- 1What is claimed is:. 1. An ironing board attachment of the character described, comprising a frame adapted to be secured to an end portion of an ironing board, a pan member hinged to said frame for rotation around a horizontal transverse axis, support means on the frame spaced so as to underlie and support the pan member when the pan member is in a rearwardly-swung horizontal position, a pair of tubular arms pivoted to the frame on opposite sides thereof for vertical swinging move- top edges of the side arms 32, 32. Mounted on the shaft 33 are respective coiled springs 39, 39 the inner ends of the springs being secured to shaft 33 and the outer ends being hoo^-d, as shown at 40, and engaged in the apertared 10^®_ 1 ends of respective downwardly and forwardly inclined arms 41 carried by rod 37, as shown in F1Th! intermediate portion of the shaft 33 carries a spring 40' which is formed with a.loop42 ] which is engageable by a stud 43 threaded through the mid-portion of the shaft. A two-wire electric cord 49 enters junction box 4,, as shown in Figure 3. Respective single-wi cords 50 enter the sides of the bo* through tubes 47 and are connected therein to the respective wires of the line cord 49. Th single-wire cords 50 extend through the respective tubular rods 45 to the plug receptacle 46, as shown in Figure 3. ____ qo The top edges of the respective side arms 32 are each formed with cam surfaces comprising an end detent portion 51, an arcuate portion , , a forward sloping portion 53 an arcuate ores portion 54, a rear sloping portion 55 and a rear detent portion 56. An ironing board attachment of the character described, comprising a frame adapted to be secured to an end portion of an ironing board, a pan member hinged to said frame for rotation around a horizontal transverse axis, support:means on the frame spaced as to underlie and support the pan member when the pan member is in a rearwardly-swung horizontal position, respective vertical side plates pivoted to the frame on opposite sides thereof for vertical swinging movement, respective tubular arms carried by the side plates and arranged to receive the pan member therebetween, a plug receptacle carried by the ends of said arms, respective conductors extending through said arms and connected to the plug receptacle, spring means biasing the arms toward elevated positions, and resilient means carried by the frame and engaging an edge of at least one of the side plates, said edge being formed with a locking recess in which said resilient means is engageable.
- 3An ironing board attachment of the character described, comprising a frame adapted to be secured to an end portion of an ironing board, a pan member hinged to said frame for rotation around a horizontal transverse axis, support means on the frame spaced so as to underlie and support the pan member when the pan member is in a rearwardly-swung horizontal position, respective side plates pivoted to the frame on opposite sides thereof for vertical swinging movement, respective tubular arms carried by the side plates, a plug receptacle carried by the ends of said arms, respective conductors extending through said arms and connected to the plug receptacle, spring means biasing the arms toward elevated positions, a transverse shaft member extending through the frame, means on the frame guiding the shaft member for vertical movement, means on the shaft member for engaging the top edges of the side plates, and means connecting said shaft member to said spring means, said latter means urging the shaft member downwardly, said top edges being each formed with spaced locking recesses in which the shaft member is engageable.
- 4An ironing board attachment of the character described, comprising a frame adapted to be secured to an end portion of an ironing board, a pan member movably connected to said frame, a pair of tubular arms pivoted to the frame on opposite sides thereof for vertical swinging movement and arranged to receive said pan member therebetween, means on the frame arranged to support said pan member in horizontal position between said arms, a plug receptacle carried by the ends of said arms, respective conductors extending through said arms and connected to the plug receptacle, spring means biasing the arms toward elevated positions, and cooperating means carried by said arms and said spring means limiting upward movement of said arms.
- 5An ironing board attachment of the character described comprising a frame adapted to be secured to an end portion of an ironing board, a pan member hinged to said frame for rotation around a horizontal transverse axis, support means on the frame spaced so as to underlie and support the pan member when the pan member is in a rearwardly swung horizontal position, respective side plates pivoted to the frame on opposite sides thereof for vertical swinging movement, respective tubular arms carried by the side plates, a plug receptacle carried by the ends of said arms, respective conductors extending through said arms and connected to the plug receptacle, spring means biasing the arms toward elevated positions, a transverse shaft member extending through the frame, means on the frame guiding the shaft member for vertical movement, means on the shaft member for engaging the top edges of the side plates, and means connecting said shaft member to said spring means, said latter means urging the shaft members downwardly, said top edges being each formed with a locking recess in which the shaft member is engageable.
- 6An ironing board attachment of the character described comprising a frame adapted to be secured to an end portion of an ironing board, a pan member hinged to said frame for rotation around a horizontal transverse axis, support means on the frame spaced so as to underlie and support the pan member when the pan member is in a rearwardly swung horizontal position, respective side plates pivoted to the frame on opposite sides thereof for vertical swinging movement, respective tubular arms carried by the side plates and arranged to receive said pan member therebetween, a plug receptacle carried by the ends of said arms, respective conductors extending through said arms and connected to the plug receptacle, spring means biasing the arms toward elevated positions, a transverse shaft member extending through the frame, means on the frame guiding the shaft member for vertical movement, means on the shaft member for engaging the top edges of the side plates, and means connecting said shaft member to said spring means, and biasing the shaft member downwardly, said side plates including detent means lockingly engageable with the shaft member.

Claims.
Έ?<sup>28</sup> relates to·attachments for ironing boards·, and· more· particularly to a. combination collapsible iron rest and electric plug receptacle for attachment to ¢. conventional ironing; board.
