Method and system for Synchronized Policy Control In A Web Services Environment

Abstract

Policy controls for Web service resource objects in a hierarchical resource space are loosely coupled so that policy changes are applied and enforced across the objects. This technique ensures that different policies are not applied unintentionally to the same resource (for example, one at the Web services entry level, and the other at the resource level). By synchronizing the object in the manner described, neither the entity that deploys the application nor the security administrator need to be aware of the differences between the various types of requests that occur within a Web services environment. In a representative embodiment, resource objects are linked within a hierarchical resource space to provide synchronized policy control, where the policy is an audit policy, a quality-of-service (QoS) policy, a service level agreement (SLA) policy, a governance policy, a compliance policy, a patch management/vulnerability management policy, a user management policy, or a rights management policy.

  1. 1
Broadest claimClaim Score 77, broad(NHIP)A method for providing synchronized policy control in a Web services environment, comprising:monitoring a first object representation in a hierarchical resource space;and responsive to a change in a policy rule for the first object representation, automatically applying the change to a policy rule for a corresponding second object in the hierarchical resource space.
  2. 9
A computer-implemented method for providing policy control in a web services environment having associated therewith a first portion of a resource space and a second portion of the resource space, comprising:mapping an object in the first portion of the resource space to an object in the second portion of the resource space;and in response to a change to a given policy associated with the first object, automatically applying the change to a given policy associated with the second object.
  3. 13
A computer-implemented method for providing synchronized control in a Web services environment, comprising:associating an object in a first object space with an object in a second object space, wherein the first object space is associated with a Web service representation and the second object space is associated with a resource required to implement the Web service;monitoring the first object space for changes to object attributes;upon detecting a change to an object attribute, determining whether the change is associated with the object in the first object space;if the change is associated with the object in the first object space, propagating the change to the object in the second object space so that the first and second object spaces remain synchronized;wherein the changes to object attributes are associated with one of: an audit policy, a quality-of-service policy, a service level agreement (SLA) policy, a governance policy, a compliance policy, a patch management/vulnerability management policy, a user management policy, and a rights management policy.
  4. 16
A computer-implemented method for providing synchronized control in a Web services environment having a hierarchical resource space, comprising:associating given objects in the hierarchical resource space;and with respect to at least one given policy, automatically maintaining the given objects synchronized;wherein the given policy is one of: an audit policy, a quality-of-service policy, a service level agreement (SLA) policy, a governance policy, a compliance policy, a patch management/vulnerability management policy, a user management policy, and a rights management policy.
  5. 17
A computer program product comprising a computer useable medium having a computer readable program, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to perform the following method steps:monitoring a resource space;and responsive to a change in an policy control rule for a first object in the resource space, automatically applying the change to a policy control rule for a corresponding second object in the resource space;wherein the policy rule is associated with one of: an audit policy, a quality-of-service policy, a service level agreement (SLA) policy, a governance policy, a compliance policy, a patch management/vulnerability management policy, a user management policy, and a rights management policy.
