UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
2,139,151 SILENCER, CONSTRUCTION Floyd E. Deremer, Detroit, Mich. Application March 16, 1936, Serial No. 69,101 1 Claim. (Cl. 181—48)
This application relates to silencer constructions.
The silencer construction herein disclosed is characterized by its being a through-passage type of silencer composed of three nested shells or tubes, the outer one of which forms a casing, the innermost one of which forms the gas passage tube, and the intermediate one of which forms an annular wall for high frequency sound wave attenuation chambers disposed in the annular space between the innermost tube and the intermediate tube, such space being compartmented into attenuation chambers by transverse annular diaphragms. The silencer herein disclosed is further characterized by the fact that the intermediate tube terminates short of the inlet end header of the silencer so that perforations in the innermost tube between such end header and the adjacent end of the intermediate tube communicate the interior of the innermost tube directly with the space around the intermediate tube. This feature contrasts the construction herein disclosed from the construction disclosed in Fig. 6 of the Oldberg patent, No. 1,878,424, of September 20, 1932, and in the Oldberg patent, No. 1,938,973, of December 12, 1933, where, because the intermediate tube extends directly to the inlet end header, communication from the inlet end of the innermost tube, to the space surrounding the intermediate tube, must be established through openings of the intermediate tube.
The silencer herein disclosed may be best understood upon reference to the appended drawing. In this drawing,
Fig. 1 is an elevational section of a silencer of the invention;
The silencer herein disclosed comprises an outer casing (9 closed by end headers II—12 connected by an innermost tube 14 having a plurality of perforations on its surface, many of which serve to communicate the interior of the 5 innermost tube with chambers 15 formed in the annular space between the innermost tube and an intermediate tube 16, which chambers are defined by transverse diaphragms 17.
It will be observed that the end of the inter- 10 mediate tube 16 adjacent the inlet end header 11 is longitudinally spaced from such header to provide a clear portion of the innermost tube, with the result that the perforations in such clear portion communicate the interior of the inner- 15 most tube directly with the space surrounding the intermediate tube.
Now having described the silencer construction herein indicated, reference will be had to the claim which follows for a determination of 20 the monopoly sought to be obtained herein.