A main object of the: invention is, to provide a novel and improved ironing board attachment which provides a support, for the iron, a convcniently-accessible plug receptacle for the iron, and. a footing on which the board may be supported; when it is stored,, the device being very simple- in construction, easy to attach to the- ironing board, and foldable to a substantially flat condition for storage:;
A further object, of. the invention is, to provide ' an improved iron rest attachment for an ironing board, said attachment being inexpensive, to manufacture, providing an elevated plug receptacle for the, iron adjacent the ironing board allowing the: ironing board to be located, in, any convenient position in a room, eliminating the risk of dropping the iron offi the- ironing: board when it is; not in use, and allowing the· operator to use the iron from either· side of the ironin board.
A. still· further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination flat iron, rest, elevated support for the ironing cord;, and supporting. base for the ironing board,, the- device substantially reducing the amount of labor re- 30 quired in ironing, reducing hazards of injury to the operator or damage· to the iron, and allowing the entire surface of the ironing board to be used at all times.
Further objects- and advantages of the inven- 35 tion will become apparent, from the following description and claims, and the accompanying, drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings, (( designates a conventional ironing board of the foldable type. The board ( ( includes a rigid top member (2 whose surface is covered by a pad f 3. The foldable supporting framework of the ironing board is shown generally at 14.
Secured to the rear end of the top member I ? of the_ ironing board is the combination, iron rest and plug receptacle attachment, indicated generally at 15. The device (5 comprises a pair of side plates (β, IS formed with forwardly-extending arms II. At their forward.ends the arms (7 are formed with inwardly-extending top flanges 1-8. The forward portions, of the arms (7 and. the flanges 18 are. braced by inner strut plates 1'9 welded to the inside surfaces thereof. The flanges (8 and plates (9 are formed with a plurality of apertures 20 and the side plates (6,. (6 are secured' to the under side of the rear end of top member (2 by wood screws 2 ( passing upwardly through the apertures 20, as shown in Figure 2.
Rigidly connecting the side plates (.6,. (.6 is a forwardly-facing transverse channel member 22 having a rearwardly-convex rear wall 23 to which is secured a similarly-shaped back plate 24 as by a. bolt 25. Secured to rear wall 23 by machine screws 26 m overlying relation to back plate 24 is a thick resilient pad 27 of rubber or the like: Back plate 24 has a vertical top flange 28;
.Side plates 16, (6 are formed at their top. ends: with forwardly-directed vertical lugs 29. Hinged at 30, 30 to said lugs is a rectangular pan member 3 ( which may be rotated to a horizontal position resting on the. flange 28, disposed rearwardly adjacent the rear end of the ironing board, as shown in Figure 1. In this position, the pan member 3 ( may be utilized as a support for a flat iron. The pan member 3( may be also rotated to an inverted inoperative position overlying the rear end of the ironing board, as shown in full line view in Figure 2.
Designated at 32, 32 are respective vertical side arms pivotally connected at their lower portions to the lower rear portions of the side plates 16 16: by a transverse shaft 33, the arms 32; 32 being rigidly keyed to and secured to the ends of shaft 33 by machine screws 34 and washers 35, as shown m Figure 4, and the shaft 33 being rotatable in the side plates 16, 16. member .31, whereby the appliance cord 57 is coiled up by the cord spring 58 and« swing to vertical positions because of the biasing torque exerted on shaft 33 by the springs ,
The rotational movement of side arms 32, 32 to positions wherein the rollers 38 engage> in the detent portions 51 is cushioned by the tensions of spring coils 42, 42, preventing shock and rebound bf the side arms. .
The channel member 22 is provided with a front cover member 59 formed with vertical lower corner notches 60 through which the arms 41 pass. Cover member 59 has apertured top and bottom flanges 61 and 62, the top and Dottom wall portions of the channel member 22 be ng formed with indentations 63 lockmgly engaging the apertures in the flanges 61 and 62.
When the ironing board is to be folded for storage, pan member 31 is swung to the inverte , position of Figure 2 overlying the rear end of the ironing board, and the rods 45, 45 are swung downwardly to horizontal Positions adjacent the board, as shown in Figure 2. The iOllers38are engaged in the detent portions 56 and leleasably lock the rods 45, 45 in said horizontal positions. When the frame i 4 is folded up against the board, the entire assembly may be stored in an ^standing position resting on the resilient pad 27 of the attachment 15. _ ,
In the embodiment of Figures 7 to 10 a trans verse channel 101 is secured to the ends of the rotatable side arms, shown at 32', and secure to the ends of said channel are the tubulai rods 45 The respective wire cords 50 50 extendirom a terminal strip 102 secured in the channel 101, through the rods 45 to a forwardly facing female receptacle 46', whereby the iron plug may be inserted in said receptacle from the forwardside thereof, as shown in dotted view in Figure . The channel 101 is provided with a top cover 103. ' As shown in Figure 8, the springs 39 of Figure may be replaced by shorter springs 39 . An additional inner spring 140' may be employe within spring 40', as shown in Figure 8, the loop 142' of said inner spring being located ahead oi the loop of spring 40', with respect to the stud 43'. This provides increasing steps oi biasing force on shaft 33 when said shaft is rotated to bring stud 43' successively into engagement with loop 142' and then into engagement with the loop of spring 40'.
The side plates, shown at 16', are suitably cut away to provide clearance for the channel 101 when the rods 45 are swung to the horizontal position shown in full line view in Figure 7.
Although a specific embodiment of a combination collapsible flatiron rest and ironing cord receptacle device has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
