Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container equipped with a sliding fastener means for closing the mouth and illustrating the same in closed condition.

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sliding 5 fastener means in retracted position and the mouth of the container in opened condition.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the line 3—3 in Fig. 2, with a portion of the upper 10 edges of the container broken away.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 4—4 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, A designates a container or an equivalent 15 structure having a linear mouth 10 and provided with oppositely disposed beaded edges i I defining the mouth and formed on the opposite walls (2 of the container body.

A sliding fastener for closing and retaining 20 the mouth in closed condition is provided which includes relatively slidable elements 15, 16, IT, and 18. In the present disclosure, the elements 15, 16, IT, and 18 consist of a plurality of split tubular telescopically associated sections which, 25 when extended, as shown in Fig. 1, provide edges 19 continuously engaging throughout the entire length of the mouth, the walls 12 of the container body adjacent their juncture with the beaded edges 11, the beaded edges and the mouth f 0 being 30 encompassed and completely enclosed by the tubular sections to prevent spillage of the contents.

In the form of the invention illustrated, the section 18 is fixed to the bag body A at one end 0f 35 the mouth while the remaining sections are relatively slidable with respect to the fixed section 18 and with reference to each other from the retracted position shown in Fig. 2 where they nest one over the other to permit of the opening of 40 the mouth, to an extended position as shown in Fig. 1 where they close and retain the mouth in closed condition. While any means may be employed for limiting the relative sliding movement of the elements or sections, the limiting 45 means shown consists of radially projecting stop lugs 20 formed adjacent the outer ends of the sections 16, IT, and 18 which engage in longitudinal slots 21 formed in the sections 15, 16 and IT.

In order to facilitate the manipulation of the 50 fastening means, the outer free end of the outermost section or element 15 is provided with an enlarged rim or bead 22 secured thereover, while the outer free end of the fixed section 18 4s formed with a knob or bead 23. The section 18 '

Claims.

This invention relates to slide fasteners for the mouths of containers and has particular reference to a telescopically extensible and contractible slide fastener to respectively close and open 5 the mouths of containers such as tobacco pouches, bathing bags, powder puff containers or the like.

The invention broadly comprehends a slide fastener of the indicated character composed of 10 a plurality of hollow telescopically associated sections having longitudinally extending aligned slots In which are received the lips of the container mouth,‘so that the sections, when extended, close, cover arid retain the lips in closed 15 relation and when the sections are retracted uncover and release the lips to permit the opening of the container mouth.

The invention more specifically contemplates a slide fastener composed of a plurality of slotted 20 hollow telescopically associated sections, one of which is secured to the container in alignment with the mouth thereof and another of which is slidably movable over the mouth of the container with the lips engaged, closed and retained in 25 closed relation by the slotted portion thereof.

The invention further provides in a slide fastener of the indicated character, a plurality of slotted tubular telescopically associated sections of progressively increasing cross sectional size 30 and provided with means for limiting the relative movement and preventing disengagement of the sections.

The invention further resides in the combination with a container having a linear mouth pro35 vided with beaded edges and sliding means for. closing the mouth which consists of relatively Slidable elements adapted to clampingly engage continuously throughout the entire length of the mouth, the walls of the container body adjacent ⁴® their juncture with the beaded edges of the mouth.

Other objects of the invention reside in the provision of a device of the indicated character which is extremely simple in its construction and ⁴³ mode of operation, which is inexpensive to produce and which is highly efficient for its intended purpose.

With the above enumerated and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following 5® specification and accompanying drawing in which there is disclosed, by way of example, a preferred embodiment of the invention, while the claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
