This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a non-breakable clothes pin.

The invention has for an object the construction of an article as mentioned which is char6 acterized by the fact that it is constructed from an integral strip of metal material having a central portion, an end portion continuing from one end of said central portion and extending along one side of the central portion and direct10 ed inwards, and also having another end portion continuing from the other end of said central portion and extending along the other side thereof and also directed inwards.

A further object of the invention is to ex18 tend the central and end portions to form handles, and to arrange bulged portions between the handle portions and the other portions by which it may be mounted on a clothes line.

Still further the invention contemplates an 2q arrangement whereby the several portions of the clothes pin may be latched together when desired to prevent its coming off a clothes line and to prevent clothes from disengaging from it.

Another object is the Construction of a device 25 as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, ref50 erence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The non-breakable clothes pin, according to this invention, comprises an integral strip of p_ff metal having a central portion 10, an end por tion II continuing from one end of the central portion and extending along one side of the central portion and directed inwards, and another end portion 12 connecting with the other end of said central portion and extending along the 5 other side of the central portion and also directed inwards.

The end portions are connected with the central portion by bent portions 13. The extremities of the end portions have small curled portions 10 14. The upper portion of the central portion 10 is opposed to the end portion 11 and permits the device to be engaged upon a clothes line, and which is indicated by the reference numeral 15. The lower portion of the central portion 10 is 15 opposed to the end portion 12 and forms a hook or clamp in which the strips or edges of clothes may be engaged.

An arrangement is also provided whereby the extremities of the end portions may be latched ₂o to the central portion when desired to prevent the accidental disengagement of the clothes pin from a clothes line, and also the accidental disengagement of clothing straps and other similar parts from the clothes pin. ₂₅

This means comprises a headed prong 16, preferably of T-shape, stamped from the material of each end portion and adapted to be forced into engagement with correspondingly shaped slots in the central portion. In Figs. 2 and 3 the headed ₃₀prongs 16 normally are in a position so that they cannot engage into the receiving openings 17. In order to cause the engagement it is necessary that the end portions be forced toward the central portion 10 and away from the bent portions _3g13 so that the heads of the prongs 16 pass through the large parts of the openings IT. When pressure is released the heads of the prongs will engage behind the material of the clothes pin to either side of the Vertical stem of the T-shape ₄₀IT, and thus the end portions are latched to the central portion.

In Fig. 5 a modified form of the invention has been shown in which the clothes pin is provided with handles by which it may be easily manipu- 45 lated. According to this form of the invention it comprises a central portion 10' which is connected by bends 13' to end portions IΓ and 12', respectively. Intermediate of the ends of the end portions II' and 12' there are bulged por- 50 tions 20 which are adapted to receive a clothes line or other line. The material of the clothes pin outside of these bulged portions constitutes handles. The extremities of the end portions II' and 12' are finished by suitable bent portions 14'. 55

Hie extremities of the end portions are also provided with headed prongs engageable with receiving openings in the central portion as previously described.

In Fig. 6 another modified form of the invention is disclosed in which the clothes pin comprises an integral strip having a side portion 21 . connected by a bent portion 22 with another side portion 23. The free ends of the side portions

21 and 23 are finished by curled portions 24. One of the side portions is formed with a headed prong engageable in a receiving opening 11· in the side portion similar to the arrangement as previously described. It is thus possible to inter15 engage the headed prong within the opening by suitable relative pressure between the end portions so as to lock the end portions together.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to 20 be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
