A plug 33 is disposed in the bottom of member 24 being held 5 therein by a pin 35 and having a semi-spherical top engaging ball 29. Stem 30 projects through a slot in one side of member 24. Shaft 31 is journalled in plates 36 adjacent the sides of container 10 and secured to said container, and projects 10 through the end walls of said container as shown in Figs. 1, 6 and 7. Split keys 37 extend through shaft . 31 adjacent the inner sides of plates 36 and prevent longitudinal movement of said shaft. Shaft 31 has tapped holes 31α extending thereto through adjacent its ends at the outer side of container 10 and said shaft extends through and is journalled in plates 46 secured to member (7 by the rivets 46α. A handle member 38 has a cylindrical portion having reduced threaded ends 20 adapted to be screwed into apertures 31α and the same has an enlarged grip portion 28α shown as of cylindrical form. Tubes 39 connect with casing 12 adjacent its bottom and extend downwardly through bottom member 11 being sealed there'A~> in, and connect with bosses 40 at opposite sides of container 10 to which are connected coupling members 41. A discharge conduit or hose 42 has a coupling member 43 at its end adapted to be connected with either of members 4( and con30 nected at its other end to suitable discharge pipe and nozzle (not shown). Plug 23 extends upwardly a short distance beyond bottom I ( and a cylindrical screen 44 of comparatively small di-, ameter surrounds the top of said plug and up'5 stands in container (S alongside of casing (2. A resilent member 45 of strip form is secured to the-side of- casing 12 and extends therefrom substantially at right angles, the same having a depressed portion 45α adapted to fit in the top of 4®· screen 44 and having an outwardly projecting portion 45b forming a finger hold. Member 45 can be sprung upwardly by taking hold of portion 45b so that screen member 44. thus may be easily removed for cleaning or any other purpose. 45- An agitating means for the liquid in container (0. is provided, the same comprising, a shaft 47 which extends across, container (0 throughout the long dimension thereof, the same having one end journalled in a small bracket 48 secured to. 50 the inner side of the end. wall of container (0.
Shaft 47 has a central substantially U-shaped portion 47α formed therein extending about one side of casing (2 and at each side of said casing said shaft has plates 49 secured thereto, said 55 plates extending about said shaft at the top thereof and having depending and diverging portions, below said shaft. Plates 49 are secured to shaft 47 by pins 50. Shaft 47 at its other end. has secured thereto by rivets 52 a- sleeve :5(. A rod 60 53. extends into the end; of sleeve 5 ( and is removably secured therein by a split key 54 extending through slots in said sleeve and through a slot 53α in rod 53. Rod 53. extends outwardly through a member 55 having a portion. extend65 ing through an aperture in the end wall of casing (0 with which sleeve 51 engages. Member 55 has a flange at the outer side of said end wall secured tightly thereagainst by soldering or welding. Member 55 has an outwardly projecting 70, threaded portion adapted to receive a threaded gland member 56 having a chamber therein adapted to receive packing 57 surrounding rod 53. Rod . 53 is bent substantially at a right angle at the outer side of member 56 and is again bent 75, substantially, at a right angle at its; terminal: por tion, which portion receives the eyelet formed at the upper end of a link member 58, said, link member being held on said portion, by a split key 59. Link 58 is connected at its other and lower end to a rod 60 having a reduced threaded por- 5 tion extending through shaft 3( at one of the apertures 31α and container (0. Rod 60 is bent substantially at a right angle at its oliter end to receive the eyelet at the lower end of link 58, said link being held thereon by the split key 61. The 10 bent portion of rod .53 forms a crank arm. oscil- . lated by link 58 by the second crank arm formed by rod 60.
