SLIDE FASTENED ARTICLE
Charles B. Murphy, Meadville, Pa., assignor to Talon, Inc., a corporation of Pennsylvania
1938, Serial No. 196,427 (a. 36—2) opening on either side to provide fastener element covering flaps formed by the free edges 14 and 15, respectively, which extend into meeting relation to cover the fastener elements. As shown in Fig. 2, the inner lines of stitching 12 5 and outer lines of stitching 13 join the fastener stringers to the article but in such a manner that the width of the tape between these rows or lines of stitching is less than the width of the flexible material between the same rows or lines of stitch- 16 ing. By positioning the rows or lines of stitching in this manner all lateral forces acting upon the sides of the fastener stringers will be taken up entirely by the inner lines or rows of stitching 12 and not by the outer lines or rows of stitching 13. Under this condition the stitches 12 assume an angular position with relation to their normal position while the stitches 13 remain in their normal position. Because any lateral force is thus prevented from pulling on the lines of stitching 20 13, all tendency for the fastener element covering flaps to flare up is eliminated. The entire width of the article material between the two rows of stitching is bowed upwardly as indicated at 16.
It will be understood that the material of the 25 spat or similar garment 16 will ordinarily be relatively thick and soft. When downward pressure comes upon the flaps 14,15 they will bear against the comers of the fastener elements which will impress themselves to some extent in the soft 30 material and allow the edges of these flaps to curve downwardly against the fastener elements on accbunt of the downward pressure upon them. This will be true regardless of whether the fastener is under strain or not because the fullness 35 or curvature in the portions 16 will prevent any tension being transmitted to the row of sitching 13, thus causing the normal compression of the fabric in these portions to continue to act and hold the flaps 14, 15 in place. 40
By way of contrast in the conventional construction as shown in Fig. 3, the width of the tape and the width of the material between the lines of stitching Π and 18 is equal and consequently any lateral force acting on the line of 45 stitching 17 will be equally transmitted to the line of stitching 18. Because of this condition, both lines of stitching will assume an angular position with relation to their normal position and will tend to displace the cover flaps 19 and 50 29, respectively, and cause them to flare up and expose the fastener elements. It will thus be seen in contra-distinction to the condition described in Fig. 2 that when the construction of Fig. 3 is placed under tension the edges 19, 29 55

My invention relates to slide fastened articles and more particularly to articles wherein the material . bordering the opening extends over the fastener to conceal it.
In several articles where it has been attempted to use slide fasteners, particularly articles of clothing which encircle a member of the body, and are under more or less side tension, a problem has appeared in attempting to have the 10 edges of material bordering the slit cover the slide fastener. The side pull on the material will tend to cause the covering edges to flare upwardly and expose the fastener elements. This is especially true in such articles as spats, where the slit 15 is in a rather sharply curved portion of the article.
The primary object of my invention is to solve the above problem in a simple and effective manner. I have discovered that if there are two rows 20 of stitches attaching each side of the slide fastener to the adjacent material and the material of the article is crowded between the rows of stitches to cause it to bow upwardly, then all of the stress in actual use will come on the rows 25 of stitches most remote from the free edges of the material, and the free edges will tend to hug closely against the fastener elements rather than . flare upwardly to expose the fastener elements.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown for 30 purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice. In the drawing:
Fig. 1 shows a spat embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a detailed cross-section through the 35 spat on line 2—2 of Fig. 1 with the stringers under tension; and
Fig. 3 is a. corresponding cross-sectional view showing what happens in the conventional construction.
40 The spat designated 4 is fitted over a shoe 5. ' It may be shown with a decorative false row of buttons 4, and the opening is in the form of a slit 7 in the center of the instep portion. A slide fastener generally designated I is applied 45 underneath the flaps.
The fastener stringers or tapes 9, II carrying interlocking elements 11 on their adjacent edges are secured to the respective sides of the opening or slit 7 by a plurality of rows of securing means 50 preferably by lines of stitching 19 and IS. The lines of stitching on either sides of the opening are spaced apart a suitable distance in parallel relationship to the edges of the opening. The inner lines of stitching 12 are spaced inwardly 55 bf the material a distance from the edge of the
8,188,028 will tend to be turned upwardly so that there will not be any pressure of the flaps against the corners of the fastener elements. This is due to the fact that the upper surface of the soft ma5 terial will shift sideways more than the lower surface so that the flaps tend to curve in the opposite direction from that shown in Fig. 2.
While I have shown and described in this application, one embodiment which this invention 10 may assume in practice, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purposes of illustration and description and that various other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
