RETAINING DEVICE FOR SLIDE FASTENERS David E. Wilson, Arlington, Va. Application January 8,1952, Serial No. 265,373
Claims. (
This invention pertains to retaining devices for slide fasteners, and relates more particularly to a device for preventing the movement of a slider after it has performed the function of fully closing the conventional interlocking slide fastener structure, in the placket of dresses, flies in men’s trousers, and other openings in garments where interlocking fasteners are used. There are numerous forms of slidei· locking devices proposed and in use, some of which are comparatively simple in design and very efficient as long as they remain new. The greater portion of slider locking devices are carried on the slider member or engage locking means at the top of the conventional interlocking slide fastener structure and are subject to constant wear from daily usage and often causes trouble due to difficulty of operation. This means that the wearer of a garment having the slide fastener is confronted with a situation in which he can no longer depend on the satisfactory working of the device and is compelled to go to the expense of replacing the old damaged slide fastener with a new one.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a simple constructed retaining device for slide fasteners designed to hold the slide fastener in its fully closed position, usually at the top of the placket or garment opening, at the same time permitting the intentional movement of the slide fastener along the slide fastening structure when it is desired to open or close the garment opening.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a retaining device for sliders that may be permanently attached to the conventional pull-tab of a slide fastener and that may be used to pull the slider open and closed, and that may be attached to the waist band of a garment to provide a positive holding means and prevent unintentional movement of the slide fastener from the closed position on a garment.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a retaining device for slider fastening devices that can be manufactured cheaply by a simple stamping process with a minimum of bending to form a complete single element, having the combined function of holding the ends of the fastener device together and retaining the slider in closed position.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a slider retaining device that can be permanently-attached. to the conventional form of slide fastener and perform the equivalent in service as provided by the self-locking more costly type of slide fasteners, and also convenient to readily transfer from one garment to another should occasion require.
Another object of the invention is to provide a retaining device for slide fasteners that can be cheaply stamped out and made substantially in one working process of suitable material such as stainless steel, aluminum alloy, nonferrous met24—205.11)
....... .;. 2 als or plastic material, which is durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which it may be subjected, in every day use on a garment.
With these and other difficulties in mind it is an object of my invention to produce a retaining device for slide fasteners which is easy to apply to the pull-tab of a conventional interlocking slide fastener structure, and which when applied 10 will positively remain in permanent engagement at all times with said pull-tab, also to provide means for securing said retaining device to the waist band of a garment, and securely holding the slide fastening device in top most position of 15 its travel on the slide fastener structure thereby providing positive means against movement of the sliding device. ........
With these and other objects in view the invention will now be described with reference to the 2o accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the appended claims. In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment and two modifications thereof which my invention may assume in practice. In the accompanying draw25 ing. ,:-j . v;·; -

In the accompanying drawing I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodimpnt nn^
2,656, two modifications thereof which my invention may assume in practice. In the preferred form I have shown the invention attached to the fly of a pair rof «trousers as shown in'Figs. 1 and 2, althoughtthe device is .equally «adaptable for.use 5 in the plackets of dresses, openings in corsets or girdles or other forms of wearing apparel.
Referring more particularly to .the .drawings, in which similar reference Characters identify similar parts in the several views, I have shown 10 in Figs. 1 and 2 a fragmental view of a pair of trousers consisting of waist -band TO-attached to a garment in the usual manner, a ifly : 1:2 .to which is stitched a conventional interlocking slide fastener structure Ί4. The retaining device for the slide fastener which I shall .designate as a whole, asi6, comprises a front wing 1.8 and a back wing'20 and an integral neck portion 22 forming the body of . the retaining device. (The integral neck member 22 .by virtue of .its resiliency when engaged with The waist .band tO, causes.' the front wing. member (8 and the. back wing member .20 to .tightly clamp on .the waist band in a manner to securely hold the. retaining device- in position, on the waist band. The front wing T 8 is cut away.at 24 to form ...a downwardly extending arm :26 Which at its lower end is reduced as shown at‘27 on the.drawing and terminates'into a hook shaped member 28. The hooked .shaped member 28 being integral- with the reduced portion Of said downwardly extending arm, is.provided with ...a. depression. 30. midway its length, said depression forming,a raised stop member 32 on the inside face, of the hook shaped member to serve as a means for preventing the.unintentional disengagement of the, pulltab . 34 carried by .the, conventional interlocking slide fastener, structure. ..In the cut awaysportion of the front wing'24 I provide a recessed pocket .38 which is designed to permit the retaining (device To. slip. in.back of the fastening button . 40« sufficient distance to maintain a vertical-alignment of The. arm member .2 G and its integral.hook.member:28,.with the slider member'3 6 when in closed position at the top of , the fastener, structure.
..The back.wing member 20. is extended downward. half of. the overall length of the retaining device and terminates in a slightly. rounded form. ..Said back .wing.member .in. combination with- said front.wing, member providing a...suitable receiving slot 19 when, pushed down over the waist band to of the. garment. The back .wing. 20 is made, shorter than The-front wing· 18 to facilitate its riding-over · the waist band · |0 when pressed into position on the garment. ,The retaining device with the pull-tab attached is drawn to the full closed position, and slipped: over the waist band, and by reason of . its : shorter length, the retaining device will have but «a short distance to travel downward to seat onThe waist band, thus; supporting the slider fastener from sagging alter reaching the ^closed position on the garment.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing I have shown » plan view in· blank -form, indicating by dotted lines “A”—“A” and “B”—-ΛΒ” the- bending areas, for forming The device, from'the blank form. :This simple operation of, bending .and the operation of pressing the stop-member 32, is all that is required To complete, the «device: for use as a retaining device for: slide- fasteners.
In Fig. 7 of the drawing I have shown a modified form of construction in which the front wing member 18 is cut out to: form an enlarged oblong
579 aperture 42 of sufficient proportion to permit the front wing to fit around a pair of snap fasteners 44 when same are used as fastening means ; On the .upper part of a garment. Said enlarged apertui’e.42.is also adapted.to fit aroundThe conventional button 40 which is often placed on ithe waist band in various positions, not always in .direct .line with the slide fastener structure. Having this latitude of adjustment is impor, tant.as it-permits the hook member 20 to maintain an alignment with the vertical travel of the-pull-tab’ when «same is at the top of the slide .fastener , structure.
In Fig. 8 of the drawing I have shown another 15 modified form of. construction in which the device is formed of Thermoplastic with the. aperture 46 shown in oval shape in the front wing 18, to fit around the fastening button 40. The hook 30 is of metal and is provided with an extending 20 member 48 which extends through the lower portion. of the front wing member and is bent downward at 50 to form a fastening means against displacement as shown in Fig. 9 of-the drawing.
It may.be noted that I have made reference to .the “front wing” and “rear wing” and “neck” of the retaining device for slide fastener and have used the expressions as a convenient way of designating the relative location of the vari30 ous parts, it will be obvious that the terms are used in reference to. the position of the parts, as disclosed in the accompanying drawings and are not intended as limiting expressions. It should be further understood that any suitable ma35 ferial may; be used in the manufacturing of The retaining device for slide fasteners, and that any variations in the shape and relative arrangement of the parts such as come within the scope of the claims appended herewith are to be re40 garded as forming part of my invention.
