To all whom it may concern:

_ Be it known that I, Herman Pistorius, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of 5 Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which io it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in 15 invalid-beds; and it consists in the combinations of parts hereinafter described,whereby a bed is provided with an adjustable table so arranged as to be easily reached by the occupant of the bed, and with arm and leg sup20 ports, and cords or suspensories, by means of which the patient may be supported and permitted to raise himself and change his position.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a bed provided with my in25 vention. Fig. 2 is a view of the device detached from the bed and partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a view of the underside of the table.

A represents a metallic rod or standard, provided at its lower end with a clamp, a, and at 30 its upper end with an arm, B, the latter extending across the bed. To this arm is adjustably secured by means of a clamp, x, a rod, C, the lower end of which is connected to the bail e of a table orbracket, D, the latter being pref35 erably provided with a rim or flange, d. The arm B is also provided with one or more clamps or rings, &, to which are attached by means of hooks z ropes or cords V, the latter having handles c on their lower ends, by means of which 4° the patient may raise himself aud change his position without assistance.

The rod C is adjustable both laterally and vertically on the arm B, and the table may therefore be adjusted at pleasure, and the en45 tire device may be removed from the bed,when not desired for use, by simply loosening the clamp a.

As represented in Figs. 2 and 3, the table D may be turned over by loosening the thumb50 screws 0, and the under side of the table may be provided with a spring-clip, P, for holding paper, and a countersink or opening, Q, to receive an inkstand.

E E represent slotted metallic rods or supports, held adj ustably u pon the arm B by thumb- 5 5 screws l>', aud provided on their under sides with any convenient number of hooks, f, from which are suspended cords g, the latter supporting arm and leg rests F.” The rods E E are each formed with a slot, i, extending nearly 60 throughout the length of the rods, and the latter may therefore Readjusted as desired upon the arm B, or turned parallel therewith when not in use, as shown in Fig. 2.

When the arm and leg supports F are not 65 desired for use the cords g are unhooked, the supports removed, and the rod E may then be turned around parallel with the arm B, as above described.

When the arm and leg rests are in use, and 70 in some instances where they are not in use, it will be found desirable to firmly brace the arm B, and for this purpose I have provided a combined clamp and bracket, G, constructed to fit over the end of the arm B and be held there- 75 on by a thumb-screw, Z.

The perforated depending lugs h' of the device constitute brackets for supporting the upper ends of two braces, H. The latter are provided at their lower ends with prongs I to 80 fit onto the side rail of a bed, while the upper ends, J, of said brace cross each other, and are formed with a series of perforations, / to permitof different adjustmentsofthebraces, which are held in place between the lugs h' by apin,7i². 85

I do not limit myself to any particular construction of the several parts of my improvement; but in Fig.. 2 I have represented the standard A as formed of a post, M, to which the clamp a is secured, and a tube, N, formed 90 in the same piece with or secured to the arm. B and fitting over said post.

The advantage of this construction is that when the braces H are not used the arm B may be turned to one side out of the way, the 95 tube portion N revolving on the post M. However, any other form of standard may be employed.
