My present invention relates generally to a nether garment and more particularly to that type known as slacks.

Slacks are generally characterized fey a relatively rapid narrowing upwardly from the hjps to 5 leave a top opening which is relatively restricted to closely engage about the relatively narrow portion of the body immediately above the hip. Such garment requires some arrangement or provision whereby this opening can be enlarged or 10 expanded so that the garment can be passed over the hips.

One of the general objects of my invention: is an improved arrangement whereby the open top may be opened or enlarged sufficiently to pass the 15 garment top over the hips of the wearer and more particularly the attainment of this object without employing either a front or side opening and the means required for closing such opening.

Another object of my invention is a novel. ar- ²⁰rangement for engaging about the waist of .the wearer to support the garment therefrom and more particularly of such an arrangement wherein the garment may be supported preliminary and prior to the closing of the waist-band. 85

Another object of my invention is the provision of pockets so related and devised that the aforementioned preliminary waist-engagement is effected thereby.

Another object of my invention is the provision of an arrangement for normally holding the pockets fully extended.

Another object of my invention is the provision of pockets to which access may be had more readily.

The general object of my invention is the provision of a new simplified and improved garment of the character referred to whose appearance is enhanced and wherein a front opening is entirely eliminated and garment retention and re-. 43 lease effected in a novel manner and wherein the pockets are normally maintained fully extended and are more readily accessible.

For the attainment of these objects and such ether objects as may hereinafter appear or.be · pointed out, I have illustrated one: embodiment of my invention in the drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective showing my garment on a wearer;

Figure 2 is an enlarged front view of the upper 3 or waist-embracing portion of the garment with the front dropped to expose to view the underlying parts;

Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on line

Figure 4 shows the upper pr waist and hip-engaging portion of the garment, with the front only partially released; and

Figure 5 is a perspective of the right-hand pocket of Figures 1 and 3 as it appears before assembled into the garment.

The garment illustrated is of the trouser type having legs 10 and II which may be entirely conventional,

Before describing my invention I will premise that: the invention resides in the manner of constructing that portion of the front of a nether garment which extends from the hips to the waist-line; the invention ha_s been illustrated as embodied in a trouser garment of the slacks type. A characteristic .about which my invention revolves is the fact that the portion of the garment beginning with the hip narrows upwardly to a restricted opening which engages about the waist-line of the wearer and fits the body from that line down to: the hips; garments of this type require some arrangement whereby this restricted opening at the waist-line can be expanded or opened so that the garment can be passed freely over the wider hip portions of the wearer.

Referring now to the figures of the drawing, it will be observed that the garment is shown as comprised of a back and a front and following the conventional practice the back is formed of two halves IB and 19 which are joined by a rear seam 20 which runs from the waist-line centrally of the back downwardly along the back around the crotch and upwardly along the front half as is conventional of garments of the trouser type. The legs 10 and II are closed on the inside by the inseams (not shown) and on the outside by the side seams 30—30 which terminate at points 22 and 23 respectively. These terminal points may be about at the level of the hips of the wearer but above the garment .crotch.

The garment back is provided with a waistband section 2 ί which is extended .at both ends or sides partway around the front as shown at 25 and 26 in Figure 2. These extensions terminate short of each other so that their innermost edges 21 and 28 are in spaced apart relation about as shown in said figure. The purpose and reason for this arrangement will shortly appear.

The garment front is cut away at its sides beginning at the aforementioned points 22 and to leave the curved side edges IS and 16 which converge toward the waist-line and narrow the upper portion of the front as clearly shown in

Figures 1 and 2. As a result this narrowed upper

3,385,178 portion of the front which is above the line connecting points 22 and 23, is free of attachment or support and may take a position such as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. This narrowed upper portion of the garment front member is provided at its top edge with a waist-band section 35 which is shown in the various figures as of a length slightly greatly than the space which separates the waist-band extensions 25 and 2G and as so positioned that when the front is closed (see Figure 1) in the'manner shortly to be pointed out, the waist-band section 35 will slightly overlap both extensions 25 and 26. These overlapping; waist-band portions 25, 26 and 35 are provided , with inter-engaging elements whereby the waistband section 35 may be releasably secured to the ends of the waist-band sections 25 and 26 respectively to thereby complete the waist-band structure. In the drawing, these releasable securing means are shown as comprising two sets of buttons 40 and 41 and two sets of cooperating butron-holes 42 and43.

Among the stated objects of my invention is a novel arrangement for¹ supporting the garment from the waist of the wearer and more particularly for doing so preliminary to and to facilitate the assembly of the waist-band sections to complete the waist-band structure. This arrangement comprises pockets so devised and related so as to permit of the attainments of such objects. I will now describe this arrangement first, by reference to Figure 5, wherein a fabric section (preferably of the same' material as that of which the garment is made)' cut to proper shape and size, is doubled over around line 45, and the curved edges at the bottom of the halves, joined by seam 46. Figure 5 shows the pocket before assembly with the garment and as having the free edges 50, 51, 52, and 53. The side edge 50 is cut to the curvature of the edge 15 at the side of the upper part of the garment front and is secured thereto in any preferred or desired manner as by seaming. The other free side edge 51 is secured to the side edge of the right half 19 of the back from the point 23, upwardly to the waist-band extension 26, to thus complete the side seam of the trousersat the right. - . ..

The top edge 53.is secured to the bottom of the waist-band section 26 and upon reference to Figures 2 and 4, it will be observed that this attachment terminates short of the extreme, free end or edge 28 of the member 26 and that it is only a small part of the length of the top edge that is so secured. As a result the. pocket when fully extended will reach to and slightly beyond the central point of the front. As a further result of this arrangement the outer portion of .the waist-band extension 26 is free of attachment to the upper edge of. the pocket which facilitates the assembly of the waist-band sections as will be pointed out..

The pocket at the left may in all respects, duplicate the pocket shown in Figure. 5,. and is shown with its corresponding edges 50, 51 and 53 secured to the back member, the front member and with the waist-band section 25 in the same manner as set forth above, of the pocket on the right. ..... - .

A feature of my invention is that the pockets are of a width.at. the top so that when fully extended their innermost upper corner portions overlap and the provision of means for releasably securing these overlapping inner portions of the pockets to each.other in any preferred or desired manner as by a button 70 (see Figure 5) on the overlap of one pocket which engages wtih a button-hole in the overlap of the other pocket. The pockets are thus maintained in the extended relationship shown in Figure 2. In this relation the pockets complete the embracement around the waist of the wearer and support the garment therefrom before and without requiring that the front be raised from its pendant position of Figure 2 and secured in its elevated position of Figure 1 by means such as that shown at 49, 4 ί, 42, and 43. This facilitates the closing of the front of the garment. In addition, it provides a brace underlying the garment from which gives the garment front the effect of flatness which is so-highly desired. This arrangement serves also to maintain the pockets fully extended and gives the benefits which flow therefrom. The assembly of the waist-band section 35 with the waistband sections 25 and 26 is also facilitated by the fact that the terminal end portions of the latter are free of attachment and can shift for facilitating the assembly of'these waist-band sections)

I thus attain a garment which dispenses with an opening at the front or sides of the garment and whose appearance, is enhanced-at the waistline. I also attain an improved: pocket construction to which access can be mor e-r eadily had by a downward movement of the hands through the relatively wide opening left at'the top'by. the curved edges 15 and 16 as contra-distinguished from the conventional pockets wherein access is had through the sides. In addition I attain, by means of my pocket arrangement, what is in effect a brace around the waist which supports the garment while the⁷ front is being closed and thereafter acts to flatten the front of the wearer at the waist-line. -
