BASKET LINING

Claim.

This invention relates to basket linings and more particularly to a lining for a baby basket having ornamental features in conjunction with a cover for the edges and interior of a basket 5 on which the lining is mounted.

The principal objects of the present invention are to provide an ornamental lining for a baby basket; to provide a cover for the corners of the basket and inner body portion thereof for exten10 sion substantially over the bottom of the basket to protect a baby in the basket from contact with the rough edges thereof; to provide ties in conjunction with the lining for securing the lining to the basket; and to provide elastic means 15 in conjunction with portions of the ties for maintaining the shape of the lining relative to the basket.

In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved 2Q details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring more in detail to the drawing:

I designates a basket preferably of conventional shape having the usual bottom 2 and rim 35 portion 3, the rim portion having a slightly larger perimeter than the bottom and being joined thereto by a wicker body portion 4 suitably curved to coincide with the bottom portion of the basket. generally designates a lining for the basket which consists of a suitable fabric blank of generally rectangular shape having end edges 14 which are joined, as shown at i5 in Fig. 1, to 50 shape the blank to the general contour of the interior of the basket. The lining may be colored to suit the taste of an individual employing the lining. The blank 13 is folded upon itself longitudinally substantially midway the ¢5 length thereof, as at 16, and is provided with (CI. 5—93) double stitches 17 and 18 in spaced relation to the fold 16 to provide an encasement for a tie member 19. The lower end of the blank is hemmed, as at 20, Figs. 1 and 3, to provide an encasement for a tie member 21 similar to the ₅tie member 19. The opposite side edge of the blank is folded upon itself, as at 22, arid provided with double stitches 23 and 24 in spaced relation to the end thereof to provide an encasement for a tie member 25 for extension along the Ion- iq gitudinal side edges of the basket when the lining is in position thereon, as shown in Fig. 1.

In order to provide for placing the lining on the basket, the sides of the blank are slit, as shown at 26, and sewed, as at 27, to reinforce 15 the same in such a manner that they provide splits in the fabric for fitting over the pins 10 on the basket between the basket rim portion and the handles.

' The edges of the curved ends of the lining are ₂q provided with fastening devices, for example, the tie members 28 which are suitably fixed thereto at the split edges of the lining in substantial alignment with the tie members 25, it being obvious, however, that snaps, buttons, “zippers,” or ₂s the like, may be provided to secure the edges of the slits together. Elastic members 29 are also provided which are mounted in a continuation of the encasement formed by the stitches 23, 24, that is in substantially contiguous relation to the ₃₀tie members 28. The elastic members are of ^ΰslightly less length than the distance around the curved ends of the basket and lining so that the material will be gathered in shirrs when the lining is placed in the basket to enhance the ap- ₃₅pearance of the lined basket. The tie members 28 provided at the edges of the slit 26 are adapted to be suitably united with the tie members 25, preferably in the form of the bows 30, to secure the lining on the basket. .

In using a lining constructed as described, the ⁴main body portion of the lining, the ends of which having been sewed together, is placed in the interior of the basket on the bottom thereof, while the outer portions of the lining are laid 45 over the edge of the rim, fitting between the handle portions and the rim of the basket by reason of the slits fitting over the pivot pins for the handle members and the elastic portions drawing the lining close to the outer body portion 50 of the basket. The tie members 25 and 28 are then united in bows under such pivot points for securing the lining in position. It is apparent that the outer fold 22 forms a valance on the outer portion of the basket and the fold 16 forms 55

2,235,293 a valance on the upper inner portion of the basket to thus ornamentally cover the basket and protect a baby in the basket from any rough edges of the basket. The ends of the continuous a tie member 19 at the juncture of the lining edges are then suitably united for securing the central portion of the lining about the upper inner periphery of the basket. The ends of the tie member 21 are then secured together to draw the 10 lower body portion of the lining toward the center of the bottom of the basket to partially cover the bottom portion of the basket.
