Claims.

My present invention relates to an ornamental box or container which I have devised for the purpose of holding and displaying in an attractive and ornamental manner such articles 5 as wrist watches, lockets, jewelry, and other small articles of similar character. The object of my invention is to provide a container which by reason of the mechanical construction and arrangement of its parts, will serve when closed as a con10 tainer for the article, and the parts of which may be readily adjusted when the box is opened to display the contained article in a novel and original manner for sale in show cases or on counters, or in a pleasing and ornamental man15 ner on a dressing table or bureau in the house. These objects I have attained by the novel construction and arrangements of the parts of the container, as will appear from the description hereinafter given, the essential elements of my 20 invention being more particularly set forth in the appended claims.

The base or body member of the box may conveniently be constructed, as illustrated, of a rectangular frame I of stamped sheet metal to which is seemed a bottom sheet 2 of fibre board or 45 other suitable material. The two¹ longer sides of the base member are equipped at the top with spring hinges 3 whereby the pair of cover members 4—4 are seemed to the body, these hinges being of the well-known construction which op50 erates to yieldingly hold the cover members alternatively either in closed position, or in open position. The cover members are cmved to provide a suitable recess for reception of the article which the box is designed to receive, and pref55 erably are covered and lined, or otherwise orna(CI. 206—75) mented to present a pleasing appearance, both when the covers are open and when they are closed.

The inner side of the frame member f is formed to provide a seat for the supporting pad member 5 5 of the pad structure, which pad may be formed of any suitable material, and is preferably provided with a covering of plush or other suitable ornamental material. The center of this pad is cut away and formed with side and end walls ¹⁰defining an opening in the pad member, which walls extend to a level a short distance above the bottom of the container. Two opposite ones of these vertical walls are formed at the bottom with inwardly disposed horizontal flanges 6—6 15 which terminate short of the proximate end wall of the opening, thus providing recesses between the ends of the flanges and the end walls of the opening.

Seated within the opening of the supporting 20 pad 5 and supported upon its flanges 6 is arranged a removable display pad 7, which in the present instance, though not necessarily, is cmved similarly to the cover members. On the top face of this display pad, and extending longitudinally 25 thereof, is formed a central strap-receiving or chain-receiving channel or groove 8 between opposite flanges 9—9, which latter extend beyond the ends of the groove to form corner lugs 10—10. These lugs are so constructed that when the 30 display pad is removed from its seat in the supporting pad, the display pad may be arranged in an inclined position, with the lugs 10—10 at one end extending downwardly into the recesses between the ends of the supporting flanges 6—6 of 35 the supporting pad and the proximate side and walls of the opening therein, to hold the display pad in display position.

When in inclined position the lower face of the lugs 10 will stop against the proximate ends 40 of the flanges 6 at their points of contact therewith, and the upper cmved face of such lugs will stop against the lower edge of the end wall opening in the supporting pad, the ends of the lugs 10 extending downwardly into the recesses at the 45 ends of the flanges 6—6, and the two stops thus provided, in connection with the friction between the contacting parts and the cmved contom of the upper face of the lugs 10, serving to restrain the display pad from shifting from the 50 inclined position to which it has been set.

While as illustrated and described the flanges 6—6 terminate at both ends short of the ends of the opening in the supporting pad, thus enabling the display pad to be supported at either end, it 55

2,178,663 is obvious that if desired they may at one end extend to the end of the opening. It is also obvious that while the flanges 9—9 are described as continuous members, they may be interrupted, 5 or separate lugs employed so spaced as to perform the functions described, as full equivalents of the specific structure described.

The groove 8 provides a suitable seat to receive the strap of a wrist watch, or the chain of 4θ a locket or similar article to be displayed on the pad structure, and when the box is open and the removable pad set to inclined central position between the symmetrical vertical walls formed by the sections of the cover members, a very ₁₅ pleasing and attractive appearance is presented.
