In the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 3 an ordinary garter ί is employed comprising a length of elastic 2 having one end secured to a loop 3. An 5 intermediate portion of the elastic 2 is passed around the cross bar of an adjusting slide 4 and then through the loop 3. The end portion of the elastic is again passed around the cross bar of the adjusting slide 4 and stitched to secure it 10 permanently to the slide 4. The garter thus made is housed in an ornamental fabric sheath which desirably consists of an inner piece 5 and an outer piece 6 attached together along their margins. The outer piece 6 is provided with an 15 end tab 7 having a buttonhole 8 worked in it. The adjusting slide 4 of the garter is desirably passed through the buttonhole 8 so as to prevent creeping of the garter relative to the sheath to· a position in which the slide 4 would be difficult to get 20 at. The opposite end of the outer sheath member 6 is stitched to form a triangular tab 9 of two-ply thickness. This tab normally conceals the slide 4 but may be turned back as shown in Fig. 2 when desired, to afford access to the slide. 25 When it is desired to adjust the garter the slide 4 is unbuttoned from the tab 7 and adjustment is effected in the usual way. The slide is then buttoned to the tab 7 again and the tab 9 is turned down to cover the slide. 30

In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 to 8 inclusive the garter la is desirably of the same construction as the garter I of Figs. 1 to· 3. Corresponding reference numerals with the subscript “a” added have accordingly been applied 35 to the corresponding parts. The garter la is provided with a sheath composed of inner and outer fabric pieces 5α and 6α. An end tab 7α of the outer sheath member carries a small elastic loop 10 which is adapted to be passed around the 40 slide 4α as shown in Figs. 6 and 8 to hold the slide against creeping to an inaccessible position. The end of the sheath member 6α opposite the tab 7α is provided with a cover flap 11. This flap is triangular in form. It can be folded back to 45 the position shown in Fig. 5 to expose the slide 4α. The upper edge of the flap, however, extends for a considerable distance beyond the slide and is secured continuously along its upper edge to the inner sheath member 5α by the same stitching 50 which unites the main body portions of the sheath members. As a result of this arrangement when the garter is drawn taut or stretched the tab 11 is automatically pulled downward and maintained in position to cover and conceal the 55

Claims.

This invention relates to garters, and more particularly to garters of the type in which the elastic is surrounded by a protective and ornamental fabric sheath.

Elastic garters are ordinarily provided with length adjusting means. Where a sheath is provided the adjusting means is apt to creep relative to the sheath so that by the time adjustment becomes necessary the adjusting means is 10 very difficult to get at.

It is an object of the present invention to· provide a sheathed garter having an opening at one side of the sheath and including means for locking the elastic adjusting device at the opening so 15 that the length adjusting device cannot creep around to an inaccessible position.

It is a further feature of the invention that the form of adjusting device employed consists of a flat slide which is adapted to be used like an ₂₀ ordinary button for buttoning it through a hole or eye carried by the sheath.

It is a further object of the invention to provide the sheath with a cover flap for normally covering and concealing the adjusting slide, so 25 arranged that it is drawn down over the slide by the tensioning of the garter when the garter is in use, but may be readily folded back to give access to the slide.

Other objects and advantages will hereinafter 30 appear.

The present application is a continuation in i part of my prior application, Serial No. 74,898, filed April 17, 1936 for Garments.

When it is desired to adjust the garter of Figs. 4 to 8 the tab ί 1 is folded upward, the elastic eye 5 or loop 10 is detached from the slide, and the slide is adjusted in the usual and well known manner.

While I have illustrated and described in detail certain preferred forms of my invention, it is to be understood that changes may be made 10 therein and the invention embodied in other structures. I do not, therefore, desire to· limit myself to: the specific constructions illustrated, but intend to cover my invention broadly in whatever form its principles may be utilized.
