This invention relates to concealed hinges arid .. .particularly , devices of .this class .designed for use upon inner surfaces of .stationary .and .swinging supports with .the .attaching plate .p.ortions .Ar S .ranged .in a .plane.of the longitudinal.plane, of the supports when the .hinge is in closed .position, and the object of the invention is .to pro• -vide.a; hinge, of the class. described, employing butt members having: flat attaching plate portions con10 stituting the, outer surface oftthe hinge,..and,link supporting hearings: extending rearwardly .from the central parts of the attaching plate portions to provide a relatively thin and compact arrangement of butts and links; a further object 15 being to' provide a hinge of the character described wherein two pairs of similar links are arranged in interfitting relation, the . separate 'pairs of links being fixedly pivoted at One end to the respective butts and movably coupled at their 20 other ends to the opposed- butts, the pairs of links ' 'being pivoted together centrally thereof in such manner as to dispose the pivot intermediate the bearing portions of the ’ respective butts when the hinge is in closed position; a still further 25. object being to provide a hinge of the character described wherein the separate butts are preferably composed of die castings whereby a simple and economical hinge structure is provided; a further object being.to provide a hinge of the char30 acter'.described . wherein the complete hinge, is formed from actually· two parts aside from the .pintle' pins ..employed, the .parts being pimply duplicated,, and with, these, and-.other objects,,in view the invention consists in a hinge of ..the 35 class and for the purpose specified .which..,is simple in-construction, efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. . .
The invention is fully disclosed in the follow40 ing‘ specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement , are designated by suitable reference characterstn each of the views, and . in ..which:
45 Fig. 1 is a rear view of the hinge in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a side edge view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the hinge in closed . -n position.

2,178,271 of the butt 10α, and a pin 33 is mounted in the bearing 26 of the pairs of links 21a and operates in the grooves 18 of the butt 10. The respective pairs of links 21, 2 la are pivoted together at the 5 bearing 27 by pin 34.
From the foregoing it will appear that the complete hinge is made from a single butt part ¢0, ί 0α and from a single link which is used in multiples to make up the pairs of links 21,21α plus the 10 use of the pintle pins employed. It will therefore be seen that a very economical hinge structure is provided.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the butts 10, ί 0α are shown mounted in connection with supports 35 and 36' 15 respectively. The support 35 constitutes the swinging member and the support 36 the stationary support. In the construction shown, these supports are in the form of sheet metal plates, and rivets 37 are employed, note Fig. 4, 20 for securing the butts in position. However, any type of fastening may be provided. It will be understood that the butts may be mortised in recesses formed in the inner surfaces of the supports in the usual manner, depending entirely 25 upon the construction of the supports.
In the construction shown, the hinge is designed to swing through an arc of 180° so as to bring the two supports 35 and 36, which are normally in one alinement, into parallel relation 30 to each other, as is indicated in Fig. 6 of the drawing. In this connection it will be apparent that the spacing between the butts may be varied by the linkage to suit supports of different thicknesses, while at the same time bringing ad35 jacent edges of the supports in close proximity to each other, as is indicated at 38 in Fig. 4 of the drawing. It will also appear that the links are recessed at opposite sides of the central bearings 27 as indicated at 39, note Fig. 6, to clear the 40 protruding adjacent edges of the supports 35 and 36 when the hinge is moved into open position.
The bottom surface 17 of the bearing 16 of the butt 10 is recessed to form a stop shoulder 40. A similar shoulder 40α is formed on the upper 45 surface 17 of the upper bearing 16 of the butt 10α against which the links 22, fixedly pivoted to the butts (0, 10α, strike in limiting the closing movement of the hinge. The engagement with the shoulder 40 is clearly seen in Fig. 5 of the 50 drawing, which shoulder is arranged diagonally as will appear. The opening movement of the hinge is limited by the inner ends of the grooves 18, as will be apparent.
The hinge of the character described is com55 paratively thin in thickness, that is to say, the distance between the front face 11 and the back of the hinge. This thickness may be varied by using different linkage and otherwise modifying the structure of the hinge. It will also be noted 60 that by virtue of the linkage employed, the hinge can be mortised within the boundaries of the depth or thickness of the hinge, as the links do no not swing inwardly beyond the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in the operation of moving the θ5 hinge into open position.
When the hinge is in closed position it will appear that the overlapped pairs of links form a substantially solid supporting wall between opposed surfaces 17 of the bearing 16 adjacent the 70 Pivot 34, as will appear from a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing, whereas a similar support is provided between the pairs of links when the hinge is in open position, as seen in Fig. 7 of the drawing. The combined laminated links form a curved solid arch between the adjacent surfaces 17 of both butts. These structural features will produce a very strong and durable hinge by reason of the fact that the solid wall structure is maintained substantially at all times 5 throughout the swinging movement of the hinge, thereby producing the effect of a solid link between the two butt parts in the several positions thereof.
In the construction shown in Fig. 8 I have j0 illustrated two butts 41, 4ία different from the butts ID, 10α simply in the provision of wider bearing portions 42, and by modifying the shape of the pairs of links 43, 43α so that said pairs of links will be completely housed within the bear- ig ings 42 of the butts 4ί, 41α as will be apparent. With this construction, the pairs of links 43 are pivoted to the butt 41 as at 44 and movably coupled with the butt 41α as at 45, whereas the links 43α are fixedly pivoted to the butt 41α as at 20 46 and movably coupled with the butt 41 as at 47, the same as in the structure shown in the other figures, the two pairs of links being pivotally coupled centrally thereof as at 48.
It will of course be understood that other 25 shapes and forms of links and butts may be employed as well as a different arrangement or manner of mounting the respective butts may be provided in different uses of the hinge.
