To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Charles Bates, of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Im5 provement in Plows, of which the following is < a specification.

This invention relates to breaking-plows; and it consists in theconstruction andarrangement by which the apparatus will form an adlo justable gang of two similar breaking-plows without supporting-wheels, and which can be made to act as a snbsoiler as well as a single plow.

U In my drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my plow. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing a modification of the adjusting device.

Similar reference-letters indicate like parts in all of the figures.

Referring to drawings, A is the plow-beam. . B B^z are the plows, and C the handles of the ^f plow.

To one side of the beam A is attached a second beam, E. Between the two beams A and . 25 E is a block, F, which separates the two ' beams, which are secured together by bolts or ,.- rivets F' F. The beam E bears a plow, B^z, to cut a second furrow. The back end of beam E is attached to and held at a proper distance 30 from beam A by part H between them.

The plow B^z is set a proper distance forward of the plow B to avoid interference with its furrow. Thus, as shown, the two plows throw ₍ similar furrows and help to hold each other up 35 properly withoiitrequiring wheels, as is usually the case with gang-plow.s.

- The plows are guided’ by handles C G, or otherwise. The standards of the plows B B^zare attached to beams A E, so that the plows * 40 may be raised or lowered in relation to their beams and fixed at any required height. The r^- back end of beam A and the handles at I are also correspondingly adjustable.

The standards K K^z are graduated with hori45 zontal lines to form scales or gages for set_t ting the plows at the desired height for their work. Loops or bands c, secured to the beams, on the outsides, serve to clasp the standards, and headed clamping-bolts 4 5 serve to hold 50 said standards at given heights.

From the standards K K^z extend arms L L^z, U which, when clasped to the beams by suitable ft , clamping-bolts, serveto form braces to hold the ' plows rigidly to their places when at work. 55 The upright parts of the arms or braces L L^z are provided with long slots a'a, to allow of a free movement of said arms under the heads of the clamping-bolts which secure them. The slots a a are provided with rabbet-counter- ‘ sinks to receive the heads of the clamping- 60 bolts, which are held against turning when clamped by nuts on the opposite sides of the arms L L^z.

To the forward end of the plow-beam E is a rod or bent bar, b, which extends to one side 65 and downward to bear down the grass and weeds in front of the plows, so that when the furrow is turned they may be well covered.

In Fig. 3 I show a modified form of standard, in which thearms, extendingto either side, 7'0 are fixed rigidly to the plow-beams, while the standard proper passes through a loop between the said arms, and, extending upward, is clamped to the loops secured to the said beam. In this modification clamping-bolts 75 may be used also at the point of intersection between the standards proper aud the arms extending therefrom.

In subsoiling the plow B must be raised or the one B^z must be lowered the distance re- 80. quired between the top and bottom furrows, and the draft-clevis changed from a place between the beams to one before the plow B, so that the plow B^z will run in the furrow made by the plow B on the previous passage and 85 throw a furrow from its bottom,- while plow B cuts a new furrow to be subsoiled at the next passage.

The beam E and plow B^z may be removed if required, leaving only a simple single plow. 90
