Claims. ( 1 ' .

This invention relates to continuously attached envelopes and has particular reference to a series of envelopes which are connected together in strip formation to permit of the convenient feeding of the strip through a typewriter or addresso- ; graph for addressing the envelopes.

An object of the invention is to provide a series of continuously attached envelopes in which adjacent envelopes are integrally connected togethei’ by narrow tabs located adjacent the opposite ends I thereof and which narrow tabs may be readily severed for separating the envelopes.

Another object of the invention is to provide a series of continuously attached envelopes in which the front and rear walls of each envelope are I integrally connected together at one end of the envelope and in which one of the said walls is formed with side flaps adhesively joining the front and rear walls together at the opposite side edges thereof. 2

Still another object of the invention is to provide a series of continuously attached envelopes which are so constructed and arranged that the same may be economically produced from a single sheet or length of paper without waste in forming 2 the envelopes.

Still another object of the invention is to provide two connected series of continuously attached envelopes arranged in side by side parallel relation with the envelopes in one series connected 3 with the envelopes in the other series by weakened lines to permit of the convenient separation thereof after the envelopes are addressed.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following speciflca- 3 tion and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the envelopes 10 in Continuously attached formation are produced from an elongated strip of paper which is of any desired width arid of continuous formation to provide any desired depth and width of envelope and any desired number thereof in attached formation. The envelopes 10 are so constructed and arranged that a single series or two series of continuously attached envelopes may be produced from a single 5 strip of paper. The envelopes in a single series or in connected series are adapted to be disposed in stacked formation for continuously feeding the same through a typewriter or addressograph for addressing the envelopes.

In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawings, a strip of paper I I is illustrated which is provided with lines-adapted to show the manner in which a single series of envelopes 10 are produced therefrom in accordance with the invention. The strip 5 H is cut away in rectangular formation as at 12 at longitudinal equally spaced locations forming oppositely disposed transversely extending edges 13 and 14. At the opposite ends of the cut away portions 12, narrow tabs 15 and 16 are provided 0 which form connections joining adjacent envelopes 10. The narrow tabs 15 are located along a longitudinally extending line 17 while the narrow tabs 16 are located along the side edge 18. Between the longitudinally extending line 17 and 5 a longitudinally extending line 1.9 the strip is transversely slit at longitudinal equally spaced locations as at 21 so as to form oppositely disposedrectangular shaped side flaps 22 and 23 which are folded on the transversely extending 0 lines 24 and 25.

' The strip 11 is folded on the longitudinally extending line 17 to provide the front walls 26 of the envelopes and the rear walls 27 thereof which are disposed in overlying relation with the front 5 walls 26. The side flaps 22 and 23 at the opposite edges of the front wall 26 of each Of the envelopes are folded into underlying relation with the rear wall· 27 thereof and adhesively secured thereto to form a pocket between the front and rear walls. 0 The tabs 15 may be provided with weakened or perforated lines 28 and 29 while the tabs 16 may be provided with weakened or perforated lines 33 and 31 to permit of convenient tearing of the tabs on said lines to separate the envelopes froin series •5 formation after the envelopes have been addressed.

The strip 11 is also cut away as at 32 at longitudinal spaced locations between the side flaps 22 and 23 and the side edge 33. This forms the closure flaps 34 which are folded on the longitudinally extending line 19 into overlying relation with the rear wall 27 for adhesively sealing the envelopes in closed relation.

In Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive of the drawings, a strip of paper 85 is Illustrated which .is provided with lines adapted to show the manner in which two series of continuously attached envelopes 10 are produced therefrom in accordance with the invention. The strip 35 is divided into parallel portions 36 and 37 by a longitudinally extending line 38 located medially between the opposite side edges 39 and 40 of the strip. The portions 36 and 37 of the strip are cut away in a rectangular formation as at 4i and 42 respectively at longitudinally spaced locations to form oppositely disposed transversely extending edges 43 and 44 extending inwardly from the side edges 39 and 40· of the strip portions 36 and 37 to narrow tabs 45 and 46 located along the longitudinally extending lines 47 and 48 respectively. The longitudinally extending line 47 is located medially between the side edge 39 and a longitudinally extending line 49 of the strip portion 36, while the line .4.8 is disposed medially between the side edge 40 and a longitudinally extending line 50 of the strip portion 37. The «narrow tabs 45 and 46 provide connections .joining adjacent envelopes 10 formed from the portions 36 and 37 of the strip. Narrow tabs 51 are also provided which are lopated in lateral alignment with the tabs 45 and 46 and disposed between the longitudinally extending lines 4.9 and 50.

The strip is transversely slit at longitudinally spaced locations as at 5.2 between the longitudinally extending lines 47 and 49 and as at S3 between «the longitudinally extending lines 48 and 5.0 so as to form oppositely disposed rectangular shaped side .«flaps 54 and 55 in the strip portion 36 and oppositely disposed rectangular shaped side flaps 56 and 57 in the strip portion 37 which are folded on the transversely extending lines 58 and 53 located in alignment with the transversely extending edge portions 43 and 44.

The strip portion 36 is folded on the longitudinally extending line 47 to provide the front walls of the envelopes and the rear walls 61 thereof which latter walls are disposed in overlying relation with the front walls. The side flaps 54 and 55 at the opposite edges of the front walls 60 are folded into underlying relation with the rear walls and adhesively secured thereto so as to form pockets between said walls. Hie strip portion 37 is similarly folded on the longitudinally extending fine 46 so as to form the front walls 62 of the envelopes and the rear walls 63 thereof, which latter walls are disposed in overlying relation with the front walls and have the side flaps 58 and 59 folded under «the rear walls and adhesively secured thereto to form the pockets between the front and rear walls of the envelopes. The tabs 45 and 46 may be provided with weakened or perforated lines 64 and 65 connecting adjacent envelopes, and the tabs 51 may be provided with weakened or perforated lines 66 and 67 which form the ends of the closure flaps 68 and 69 of the two series respectively when the envelopes are separated. The closure flaps 68 are folded on the fold line 46 while the closure flaps 69 are folded on the longitudinally extending line 50 and adhesively secured to the rear walls of the envelopes in the series respectively for sealing the same.

This provides two series of envelopes in which the series are connected together by the weakened or perforated longitudinally extending line 70 joining the flaps 68 and 69 and in which the envelopes in each series are connected together by narrow tabs which permit of the folding of the connected strips in stacked formation for continuously feeding the two series through a typewriter or addressograph so that the envelopes disposed in side by side relation in the series may be addressed and the next succeeding envelopes in each series moved into position in the typewriter or addressograph for addressing the same.

The rear walls 27 of the envelopes 10 in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawings are somewhat narrower than the front walls

This disposes the weakened lines 28 and 29 and SO and 31 inwardly of the side edges 24 and 25 of the front wall so that when the tabs 15 and 46 are severed along said weakened lines, the frayed edges are inwardly of the side edges of the envelope. In this form also the strip is slit along the longitudinally extending lines 17 and 19 to form the ends 20 at the flaps 22 and 23.
