UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
2,031,484 HAIRPIN CLASP Frank Interrante, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application May 1, 1935, Serial No. 19,136 2 Claims. (Cl. 132—50)
This invention relates to new and useful imaprovements in a hair pin clasp.
The invention has for an object the construction of a clasp as mentioned which is character5 ized by a single strand of wire having a bottom section consisting of a pair of parallel side portions connected with a top section consisting of a U-shaped portion, and the connecting sections being so formed and constructed as to form a finger 10 grip for the clasp.
The dominant feature of the invention resides in the construction of the connection sections mentioned in the previous paragraph, and relates, to a concave formation into which the tips 15 of the fingers may readily engage for conveniently holding and manipulating the clasp.
Still further the invention contemplates a formation wherein each connection section has a top element connected with a bend to a bottom ele20 ment, and said elements being curved for receiving the tips of one’s fingers.
Another object of the invention is the teaching of a method for conveniently manufacturing the clasps described.
Still further the invention proposes the construction of a clasp as described which is simple and durable and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, 30 and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
in the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:—
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a device constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view of Fig. 1.
40 Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the line 3—3.
Fig. 4 is a partially developed wiew of the clasp.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a clasp constructed according to another embodiment of this invention. 45 Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the clasp illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 partially developed.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of a partially developed 50 clasp according to another embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the clasp partially shown in Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 is a plan view of another partially de55 veloped clasp.
Fig. 11 is a perspective view of a finished clasp embodying the formation shown in Fig. 10.
The hair clasp illustrated in Figs. 1-3 inclusive comprises a single strand of wire having a bottom section 10 consisting of a pair of parallel 5 side portions IOa arid IOb. A top section I ( is arranged above the bottom section and consists of a U-shaped portion I ia with the arms thereof above said side portions 10» and IOb. A connection section 12 connects the free end of one of the ιθ arms of the U-shaped portion i ia with the adjacent free end of the side portion i0a. Another connecting section 13 connects the free end of the other arm of the U-shaped portion I la with the adjacent free end of the said side portion IOb. 15
The connecting section 12 comprises a curved top element 12» connected by a bend I2b with a curved bottom element 12°. The connection section 13 comprises a curved top element I3a connected with a bend I3b with a curved bottom ele- 20 ment I3C.
The curved elements 12», I2C, 13», and 13c are adapted to receive the convexed formation of the forefinger and thumb of the hand of a person so that the clasp may be conveniently gripped. The 25 bends I2b and I3b comprise portions of the clasp which are gripped by the finger tips. Thus, the clasp may be readily manipulated and properly positioned in the hair and removed when desired. 30
The side portions 10» and I0b are of greater length than the length of the U-shaped portion 11» so as to materially project to the front, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The bend I lb of the U-shaped portion 11» is slightly di- 35 rected upwards in side elevation (see Fig. 2) so that the hair may be readily forced in between the tor section ί I and the bottom section 10 when the clasp is positioned upon the hair.
A further feature of the construction resides 40 in the fact that the bends I2b and 13b are in intimate contact with each other so as to prevent the hair from engaging in the compass between the arms of the U-shaped portion.
In Fig. 4 a partially developed view of the clasp shown in Figs. 1-3 has been disclosed. This figure teaches the manufacture of the clasp. It is formed from a single strand of wire which has the side portions 10» and IOb, the U-shaped por- 50 tion II», and the connecting sections 12 and 13 formed in a common plane. The single strand of wire, after it is formed into the shape shown in Fig. 4, is then bent at the centers of the connecting sections 12 and 13 so as to place the top 55
8,081,484 section above the bottom section. This forms the bends 12” and ISb.
In Figs. S and 6 another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed which is substantially 6 identical to the form previously described, the identical parts being indicated by the same reference numerals, but distinguishing merely in the construction of the side portions 10* and llb.
In this form of the invention the side portions 10 are formed with a plurality of scallops, or wavy construction, indicated by reference numerals 10“ and IObb respectively. These scallops are arranged In a common plane, as clearly indicated by Fig. 6. They are located beneath the arms 15 of the U-shaped portion II», and serve to provide additional gripping surfaces for gripping the hair In conjunction with the arms of the Ushaped portion.
In Fig. 7 the blank for constructing the clasp 2o Illustrated In Figs. 5 and 6 is shown. This blank is very similar in formation to the one illustrated In Fig. 4, distinguishing merely In the construction of the scalloped portions 10“ and I O'* upon the side portions 10» and 10b.
In Figs. 8 and 9 another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed. In this species the clasp is formed from a stamping from sheet metal, contrasted with the prior formations from wire strands. In Fig. 8 an elevatlonal view Is 30 shown of the stamping. This stamping Is provided with the side portions 20* and 20b connecting respectively with the connection sections 22 and 23, which in turn connect with the U-shaped portion 21». The connection sections 23 are in35 tegral with each other. This blank may be bent on the line AB to form the finished clasp as Illustrated in Fig. 9. This finished clasp comprises a bottom section 20 and a top section 21. The bottom section 20 consists of the side portions 20* and 20b. The top section 21 consists of a Ushaped portion 21». The normally free ends of the U-shaped portion are connected with a connection section 25 connecting with the side portions 20» and 20b.
In Figs. 10 and 11 another embodiment of the Invention has been disclosed which is very similar to the prior form shown in Figs. 8 and 9 distin guishing therefrom merely in the emission of the connecting sections 22 and 23. In this form of the invention there is a transverse portion 20 serving as the connection section. The blank must be bent on the line CD in order to place it « in the form illustrated in Fig. 1.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is re- iq served to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the Invention as defined in the appended claims.
