WINDOW SASH FASTENER
Chester O, Sanborn, Everett, Mass., assignor to Charles Rschenburg, Everetjt, Mass.
Application June 5, 1939, Serial No. 277,356
Claim. (Cl. 292—251)
This invention relates to a window sash fastener, and has for· its object to provide a device of simple, inexpensive, rugged construction which may be easily and quickly applied to the upper and lower sashes of a window for the purpose of locking said sashes together and thereby preventing both of said sashes from being opened by unauthorized persons.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastening device which presents a neat appearance from the interior, is substantially invisible from the exterior, and which will hold adjacent portions of the upper and lower sashes clamped tightly together to provide a weather tight joint and to prevent rattling when said sashes are in their locked position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an easily manipulated locking member mounted in the lower window sash and which is yieldingly held out of the path of movement of the upper sash when the device is in its unlocked position.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel means whereby a face plate for the fastener is secured to the barrel member thereof.
The invention consists of a window sash fastener as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawing:
Mg. 1 is a vertical section through adjacent portions of upper and lower window sashes illustrating said sashes locked together by the fastener of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Mg. 1 illustrating the fastener in its unlocked position.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the fastener and adjacent portions of the window to which it is secured.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the drawing, S represents the lower portion of an upper window sash, and 6 represents the upper portion of a lower window sash, both of well known construction and abutting together face to face at 7. Seated in a recess 8 provided in the upper sash 5 is a thimble 9 having a screw threaded periphery 19 by means of which it is firmly seemed in said sash. The thimble 9 is also provided with an internally screw threaded recess I1. Mounted in the lower sash 6 in axial alignment with the thimble 9 is a cylindrical barrel member 12 having an intermediate .bearing portion 13 provided therein in which a locking member 14 is mounted to slide lengthwise of said barrel. The locking member is screw threaded at one end thereof at IS to interlock with the screw threaded recess 11 of the thimble 9, and in the unlocked position of the device said screw threaded portion 15 is enclosed within a recess β 16 provided in the barrel member 12 as illustrated in Fig. 2. At its outer end the locking member 14 has an operating knob 11 rigidly fastened thereto. Mounted upon the locking member 14 and slidable within a bore portion 18 of 1®, the barrel member 12 is a sleeve (9, an outer extremity of which contacts with the knob 17. Also mounted upon the locking member 14 within the bore 18 of the barrel member 12 is a helical spring 20, one extremity of which contacts with the inner extremity of the sleeve 19, while the other extremity contacts with a shoulder provided at the inner extremity of the bore 18. When the various members of the fastener are located in their locked positions as illustrated in Mg. 1 20 the spring 20 is held compressed between the sleeve 19 and the inner extremity of the bore IS, but when the screw threaded portion 15 of the locking member 14 is disengaged from the thimble 9 the spring 20 acts to move said lock- 25 ing member axially within the barrel member 12 and hold the screw threaded portion 15 within the recess 16 thereof and out of the path of movement of the upper sash 5 as illustrated in Mg. 2.
The barrel member 12 is provided with a face 30 plate 21 which is held firmly secured against the outer extremity thereof by means of a clamping member 22 through which the sleeve 19 protrudes and in which it slides. The clamping member 22 has a screw threaded connection with the bar- 35 rel member 12. The face plate 21 is secured to the front face of the lower sash 6 by means' of screws 23, and it is evident that said plate will hold the barrel member firmly positioned within the sash 6. 40
The general operation of the fastening member hereinbefore specifically described is as follows: When the upper and lower window sashes 5 and S respectively are located in their closed positions, and the locking member 14 is positioned 45 as illustrated in Mg. 2, if it is desired to lock said sashes closed, the knob 7 is pushed inwardly against the pressure of the spring 20 until the screw threaded end portion 15 of said locking member contacts with the thimble 9, whereupon 50 said knob is rotated and the portion 15 of the locking member is caused to enter the screw threaded recess 1! of said thimble as illustrated in Mg. 1. At this time the sashes 5 and 6 will be securely locked against being opened from the 55
2,201,793 outside by unauthorized persons, and the abutting faces of said sashes will be tightly held one against the other to provide a weather’ tight joint therebetween. When the locking member 14 is & operated to release the sashes 5 and 6, and said ' member 14 is disengaged from the thimble 9, the spring 20 will push against the extremity of the sleeve 19, and the latter will push against the knob 7 causing the screw threaded portion 15 .. of said locking member to enter the recess 16 ‘ of the barrel member 12 where it will not interfere with any subsequent movement of either sash. By securing the face plate 21 to the barrel member 12 by means of the clamping member 22 the face plate is always correctly positioned relatively u to said barrel and there can be no binding action between the sleeve 19 and the face plate during the operation of the locking member.
