IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED KNIFE AND MEASURING-RULE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,654, dated October 1, 1878; application filed

July 17, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, George Waldman and David Frank, both of the city of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Knives, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of our invention is to make an improved article used by mechanics and others who use levels, gages, and rules, and so combine them in one with the knife as to lessen their cost and make the use and carrying convenient.

The improvements consist in the graduated scale on the handle of the knife and gage or caliper-rule, Figure 4, B, which is to answer the purposes of a foot-rule aud caliper, and may be made of any desired length.

The level is a new design and new invention, as shown in Fig. 1, A.

The improvements are illustrated in detail. Fig. 1 is a side elevation, and shows the level attachment at A. It consists of a circular opening in the handle - scale, covered with glass, underneath which is secured a metal plate, to which is attached a movable needle, heavy at one end, on a small pivot. The plate is graduated in such a manner that when the knife is brought to a horizontal position on its back, or in a vertical position, the point of the needle coincides with the engraved lines on the plate. Fig. 2 is an end view of the caliper-rule as attached to the handle of the knife. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the line A B, and shows the combination of the several parts of the attachments. Fig. 4 is the opposite side elevation of the knife, and shows the attachment of the caliper-rule and scale. It is composed of a cast-steel slide, inserted as shown at B, Fig. 3, and stop, as shown at B, Fig. 2. The scale may be graduated as desired. Fig. 5 shows a top view of the caliper-rule and back of the knife.
