of the container upon which the dispensing syphon is mounted is then free to flow through the ports 35 and out of the spout.
Although exemplary forms of the invention have been disclosed in the accompanying drawing and described in detail in the foregoing specification it should be understood that the invention is capable of embodying a wide variety of modifications in detail construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
