JAR CLOSURE

The invention relates to new and useful improvements in jar closures, and more particularly jar closures of the type where a band presses the closure cap against the sealing gasket for sealing 6 the jar.

An object of the invention is to provide a sealing band which is constructed so that the pressure against the closure cap is localized and centered over the ideal sealing point between the 10 sealing band and the lip of the jar.

In the drawing:

Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation of a jar with the closure cap attached thereto and the jar sealed by the improved U clamping band.

Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view showing the closure cap and band assembled on the jar before the band is screwed down so as to clamp the closure to the jar.

Figure 3 is a similar view showing the band screwed down and the closure cap in tight sealed contact with the jar head.

The invention has to do with a jar closure which includes a jar closure cap provided with a channel in which is placed a sealing gasket. The jar closure with the sealing gasket is inverted and placed on the jar so that the sealing gasket contacts with the lip of the jar from the inside to the outside thereof, slightly overlying both *' the inside and outside edges of the jar lip. The jar closure is forced into sealing contact with the jar by a clamping band which may be secured to the jar in any suitable way but preferably by screw threads. The clamping band has an annular inwardly extending portion which overlies the jar closure and the inner edge of the annular portion Is turned underneath and extends for a distance outwardly flat against the underface of the band. This underturned portion provides a i strengthening of the edge of the annular portion of the band and it also provides a contracting rib which engages the jar closure directly over the Inside edge of the sealing lip of the jar which is the ideal sealing point. In this way the pres45 sure on the closure is localized so as to bring about a very tight seal between the sealing gasket, the jar closure, and the lip of the jar.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the jar is indicated at I. Hie jar as shown is prb60 vided with a screw thread 2 Which projects from the outer face of the neck of the jar. The jar neck terminates at its lipper end in the usual form of rib 3. Hie jar is closed by a cap or jar closure * which is shaped so as to provide a chan66 nel 5 with a flange I at the outer edge thereof which is adapted to extend down along the outer face of the jar. The jar closure has a depressed central portion providing the inner inclined wall 7, and this inner wall 7 together with the flange 6 forms a channel. Located in this channel is 5 an elastic gasket 6. The gasket may be flowed into the channel when the closure is placed with the channel facing upward and the elastic sealing material allowed to dry or set so as to form on the closure an elastic closure gasket. This 10 gasket may be otherwise formed and otherwise attached to the closure. The· closure with the gasket applied thereto is inverted and placed on the jar. The gasket extends all the way across the lip of the jar and overhangs the inside edge 15 of the lip and also the outside edge of the lip.

The closure is forced into sealing contact with the jar by a clamping band 9. This clamping band extends down alongside of the neck of the jar and is provided with a thread which coop- 20 erates with the threads 2 on the jar neck. Said band has an inwardly projecting annular portion 19 which is provided with an annular bead (I for strengthening the same. The inner edge of the portion 19 is folded back underneath as in- 25 dicated at 12. This underturned portion is placed flat against the underface of the annular inwardly projecting portion of the band. The underturned portion 12 thus provides a relatively narrow rib or band which contacts with the outer face of 30 the jar closure 4. This initially is the sole contact between the screw band and the jar closure. The contacting surface of the screw band is therefore localized and centered directly over the inside of the lip on the jar. This is the ideal seal- 35 ing point. The pressure of the rib against the jar closure will force the sealing material downwardly and inwardly along the inside lip of the jar 9 making a very tight sealing line. This sealing line is indicated at a in Figure 3 of the 40 drawing.

From the above it will be apparent that a closure has been provided for a jar wherein a sealing band through the localized pressure at the ideal sealing point brings about a very tight 45 seal between the closure cap, sealing gasket and the lip of the jar. It is obvious that the clamping band may be otherwise connected to the jar so that it will be drawn into tight clamping contact with the jar closure. The essential feature 50 of applicant’s invention is not in the screw connection between the band and the jar, but in the formed rib on the underface of the inwardly projecting portion of the band which localizes the gripping pressure on the jar closure. 2,008,583 be obvious that this localized pressure at the inner edge of the clamping band may be otherwise obtained without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
