This invention relates to garbage can liners.

The general object of my invention is to provide a garbage can liner which is made Of paper impregnated with wax or other suitable material 5 which may obtain an antiseptic and wherein the liner includes an upper rim portion adapted to engage the rim of a garbage can and to be clamped thereto by the lid.

A more specific object of the invention is to 10 provide a novel garbage can liner including a folded-over rim portion which is interlocked to securely hold the parts assembled.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel collapsible liner for a garbage can.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combination garbage can and liner wherein novel means is provided for holding the liner in the can and for providing a tight seal when the lid is in position.

Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Mg. 10 is a perspective view looking towards the bottom portion of the liner and showing the liner collapsed.

Referring to the drawing by reference charac45 ters I have indicated my invention generally at 10 as comprising a garbage can 11 and a liner 12 which is disposed therein.

The garbage can is preferably made of metal and includes a bottom 13, a side 14, with a bail 50 15 pivotally mounted on the side. The upper portion of the side of the garbage can is rolled over as at 16 to form a loop which stiffens the upper portion of the garbage can.

The garbage can is provided with a lid Π hav55 ing a handle 18 and having a peripheral flange which coacts with the upper end of the liner and bead 16 to form a tight seal, as will be presently described.

My liner is preferably made from a blank shown at 20 in Mg. 4 and this blank is preferably 5 cut from a good grade of paper and is preferably impregnated with wax to which a suitable sterilizing material may be added if desired.

The blank 20 has a circular periphery 21 and is provided with a pair of concentric score lines 10 22 and 23 with the line 22 disposed nearer the periphery 21 than to the line 23 so that annular portions a and b are provided.

The blank is further provided with a central, circular score line 24 to form a circle c which is 15 concentric with the score lines 22 and 23 and with the periphery 21. Extending inwardly from the periphery 21 are a plurality of pairs of score lines 25 which score lines extend to the inner circle 24 and are parallel to each other to form ₂o portions d which are disposed at right angles to each other.

Additional score lines 26 start at the inner circle 24 adjacent the intersection of each score line 25 and the circle 24 and extend outwardly to ₂₅the circle 23 to form portions c. The lines 26 are continued to the periphery as diverging score lines 27 as is clearly shown in the drawing to form portions t ·

In the formation of a liner from a scored blank ₃₀20 the material of one of the portions a in Mg. 4 is folded upwardly substantially along the line 24 and is then folded outward along the score lines 26 and 26 and the part adjacent to the score line 26 is folded as shown in Mg. 5 to a 35 position wherein the score lines 27 are adjacent a score line 25“. The triangular portion 27“ formed by the score lines 27 is then folded inward as clearly shown in Mg. 6.

Thereafter the material is folded outward 40 along a line 26“ and the line 25^a. The line 26“ is then folded as shown in Mg. 7 to a position wherein it overlaps the previously folded portion and score lines 26^b are adjacent the score line 25. The triangular portion 27® formed by 45 the score lines 27^b is then folded inward similar to the triangular portions 27“ An enlarged view of one completed folded section or panel is shown in Mg. 9. The material is folded in order along all the sets of score lines as just described until 50 the blank is completed folded to the position shown in Mg. 8. Thereafter the upper edge of the material is folded downward along the line 22 to form a folded portion 33 and thereafter the material is again folded downward along the line 55

2,104,686 to form a portion 34. When the upper edge is thus folded the portion 34 extends downward and the portion 33 extends upward as clearly shown in Fig. 3.

In use the liner is shipped in the condition shown in Fig. 10 and when received by the housewife it is opened out and placed in the garbage can with the portion b of the liner extending downwardly as shown in Fig. 2 and with the 10 portion a of the liner extending upwardly and engaging under the loop 16, so that when the lid IT is raised the liner will not be raised with it but will hold by its engagement under the bead.

At 36 I have shown a wire or cord member 36 15 which extends around the liner between the portions a and which includes a handle portion 37 passing through a hole at each side of the liner. These projecting portions 37 can be grasped thus allowing the liner to be removed without touch20 ing the same.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a novel garbage can liner which is simple in construction and which can be economically manufactured.
