The present invention relates to sheaths or receptacles for tools and mechanics’ implements and more particularly to pockets for this purpose attached to the workmen’s overalls or other outer 5 garment.

The primary object of our invention is to provide a sheath or pocket of an improved form by phich the workman is afforded protection against accidental injury when the pocket contains such 10 sharp implements as a chisel, putty knife, etc., and also to minimize the chance of the tool becoming accidentally dislodged from the pocket.

A further object of our invention is to provide a novel arrangement of flap or closure for the 15 pocket which, when open, will function as a guide to facilitate the convenient placement of the tool into the pocket, the advantage of this feature being apparent in considering the frequent use of some of the mechanics’ tools.

Another feature of our safety tool pocket resides in the adaptability of the closure flap to forming the closure for a plurality of pockets superimposed over one another so that the opening of the single closure will render accessible the 25 contents of any or all of the pockets at the same time.

The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in con30 nection with the accompanying drawings which form part of the application.

In the drawings:

Figs. 1 and 2 are perspective views of our tool pocket attached to a garment showing the novel 35 closure for same in open and closed position, respectively.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tool pocket secured to a garment and showing a modified form of the closure for same in open position, the 40 closed position being shown in phantom.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another modified form of my safety tool pocket.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a further modified form which includes all the elements of Fig. 45 3, and the outer pocket of the form of Figs. 1 and 2.

In the fabrication of overalls or workmen’s garments a pocket is constructed by sewing or otherwise securing a rectangular piece of mate50 rial to the outer surface of the garment along two or more of the edges. Such a pocket is illustrated in the drawings and indicated by numeral 5, the same being unattached at its upper edge to form the opening into the pocket and being secured to 55 the garment as by being stitched along the lines 6.

The preferred form of closure or flap for the pocket is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and, being adapted to forming the closure for a plurality of pockets, a second pocket 7 is shown preferably constructed as by sewing in superimposed position 5 on the first pocket 5 along the lines 8 a similar piece of material, the upper edge of which is unattached to provide the opening into the pocket.

A closure flap 8 comprising a rectangular piece of resilient material, such as cloth or leather, is 10 secured to a garment along either of its vertical edges 9 and preferably by continuing the stitching 6 of the pocket 5 upwardly to include the contiguous portion of the flap 8. The underside of the flap 8 is provided with a plurality, preferably 15 three, of openable fastening means such as the conventional snap fastener 10 shown. These snap fasteners 10 are preferably disposed one at each free corner of the flap 8 and a third intermediate the top edge of same. Complemental snap fas- 20 tener members 11 are secured in similar relation to appropriate portions of the outer garment and the pocket 5 so that when the flap 8 is swung to closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, same may be secured in position by engagement of the re- 25 spective members 10 and 11 of the snap fasteners.

Complemental members of a snap fastener 12 are also attached respectively to the free edge of the pocket 5 and the corresponding portion of the garment to provide an additional closure for 30 the pocket 5 when access is required only to the pocket 7. When access to either of the pockets 5 or 7 is required the flap 8 is swung to one side, as shown in Fig. 1, and is there secured by a similar snap fastener f7, a member of which is fas- 35 tened to the garment so that the portion of the flap 8 adjacent the fixed edge 9 forms a rolled or rounded portion 14.

It will be observed by reference to Fig. 1 that the rolled portion 14 is contiguous from both the 40 pocket 5 and the pocket 7. In the insertion of a tool or implement in either of the mentioned pockets the rolled form 14 in its relation to either of the pockets functions as a guiding recess into which a portion of the tool being inserted may be 45 placed so that the tool may readily be further inserted into the pocket without catching on the free edges of same.

It will be observed by reference to Fig. 2 that the flap 8, being secured in closed position by the 50 several snap fasteners 10, forms a common closure for both the pockets 5 and 7.

Reference is now directed to Fig. 3 illustrating a modified form of closure for the tool pocket 5. In this form the closure flap is indicated by the 55

2,129,196 numeral 15 and is secured in position by being attached along one of its vertical edges 16 to the garment in such position that the lower portion of the rectangular piece forming the flap 15 over5 laps the upper portion of the pocket 5. The flap 15 is stitched or otherwise attached to the pocket 5 along the line 11. The flap 15, being secured at two adjacent edges, is opened by bending over a diagonal line extending between the corners of io the flap adjacent the attached edges of same and is held in this position by a suitable fastener 18 positioned at the free corner thereof. The member of the fastener i 8 secured to the free corner flap 15 is of double form so that same may func15 tion to engage either of two complemental fastener members one being indicated by the reference numeral 18' and the other is shown as being covered by the flap, but is secured to the pocket 5 in the path of the member ί 8 so as to cooperate with 20 the member 18', to hold the flap 15 in either opened or closed position. A second fastener 19 is positioned intermediate the upper free edge of the flap 15 to engage a complemental fastener member 19' when the flap ί 5 is closed.

It will be noted from Fig. 3 that the flap 15 in open position forms a rolled edge 20 along its diagonal line so as to present a recess contiguous from the interior of the pocket 5, which recess may function as a guide similar to that described ³⁰ for the rolled edge 14 to facilitate the insertion of the tool into the pocket. The free end of the tool, being inserted between the extending portion of the open flap 15 and the garment, functions to 3g guide the tool further into the pocket 5.

Reference is now directed to Fig. 4 for a detailed description of the second modified form of my tool pocket. In this form a flap 8 is also provided in similar arrangement to that illustrated in 40 Figs. 1 and 2. In addition to the closure provided by the flap 8 a second closure for the pocket 5 is presented by providing a zipper 21, the complemental portions of which are secured respectively to the free edge of the pocket 5 and the adjacent portion of the garment. The zipper 21 permits of 5 conveniently closing the pocket 5 temporarily without necessitating the placement of the flap 8 in closed position, so that the rolled edge 14 of same provides a guiding means for insertion of the tool at all times. 10

The modified form of Fig. 5 is identical in all respects to the form of Fig. 3, with the single exception that the form of Fig. 5 includes the outer or second pocket 7 of the form of Figs. 1 and 2, therefore further comments directed to the form of 15 Fig. 5 is deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood that this improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawings nor to the precise construction described and, there- 20 fore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
