DEVICE FOR REGULATING CUTTING - HEIGHT’ - Karl Hagebeuker, Solingen, Germany
Application January 19, 1934, Serial No. 707,344 1 Claim. (Cl. 30—202)
This invention! relates to a device attachable to a hair cutting machine for regulating the cutting height.
The device according to the invention consists in the main of a slidable comb which is automatically advanced during the forward motion of the cutting machine by the holding of a member, such as a chain etc., located outside the device so as to uniformly increase the cutting height in a certain proportion to the advance, of the cutting head of the clipper. The device according to the invention permits therefore a neat transition from a very close cut resembling shaving to a.greater cutting height which leaves the hair longer.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which
Fig. 1 shows a side view of the advancing member for the comb plate,
Fig. 2 shows a plan view of Fig. 1,

Referring to the drawing, the disc 2 provided with a resilient bulge I is attached to the screw 3 by means of its bore 4. The screw 3, together with the disc 2, is then screwed from below into the threaded hole 5 of the ground plate 6 so as 55 to remain just rotatable. The ground plate S is then inserted in a dovetailed guide 7 below the comb plate 8, so that the free end of the screw 3 is placed in the slot 9 of the comb plate 8. Inside the comb plate 8 a recess 10 is provided through which the member 11 can be screwed 5 to the ground plate S by means of suitable screws the member ί ( possessing a rack-like attachment 12 which extends through the opening 10 of the comb plate 8.
Th® drive for the device consists of the shaft 10 13 which carries at one end the pulley (4 and lri_the center the pinion 14α adapted to mesh with the toothing of the rack-like attachment 12. The pinion (4α carries at its front end a square member ¢5 serving as support for the square end 15 17 of the spring (6, as indicated in Figs. 6, 17 and 18. If the pulley 14, the pinion (4α and the spring 15 are disposed on the shaft (3, the free end of the latter is provided with a closing member 18. . The shaft (3 with the parts seated thereon is then placed on the comb plate 8 in such a way that the pinion 14α is in mesh with the toothing 12, the entire structure being held in position by a bearing plate (9 attachable to the comb plate 8 by screws. To insure a secure 25 construction comb plate 8 has projections 20 and .J which engage the grooves 22 and 23 in “ePinion and the closing part 18. In Fig. 18, the arrangement of the various parts is shown, the bearing plate 19 being omitted. The pullev in 14 is provided with a chain 24 having a suitable pulling member 25. As shown in Figs. 4 and 18 2B is a cam disc which is attached to the free end of the screw 3 and protected against dropping out by a check-nut 27. 35
The spring (6 tends to draw back the comb plate 8 as far as possible relative to the ground plate S, but by tightening the nut 27 the comb Plate 8 can remain clamped with the ground plate 6 m adjusted position.
The cutting head 28 shown in Fig. 12 carries in its front part the knives 29 and has on its upper side an oblique guide 30 which forms a shoulder 31 in the body 28. 32 is the countersunk head „„n SC-r„eW- The ground P^te 8 possesses on its 45 headl^6 & SUltable slot guide 33 for the screw
To attach the device to a say electric hair 7« u gr°Und plate S is Placed θη the screw head 32, by means or the bore 33. The disc 2 50 is then turned so that it abuts, owing to its resilient bulge I, against the shoulder 31 of the cuttmg.head 28 whereby the screw head 32 is pressed into the end of the slot 33 of the ground plate 6 to insure firm seating of the device on the clip- 55
2,103,418 per, as indicated in Fig. 19. As shown by dash lines in Fig. 8, the underside of the ground plate 6 may be provided with the guide ledges 34 sliding in grooves, not shown, on the member 30.
The device functions as follows:
When the device has been attached to the electric clipper, the parts thereof are in the position shown in Figs. 18 and 19. The comb plate 8 is fully drawn back, so that the clipper can 10 carry out a razor-like cut. To provide gradually for greater cutting length the chain 24 must be held at a certain point so that the pulley 14 will be rotated during further advance of the clipper and, by means of the gear 14, 12, the comb 15 plate 8 will be gradually pushed forward into the position indicated by dashes in Fig. 19. A return motion of the clipper will in the same manner lead to a reduction in cutting height. If the device is to be adjusted to a special cut90 ting height, the comb plate 8 must first be brought into the desired position by pulling the chain 24, whereupon the member 27 is tightened to keep’ the device in adjusted position. The cutting height can be regulated within certain limits by the cam disc 26 whose cams abut against an extension 40 on the comb plate 8, for which pur- 5 pose the cams of the disc 26 differ in height.