A plate 63 is secured to the front side of casing
IS, said plate, extending across said front side 15 and being secured , to casing (0 in any suitable manner as by welding or riveting. Plate 63 is . spaced from said front side of casing (9 for practically all of its width, A channel member 64 is disposed between plate 63 and said front side of 20 said container adjacent the top thereof. Depressions 63α. having concave, outer surfaces are formed, at each side of plate 63 at the top thereof, said, depressions being, substantially semi-oval in elevation and having their greatest width and 25. depth at. the top of said., plate., A larger depress, sion 6.3b is formed in plate 63 substantially cen-. trally thereof, the same having a. concave outer surface and also being substantially semi-oval in elevation and having, its greatest vzidth and depth 30 at the bottom side of said plate. Small brackets ': . 65 are secured to plate 63 at opposite sides <pf depressions-63b and the central portions of which are journalled clips 66 shown as of substantially triangular form adapted to be, engaged by snap 35 hooks 67- secured: to the ends of straps 68,.by which the device is supported on the shoulders of the operator. A bottom plate 70 is provided for the, open lower end of the casing of container 1.0, the same being shown as. somewhat waved or cor- 4Q< rugated in cross section and as having a flange 7Sa fitting about container (0 and removably secured thereto by a plurality of headed screws 71,
A cover 72 is provided, for said container, the same being hinged at one side 72α by hinged 45 links 72b and having a curved· trough-like portion at its opposite side adapted to fit over a bead !Ec formed at the top of container (0. A resilient clasp 73 is. arranged to engage the edge of cover 72 to hold it in position. A bail handle gg 74 is disposed substantially centrally of casing 72 having flanged ends secured to said coyer by the rivets 75. Handle 7.4 is apertured so that snap . , hooks 77. on straps 68 may be engaged therewith. A supplementary handle 76 has semi-cylindrical g6 portions 76α forming finger holds, and is secured to cover 72 between clasp 73 and handle 74 by rivets 76b. A plate 80 extends across container (0 forming a small chamber having, a screened bottom 78 secured thereto through , which the 60 liquid is poured into said container. A resilient clip bracket 79 is secured to. the rear side of container (0 having a semi-cylindrical portion ' , adapted to engage a discharge pipe, and is disposed opposite a bent,-in portion ( Od .of the con- β5 tainer (0.
In operation the container 10 is. carried on the. back of the operator, straps 6.8. extending over the shoulders, of the operator. The front side. 10b is next to the operator’s back and said back- is 70 directly engaged by plate ,63,. The. rear shoulder portions of the operator, can enter the depressions 63α and fit therein while depression 63b fits over the back of the operator at a lower position. The liquid to be sprayed is poured into container
2,192,256 iO with cover 72 swung open. Said cover can conveniently be lifted and swung to open position by moving clasp 73 a short distance and lifting the cover with the fingers by engaging supi plementary handle 76. The liquid to be sprayed will pass through screen 78 so that no large particles will enter container 10. In the spraying operation the operator holds the spray pipe and nozzle with one hand and oscillates handle 38 0’with the other. Handle 38 can be disposed in either of the openings 31α in shaft 31 and the discharge conduit 42 can be connected to either of the outlets 41. The handle will be on the side opposite the outlet. The device is thus adapted 5 to right or left handed operators and any operator can change the handle for rest or variation. The oscillation of handle 38 oscillates shaft 31 and diaphragm 28 is reciprocated by member 24. Liquid is drawn through screen 44 which will be 0 of quite fine mesh through the inlet valve 23 and this liquid will be forced upwardly past valve 14 into the chamber of casing 12. Said chamber forms a liquid pressure chamber with air in the top thereof and when the pressure becomes suffi5 cient, liquid will be forced out through the conduit 39 to which conduit 42 is connected. The other outlet 41 will be closed by a suitable plug. As shaft 31 is oscillated rod 60 forming a crank arm is oscillated and the crank arm on rod 53 0 is thus oscillated by link 58. This oscillates shaft so that blades 49 are oscillated in the container and the liquid therein is stirred up and agitated. It will be seen that shaft 47 and plates 49 may be removed by withdrawing key 54 and 5 then removing rod 53 by moving the same outwardly through member 55. The escape of any liquid around rod 30 is prevented by the packing in member 56. Screen 44 can readily be removed by lifting member 45. Said screen can be easily 10' replaced by placing its lower end over plug 23 and then snapping its upper end under projections 45α. The plate 63 provides for ventilation between the same and container 10. The liquid in said container is often cold and the container & being of metal is thus also cold and this produces a discomfort when directly against the back of the operator. Plate 63 being spaced from container 10 for most of its width provides for an insulating layer of air between the same and 0 container 10 so that the cold effect of the container is eliminated. The auxiliary handle 76 for lifting the lid is quite useful and convenient.
In Figs. 8 and 9 a modified structure is shown for holding screen 44 in place. Instead of having the screen open at its top and engaged by the clip 45, said screen is closed at its upper end and is held by the arms 82 which are resilient and curved to embrace said screen. Said arms are secured to the casing 12. It will be seen that IQ screen 44 can merely be pushed in between arms 82 to be held firmly in place thereby. Said screen is then easily and quickly removable by merely withdrawing the same from arms 82.
From the above description it will be seen that 15 I have produced a sprayer with some very advantageous features or improvements. The construction is comparatively simple and the parts have been arranged for convenient assembly and efficient operation. The device has been amply demΌ onstrated in actual practice, found to be very successful and efficient and is being commercially made.
This application discloses improvements upon the structure disclosed and claimed in my copending application S. N. 157,942, filed August
7, 1937. This application has now matured into Patent No. 2,162,057, granted June 13, 1939.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may. be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without 5 ' departing from the scope of applicant’s invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims. 10
