Claims.

The invention relates to pads which may be applied loosely to any support or attached to a support, such as a spring mattress.

The objects of the invention are to simplify 5 the construction of such pads; to secure a fullness which will retain its shape and will hold the outer covering substantially taut; and which will prevent the stretching of the pad.

The improved pad is composed of a plurality of 10 units which may be used separately or in assembled relation.

The invention is fully hereinafter described, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which

Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of the completed pad;

Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of one of the units of the pad in course of fabrication; and

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification.

Th_e improved pad is made up of a plurality of units, one of which is shown in course of construction in Fig. 4, and consists of a bat 10 of fibrous material, such as cotton, this bat being of the full area of the pad. Upon one face of ³⁰ this bat are placed a plurality of narrow bats 11, of similar material, these bats lying close together. To both faces of this assembly are applied sheets of fabric 12, 13, which are united by seams located between adjacent bats ί I, the stitching extending ³⁵ through the bat i 0.

In the form of the pad shown in Figs. 2 and 3, two of the units above described are assembled together, the faces carrying the bats 11 being disposed outwardly, and al bat 14 of fibrous material ⁴⁰ being preferably interposed between the two units. A boxing 15 covers the sides of the pad (Cl.5—355) and is stitched to the facing covers 12, 12, as shown at 16, 16, these seams being preferably inclosed in a binding, as 17. In this assembly the outer covers ! 2 and 15 of the pad will be of stout fabric, while the inner facing 13 of each unit may 5 be of lighter material.

A pad thus formed is intended for use without being attached to any support. Its cross seaming intermediate of the narrow bats gives it a pleasing appearance and renders it comfortable to the io user and insures a permanent fullness. The cross seams also prevent a stretching of the pad either lengthwise or crosswise.

If desired a single unit of the pad as described may be separately used, and for such use the fac- 15 ing 13 should be of stouter material and secured to the boxing, as indicated in Fig. 5.
