UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
2,089,999 COLLAPSIBLE TOOL CABINET UNIT William E. Greene, New York, N. Y. Application February 27, 1936, Serial No. 65,941 4 Claim». (Cl. 312—1)
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a collapsible tool cabinet unit.
The invention has for an object the construction of a unit as mentioned which is character6 ized by a flat vertical member supporting a tool cabinet, a drawer cabinet, a motor driven buffer and emery wheel, and a work table.
More particularly, it Is contemplated to so arrange the various parts that the flat vertical 10 member may comprise the door of a closet or other similar element. When thus constructed, the tool cabinet Is Inconspicuous and at the same time convenient to be used when desired.
A further object of this Invention Is to arrange 15 the table board adjustable so that It may be extended outwards when used and moved flat against the vertical member when not used.
Still further the invention proposes to arrange a door for closing the tool cabinet and to pro20 vide a mechanism for automatically moving the table board up to the horizontal working position when the door of the cabinet Is opened.
Another object of this Invention Is to arrange a movable light upon the flat vertical member so. 25 that proper illumination may be had when the device is being used.
For further comprehension of the Invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description 30 and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the Invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:—
Fig. 1 Is a perspective view of a closet door used In conjunction with the collapsible tool cabinet unit according to this Invention.
Fig. 2 Is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the tool cabinet door open and the 40 table board In the horizontal position.
Fig. 3 Is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3—3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 Is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view of a portion of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 Is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5—5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 Is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 6—6 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view 50 of a portion of Fig. 3.
f ig. 8 is a sectiohal view taken on the line 8—8 of Fig. 7.
The collapsible tool cabinet unit, according to this invention, Includes a flat vertical member 10, 55 which preferably, s' be a door of a closet, with various cabinet units and tools mounted on the upper portion of the vertical flat member 10. This tool cabinet is provided with a door 12 which is hingedly mounted at one side so that it may be opened, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5 2. Within the cabinet there are a plurality of clamps 13 which support a plurality of tools 14.
Beneath the tool cabinet 11 a drawer cabinet 15 Is mounted and attached to the flat vertical member 10. This drawer cabinet includes a plurality 10 of horizontal partitions 16 supporting a plurality of drawers 11. These drawers may be used to store and hold nails, screws and other small objects. A motor driven buffer and emery wheel 18 Is mounted upon the vertical member 10 be- 10 ncath the drawer cabinet 15. A table board 19 is hingedly mounted at one side upon the vertical member 10 and is adapted to be moved up to a horizontal position, as shown In Fig. 2, or down to a vertical position as shown in Fig. 1. A means 20 is provided for holding this table board in the vertical position. It comprises a pair of collapsible arms 20 at each of the sides of the table board connected between the extremities of the board and the vertical member 10. Each of 25 these arms comprises an upper arm section 2D“ and a lower arm section 20b pivotally connected in such a manner that in an aligned position of the arms they may be moved to a position so that they no longer can pivot. This is accom- 30 plished by a square projection 21 from the lower end of the arm 20“ engaging through an opening 22 In the upper end of the section 20b.
The opening 22 has a circular portion 22“ at the top connecting with a lower square shaped 35 portion 22b. The square projection 21 is provided with a large head 23 which is capable of extending over the opening 22 so that the parts are slidably and pivotally connected. The upper ends of the arm sections 20* are pivotally con- 40 nected with the outer end of the table board 19. The lower ends of the arm sections 20b are pivotally connected on brackets 23 mounted on the vertical member 10.
A means is also provided for automatically 45 raising the table board 19 to the operative horizontal position when the door 12 of the tool cabinet is opened. This means comprises an arm 21 projecting from the hinge edge of the door (2 and adapted to swing in an arcuate path as the 50 door 12 is opened and closed. A link 26 is hingedly connected with the outer end of the arm 25 and loosely connects with the upper arm 27“ of a bell crank 27 which has a lower arm 27b. This lower arm has a slot Into which a pin 28 extends. 55
The pin 28 Is mounted on a rod 28 which extends downwards and Is slidably supported by engaging through bearings in the back of the drawer cabinet 18 and in the base of the motor driven buffer II. At the lower end rod 21 has rack teeth 28* which mesh with a small pinion 80 fixed on a shaft II which is rotatable in a support bracket S2 mounted on the vertical member 10. This shaft II Is pinned to a lug 18 mounted on the rear edge of the table board 18.
When the door 12 Is opened the bell crank 27 will be pivoted so that the rod 28 Is moved downwards which will turn the pinion 10 to move the table board 18 upwards. When the table board reaches the horizontal position it automatically is locked Into this position by reason of the square projection 21 engaging Into the square opening 22*. immediately upon releasing of the door 12. In order to reclose the door 12, or lower the table board 18, It Is necessary that the table board be slightly raised so that the projection 21 engages In the opening 22* and then the arm sections 20* and 20» may be pivoted to prevent the projection 21 from re-engaging In the opening 22». The arms 21* and 21» may now move downwards and assume the dot and dash position Indicated in Fig. 3.
An electric plug II is mounted upon the vertical member 10 and is wired (not shown on the drawing) to a lamp II on a pivotally mounted arm 40. The plug II may be connected with a conventional house circuit to Illuminate the Irmp. Since the arm 40 may be pivoted, the lamp may be placed In advantageous positions when the 35 device is used.
While I have Illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my Invention, It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the 40 right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined In the appended claims.
