Claim.

My invention relates to a case for holding lipstick, said case so constructed as to make the lipstick available for application by the user.

Among the objects of my invention is to create a simplified construction for the projection and retraction of a lipstick with relation to a case. To provide a construction which will project a lipstick so that the same may be applied by the user free from any obstructing mechanism adjacent the projected lipstick and such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.

While I have shown in the accompanying drawing preferred embodiments of my invention, yet I wish it understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is an elevational view of my lipstick device in closed position; Fig. 2 is an elevational view of my lipstick device open for use; Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 2.

The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a hollow body member 10 having side walls 11, a closed bottom 12 and an open top 13. A spring 14 is positioned within said body member 10, with the bottom portion of the spring 14 engaging the interior of the closed bottom 12. The upper portion of said spring 14 engages the bottom of a holder or cup 15. The cup 15 is slightly smaller in its dimensions than the hollow interior of the body member 10, so as to permit vertical movement with respect thereto. Said cup 15 is adapted to hold a lipstick 16 or the like.

A cap or closure 11 for the open top 13 is provided, said cap adapted to be removably positioned by friction grip within depression 18 on the side walls II adjacent their upper ends.

A cord 19 is attached at or adjacent to its upper end to said cup 15 and extends downwardly through spring 14 and opening 20 in bottom 12, thence to cap 11 to which it is attached at or adjacent to its upper end.

In my preferred form cord 19 has a knot 21 positioned in cup 15 and of a larger size than opening 22 in cup 15 through which cord 19 below knot 21 passes. Cord 19 may also have a knot 25 positioned in cap 11 beyond opening 23 therein.

When the device is in closed position, with cap 11 covering the open top 13, cord 19 extends horizontally across the balance of the cap 11 to (Cl. 206—56) one of the side walls 11 and then vertically along said side walls to the outside of bottom 12 where it extends horizontally until it enters opening 20 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

In use after the user rerhoves cap 11 from open top 13, spring 14 exerts upward pressure on the bottom of cup 15 and projects lipstick 16 above the open top 13, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. In this position the lipstick 16 is free from any 10 obstruction by the cap 11 and may be used without interference. It will be noted that when the cap 11 is removed and released by the user that it will fall by gravity and the force of spring 14 away from any contact with open top 13 and 15 the exposed lipstick 16. There are no complicated attachments or hinges between the cap 11 and the body member 10 adjacent the open top 13. The cap 11 being attached to the cord 19 is, of course, not lost when released by the user, but 20 falls out of the way of the open top. The cap can be easily grasped at any time thereafter by the user for closing the device.

After use of the lipstick the user in moving the cap 11 to be placed on the open top 13 in 25 closed position pulls the cord 19 so that the cup 15 is forced against the action of the spring 14 back into the interior of the body member 10.

A decorative ball 24 is attached to cord 19 at such a place on the cord that when the device 30 is in open position, the ball being of larger diameter than opening 20 cannot enter therethrough and bears against the exterior of bottom 12 and stops, further movement of the cord. This prevents spring 14 from ejecting cup 15 35 beyond the point desirable for a proper exposure of lipstick 16. It is also within the contemplation of my invention that other stopping means may be employed.
