This invention relates to a novel and improved form of badge, the novel features of which will be best understood from the following description and the annexed drawings, in which we have 5 shown a selected embodiment of the invention and in which:

Fig. 1 is a face view of a badge constructed according to our invention;

Fig. 2 is a view on a greatly enlarged scale of 10 the rear of the badge;

Fig. 3 is a section approximately on the line 3—3 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 4 is a section approximately on the line 4—4 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the parts in different positions;

Fig. 6 is a view of the license forming part of the badge;

Fig. 7 is a view showing certain parts of the 20 badge disassembled;

Fig. 8 is a view showing the parts of Fig. 7 during their assembly;

Fig. 9 shows the parts of Figs. 7 and 8 after their assembly is completed.

The badge is shown as comprising a front plate I and a back plate 2. The badge is of rectangular form, as plainly shown, and each of the plates I and 2 have the same form, although the plate 2 is smaller than the plate I so that it 30 may fit within rearwardly extending flanges 3 which extend backwards from all four sides of the plate I. On three of these four sides, the flanges terminate in inwardly extending ears 4, 5, and 6.

The back plate 2 is preferably formed of resilient material and is bowed lengthwise of the badge, the high part of the bow engaging beneath the opposite ears 4 and 5, as best shown in Fig. 4.

Plate likewise engages beneath and contacts with the ear 6, whereas the other end is preferably slit, as shown at 7 and 8, whereby it is divided into three parts or tongues 9, 10, and II. The two tongues 9 and 11 have their edge portions bent backwardly towards the edge 12 of the flange at that end of the front plate, whereas the central tongue 10 is bent downwardly towards the front plate I.

The front plate I Is provided with a window 13 50 through which may be seen any object which is held in place between the front and back plates. Preferably, this window is closed by a sheet 14 of transparent material which is held in place against the back of the front plate by the resili55 ence of the back plate.

The back plate carries a pin of the safety type preferably formed of a single length of wire having a coil 15 and a guard 16 to receive the point 17 of the pin. The other end 18 of the wire forms an abutment contacting with the rear surface of 5 the back plate 2.

The back plate is provided with a slot 19 extending inwardly from one edge thereof and is also provided with a hole 20 spaced from the slot and preferably in line therewith, as indicated. 10 The clear distance 21 between the hole and the closed end of the slot is materially greater than the clear distance 22 between the guard and the coil of the pin, so that when the parts are assembled the end 18 of the wire will be between 15 the slot and the hole, as indicated. The distance 21 is slightly greater than the clear distance 22'. The parts may then be assembled, as shown in Figs. 7, 8, and 9, the guard end of the pin being slipped into the slot 19 and the pointed 20 end of the pin being inserted through the hole 20 until the parts reach some such position as indicated in Fig. 8. When thus being inserted, it may be necessary to straighten out the coil to some extent by bending the pointed end 17 away 25 from the guard still further than what is shown in Fig. 8. The parts are then clamped together by pressing the coil 15 through the hole 20, the plate 2 or the pin, or both, yielding slightly to permit this action, when it will be seen that the 30 end 18 will bear against the rear of the back plate 2 and will cooperate with the main part or body 23 of the pin and with the coil 15 to hold the pin and plate firmly together while at the same time permitting ready detachment, if necessary. This 35 portion of the pin is provided with offsets, plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 5, to prevent tilting of the pin, as is known in the art.

The badge is particularly adapted for use in combination with a license, for example a hunt- 40 ing or fishing license. It has been customary for a State to issue such licenses and for the holder of such a license to carry an identification of some kind on a badge. This identification may correspond to an automobile license plate, but the 45 actual license is often left at home by the hunter or fisherman. At the same time, the procedure of having a license on a printed form, and another printed form to go into a badge, causes an expensive duplication. 50

The above drawbacks Have been obviated by our invention, in that we have made our badge preferably rectangular so that a rectangularshaped license 24 (Fig. 6) may be conveniently folded and placed in the badge between the front 55

9,148,886 and rear plates In some such manner as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The two plates will hold the license securely in place where it will be protected by the transparent sheet 14. We also print 5 the license in such a way that on a certain part thereof, preferably at a corner thereof, there will appear a summary 25 of the license, this summary, for example, including the name of the State, the number of the license, the year in 10 which it was granted, and the general character of the license. For example, in Fig. 1 we have indicated the summary as including a statement that the license is a “Resident, hunting, and fishing license”. The license is so folded that this 15 summary will appear at the window i3 when the license is placed in the badge between the front and rear plates, and the sizes of the license and the badge are so designed that the license may be readily folded with the summary appearing at 20 the window of the badge.

In operation, and assuming that there is no license in the badge, the license may be first folded, for example along the lines 26 indicated in Fig. 6, so that the summary will be in the 25 Proper position. Then the back plate may be removed from the front plate of the badge. This may be done by pressing rearwardly against the back plate through the window 14, or may be done by grasping the coil 15 and pulling back30 wardly thereon when the tongues 9, i 0, and ί I will slide easily over the edge 12 of the adjacent flange. The backward bending of the tongues 9 and I! aid in this operation, and a finger recess 27 is provided in the flange 3 for engagement of 35 the tongue i β with a finger nail, if desired. The tongue iO is likewise provided with a recess 28 for the same purpose.

After the tongues 9, fO, and li are slid past the edge 12, the entire back plate may be slid 40 lengthwise of the front plate, somewhat as indicated in Fig. 5, until the two plates are entirely separated. Then the folded license may be placed in position with the summary appearing in the window 13, after which the back plate may 45 be slid into position beneath the ears 4, 5, and 6, at which time the tongues 9, 10, and ί I will snap back into some position as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The back plate is preferably of resilient sheet metal, as of course will be understood. ₅₀ When it is necessary to remove the license, <>f course the operation may be repeated.

While we have shown the invention as cmbodied in a specific form, it is to be understood that various changes in detail may be made ₅₅ without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
