This invention relates, to a combination sofa and bed, and particularly-to a sofa or couch with a back rest therefor which is readily displaceable to provide a substantially full sized bed, This application is a continuation in part of my ap- g plication Serial No. 606,346, filed July 21, 1945.

It is the Object of this invention to provide a conventionally appearing couch with a hingedly mounted back rest adapted to be tilted upwardly and backwardly into a displaced elevated posi- 10 tion to provide a substantially full sized bed.

It is. the further object of this invention to provide, means in conjunction with said couch for supporting said back rest in couch as well as bed position. 15

It is the further object of this invention to provide a -pair of irregularly shaped supporting blocks upon the inner walls of the couch arms which are adapted to support the back top arid back rest in couch position, and which are adapt- 20 ed to.support the back rest in elevated converted bed position.

These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing in which: 25

It wifi be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferable embodiment of the invention, and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims here- 35 after set out.

Referring to the drawing, the couch consists of an upright back portion II with a pair of spaced side arms &lt;2 and 13 secured at the ends thereof and extending therefrom. 40

An inner· spring mattress or other resilient support 14 is provided between arms 12 and 13 supported upon longitudinal slats 15 or ledges carried upon the inner walls of arms 12 and 13, and adapted for sliding adjustment thereon. 45

Resilient or stuffed padding 16 rests upon the top of mattress 14 providing. a finished couch seat as shown in Fig. 1, and an approximately full sized bed as illustrated in Fig. 2.

The back rest 17 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 50 is angularly supported at its ends upon the inclined edges 18 f orming a part of the two spaced blocks, 19 which are secured by screws 20 to -the opposite inner ends of arms 12 and 13.

Back rest 17 consists of a rectangular.frame- 55 work 21 over which is provided covering 22 with resilient padding 23 interposed.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a back top portion is pivotally secured adjacent its longitudinal edge to the top of back portion 11 by a plurality Of inter-connecting hinges'25; or by a single continuous piano hinge if desired.

A back top 24, with upholstered covering 2.2, supported rearwardly by hinges 25 upon the top edge, of back 11, is further supported forwardly at its opposite ends upon fiat top. surfaces 1.9' forming part of blocks 19. Said back top is also pivotally joined along its forward longitudinal edge by piano hinges 27 to the corresponding upper longitudinal edge of back rest 17 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Thus when used as a couch, a. back top 24 is horizontal and back rest 17 hinged thereto is angularly inclined bearing against edges 18 of blocks 19 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

To convert said couch into a bed, back rest 17 is lifted riding upon forward edges 18 of blocks 1.9 'and brought backwardly and down with its bottom edge 28 riding along and supported upon the arcuate portions 29 of blocks 19.

As illustrated .in Fig. 2, and in dotted lines in Fig. 1, back top 24 hinged to back II has now assumed a substantially vertical position, while back rest 17 hingedly secured thereto, has assumed a substantially vertical position upon the top arcuate edges 29 of blocks 19. As shown in Fig. 2, practically a complete clearance of bed pad 16 is effected for attaining the maximum bed width.

Referring to Fig· 1, a storage compartment 30 for pillows, linens and blankets is provided between members 11, 17 and 24, when the combination couch and bed is used as a couch.

It will be noted that members 14 and I® rest upon guide rails 15 on arms 12 and 13 and may be removed easily merely by sliding outwardly upon said rails.

It will be noted that blocks 19 perform at least' three important functions, i. e., portions 18 provide an angular support upon which back rest 17 -bears against when in couch position. At the same time, flat Projecting portions 19' act as a front horizontal support for back top 24. Furthermore, it is seen that back rest 17 is further supported inasmuch as it is joined to back top 24 by hinge 27. Lastly, arcuate downwardly and rearwardly extending ledges 29 forming part of block 19, not only act as a guide in positioning back rest 17 in its elevated position, but also act as a positive support for said back rest in its final substantially vertical position, whereby it is impossible for said support to fall once elevated.

Referring again to Figures 1 and 2, it will be seen that a spacey 3 i is interposed hetween and secured at its ends to side arms 12 and 13. While

2,894,939 the top surface of spacer 31 lies in the same horizontal plane as the top surfaces of guide rails 15, it is understood that said rails provide the actual support for the inner spring and mattress members 14 and 16. Said guide rails are 5 in themselves sufficient to adequately support members (4 and 16.

Having described my invention, reference should now be had to the claims which follow for determining the scope thereof. 10
