To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Robert W. Teese, of Parker’s Landing, iu the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a 5 new aud Improved Safe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to protect the lock of a safe from being picked or blown open.

The invention consists in a safe having an io open-bottom compartment at its key-hole, end; and it also consists -in the combination, with a compartment having a hinged cover, of an open bottom compartment at the key-hole of the said compartment.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, iu which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The box A, which is to be made of iron, steel, or some othersuitablemetal about threefourths to one inch in thickness, is bolted to 25 the wall of a room by means of the screw-bolts B, the uuts C being on the inside of the box, so that this box cannot be removed without opening it to unscrew the nuts 0. The box has a hinged or pivoted cover or door, D, in its 30 upper side, the hinges or pivots of this door being at one end of the box, the swinging end of this door reaching to a transverse partition, E, which forms a compartment, F, large enough to receive a person’s hand at that end of the 35 box opposite io the one at which the cover or door D is hinged or pivoted. The compartment F is closed on top and open below. The door or cover D is provided on its upper side with a knob, H, and on its under side with a 40 staple, J, fitting in a lock, K, attached to the partition E on the side toward that part of the box closed by the cover or door D, and forming the compartment L for receiving the valuables. The partition E is provided with a 45 key-hole, M, through which the key N is passed into the lock, the body of the key projecting into the compartment F, as shown.

An alarm apparatus,?, either mechanical or electrical, is contained in the compartment L, and is connected by a wire, O, with the door 50 or cover D, so that the alarm will be sounded when the cover or door is opened.

The compartment F must only be of sufficient size to admit the band, but no larger. The hand is passed into the compartment F, 5? the key n is inserted in the key-hole, and the door or cover D is unlocked, and the valuables are placed into the compartment L, the alarm P is adjusted, and the door D is closed and locked, upon which the key π is withdrawn. 60

The lock K cannot be picked, as the compartment F is too small to admit tools, and a person cannot see the lock from the compartment F even if it would be possible to pass the tools into the compartment F. The lock cau- 65 not be blown open, as no explosives can be introduced unless a hole is drilled through the cover or door D. The lock can be of any desired construction, and the alarm apparatus P can be dispensed with, if desired. In all cases 70 the top of the compartment F must be closed, the bottom open, and the lock K must be at the upper edge of the partition E.
