Claims.

This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in mattresses.

An object of this invention is to provide a plurality of mattress sections having means for detachably securing said sections in certain predetermined selected relative positions.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a resilient cushion means to be used in conjunction with the above mentioned securing means.

Another object of the present invention is to provide means for covering the resulting space between said mattress sections when the said mattress sections are held in certain predetermined spaced positions.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character described conducive of physical comfort, ventilation and other advantages.

Ancillary objects and features of novelty shall become apparent to those skilled in the art in following .the description of the preferred embodiment of the present invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first form of the present invention;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention disclosed in Figure 1 and showing added thereto cover means for the space resulting in certain selected locations of mattress sections ;

Figure 3 is an extended longitudinal sectional view of the invention disclosed in Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a second form of the present invention;

Figure 5 is an exploded perspective view of a third embodiment of the present invention;

Figure 6 is a schematic view showing obvious formulations of arrangement of segments of the present invention, and

Figure 7 is a perspective view of a cushion insert to be used in conjunction with any of the above mentioned embodiments.

Referring now in detail to the illustrated preferred embodiment of the present invention, like reference characters are used throughout to indicate similar elements thereof.

This invention has been provided to produce devices which produce means for effecting free movement of the shoulders and upper arms thereby enhancing comfort and the health of the individual in using the present invention.

Space between units of mattress sections is designed for hospital use in order to facilitate comfort of patients such as free movement of

1947, Serial No. 743,494 (CI. 5—91) ' 2 limbs, in order to accommodate plaster casts, splints, and to provide means for receiving drainage tubes in various positions of the body. Further, ventilation of certain portions of the body 5 may be provided and utilized in certain predetermined positions pressure on wounds may be avoided. The use of the present invention further makes reclining or declining of beds extremely simple affording a more natural posture 10 for the patient.

When the invention is utilized for physical culture purposes as well as athletic use in rubdowns, the invention allows an athlete’s body or limbs to be in comfortable positions, relaxing 15 muscles and preventing stoppage of blood circulation.

It is also within the purview of the present invention to provide either single or double bed mattress by arrangement of segments, merely 20 by the proper selection of said arrangement.

Taking now Figure 1 there is provided a mattress segment 10 of the usual conventional internal structure and appearance. A strip of material 12 is provided at a selected edge of 25 said mattress segment 10. It is noted at this point that the strip 12 is detachably secured to the said selected edge of the mattress by a’suitable fastening means, in this instance a slide fastener 14. A second section 16 of any suitable 30 shape or size is removably secured to the opposite edge of the said strip 12. The same type of fastener, slide fastener 14, may be utilized in holding the section 16 to the said strip 12. It will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 1 35 that the said mattress sections 10 and 16 maybe selectively and slidably moved relative to each other restricted only by the width of the said member 12.

It is noted at this point that a resilient cushion 18, preferably of sponge rubber or the like is provided for the purpose of seating in the sling or strip 12. By utility of this expedient a level or substantially level surface is provided on the upper portion of the mattress. Of course, if the resulting aperture or break is desired between the segments 10 and l6, the cushion 18 is simply not used.

It will be noted that a plurality of fastening means, preferably buttons 20 are provided about the edge of the said mattress segments 10 and

16. Cover strips 22 and 24 respectively are provided for the purpose of being removably secured to the said mattress segments 10 and 16. The covers 22 and 24 have complemental securing means or snap fasteners along the longitudinal

2,550,293 edges thereof which are complemental to the above mentioned buttons 20. The last mentioned covers 22 and 24 may be selectively utilized in accordance with the prerogative of the user of the invention.

Referring now to Figure 4 sections 10 and 16 are provided of any suitable configuration and the sling or connecting strip 26 is provided therebetween. In this instance, the securing means are simple buttons 28 provided along the edge of the said sections 10 and 16 and buttonholes complemental to the said buttons provided in the said sling 26. This differentiating fea-ture is the only departure from the above described first embodiment of the present invention.

A third embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in Figure 5. The usual illustrative mattress sections 10 and 16 are provided for use. in conjunction with this embodiment. The differentiating feature of this invention over the previously described embodiments resides in the securing· means for the sling 30. In this instance, a resilient clamp member 31 is provided in-a longitudinal slot along selected edges of the said mattress sections 10 and 16. This clip may be made of any suitable material such as plastic, light metal, certain impregnated fabrics and the like. The sling 30 has inturned marginal folds and rods 32 extending theredown. These marginal folds and the rods 32 are removably received in the said clips 31. Of course, the cushion member 18 may be utilized in this embodiment as well as the previously described embodiments of the present invention.

Referring to Figure 6 there is disclosed variously configured mattress sections 34 and 36. Just a few of the many variations or rearrangements- of mattress sections are disclosed in the said Figure 6. Of course, the particular need of the user of the invention must be taken into consideration in deciding which arrangement of mattress sections is most advantageous and desirable.

There has been described and illustrated but a few of the preferred embodiments of the present invention. However, it is apparent that varia4 tions as to size, shape may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
