_ Be it known that I, George E. Kirk, residing at the city of Washington, in tbe District of Columbia, have invented a Weather5 Proof Cover for Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is a weather-proof cover for padlocks, or’all of that class'of locks which implies a staple, with or,without a hasp, and io embraces the following peculiar features: a cap or openshell binging to a metal plate so slotted as to fit over a staple, either separately or behind a hasp,or when fastened ou its front, all of which are hereinafter more fully de15 scribed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, of which—

Figure 1 represents a front view of the cover, showing its cap closed over the padlock, 20 but with its top broken out to exhibit the slotted plate, with its attachments to the hasp underneath; Fig. 2, a longitudinal cross section of my device ; and Fig. 3, a front view of the same, showing the cap raised and the slot25 ted plate placed behind the hasp, which is^:a horizontal one instead of tlie perpendicular form shown in Figs. 1 aud 2.

In the drawings, A represents the said cap, which consists of a metallic back or top with 30 inclosing· sides or flanges and an open bottom, when in the general shape shown herewith, which shape is made to conform to that of the usual padlock, D.

A binges, and consists generally of a plate of 35 rolled metal, having a suitable slot, c, cut through it to fit over the usual loqk-staple E. This slotted plate may be attached, as shown, by any suitable means to the front of the hasp, when a perpendicular one is in use, for the 40 convenience of lifting both hasp and plate together when the padlock is removed, as, should the hasp be lifted with the said plate unattached, the plate would fall away. This last would-not happen in the case of ahofizolf- 45 tai hasp being used, as the plate B could then be put over the staple before the hasp, and would be likely to remain upou the staple after both padlock and liasp had, been displaced, and until the padlock could be replaced on the 50 staple, as a keeper of both the padlock and its attendant weather-proof cover.

Of course, when a hasp is not used at all, the slotted plate B can be placed over the staple, aiid the padlock will, whenever also 55 fastened upon it, always keep the said weather-proof cover in useful position.
