EASEL DISPLAY SUPPORT

This invention relates to a unit for retaining signs, posters, price tags, advertising cards, and other printed matters for display purposes. In accordance with the invention the advertising 5 matter is merely pressed by the fingers against the support and is thereby firmly retained in place, arid it can be readily removed by merely pulling it.away from the support.

Further details and advantages of the inven10 tion will be apparent from the following specification and drawing, wherein

Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank for making a preferred form of the easel support,

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the easel support at a later stage of the set-up,

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the easel support completely set up in relation to a card which 2o it may retain, and

Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on lines 5—5 of Figure 4.

As shown in the drawing, the easel support is made up from a blank 18 which is slit along line 25 18 and scored along line 13 to form two substantially triangular portions IS and 14, and flange portions 25 and 26. Slit 18 is continued by score line 17 which provides a hinge for flange portions 25 and 26.

The portion 14 is scored along line 9 to form a small hinged tab 15. Flange 25 is scored along line I i to form a hinged tab 19.

Flanges 25 and 26, arid tab 19 are coated with a pressure sensitive composition 5. I prefer to 35 use a hot melt pressure sensitive composition. This composition consists essentially of a cohesive agent, an adhesive agent, a plasticizer and a modifier. The following composition is suitable for use on display units made of cardboard.

The composition is preferably heated to about 180-200° F. and is applied to the base sheet by means of a roll Or doctor blade heated to about 180-200° F. so as to spread a thin layer of the composition of suitable thickness on the base 55 sheet. The base-sheet is preferably supported on a heated roll coacting with the spreader roll and spaced away sufficiently to permit the desired thickness of coating to be applied. After the adhesive coating is spread it is congealed by passing the web over a chilled roll and a cover 5 strip is applied lightly thereto: This method and apparatus for carrying same out is disclosed in copending application Serial 99,648, which matured to Patent No. 2,089,525, dated August 10, 1937. iio

In order to protect the adhesive coating 5 applied on flange portions 25 and 26, and tab 19 prior to use, a peelable cover strip 3 is applied thereto. Such cover strip may be made of glassine, Holland cloth and the like which will 15 adhere to the adhesive coating but will readily peel therefrom. One margin 8 of the cover strip extends beyond the score line 13 so that when the blank is folded on score line 13 as shown in Figure 2 the cover strip 3 may be readily grasped ₂q and peeled from the adhesive coating.

In setting up the easel support the cover strip 18 is first peeled oS after the blank is folded along score line 13 as shown in Figure 2. Flanges 25 and 26 are then bent at right angles to each 25 other on score line 17. Triangular portion 14 will then be superposed on triangular portion 12 as shown in Figure 3.

Tab SO is then folded at right angles to flange 25 along score line U as shown in Figure 3. ₃₀Tab IS is then folded over into engagement with the adhesive surface on tab 99 and pressed against same so as to retain it in place as shown In Figure 4, thereby forming the completely set up easel support. 35

The easel thus constructed consists of two. hinged flange portions 2S and 26 which are retained at an angle to each other by means of tabs 15 and 19. Any other means may, of course, be utilized for maintaining the flanges in suit- 40, able relation by other fastening means such as staples, pins and the like. When the easel is set up the triangular portions 12 and 14 serve as re- . inforcing or strut members for the corresponding flanges 2S and H. Flange 26 is doubly re- 45 inforced by the two overlapping triangular portions 12 and 14..

As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the easel support is attached to any suitable supporting surface 42 by pressing the flange 26 thereagainst. The 50 pressure sensitive adhesive composition used is of such a character that the easel support can be readily pressed against any type of supporting surface such as wood, glas^metal, painted, varnished, or enameled surfaces without fouling or 55

The easel can be readily removed by simply peeling it off the surface to which it is affixed and it can be reapplied to the same or any other surface by simply pressing it with the - fingers. Flange 21 being coated with pressure sensitive adhesive 5 is adapted to retain a printed card such as 40 for display purposes. This card is affixed to the flange by simply pressing it against the flange 25, and can be readily rein moved by peeling it o‘ff. Any other suitable objects, such as cartons, jewelry, etc., can thus be affixed for display purposes.

The blank for forming the easel may be made of any suitable sheet material such as cardboard, 15 sheet metal, veneer, stiffened cloth, sheets made of synthetic materials such as celluloid, resins and the like. Although a specific contour of the blank has been described, it is obvious that it is merely given as an exemplification of the inven20 tion. Any other suitable shape, form or contour may be given to the blank or the easel support embodying the principles of the construction disclosed. It is intended to include in the appended claims the many variations and changes which 25 may be made of the specific embodiment of the invention herein disclosed.
